J Jumpsuit Course Information & Syllabus 1
ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES: CHICAGO, ILL. / LOS ANGELES, CALIF. / WWW.JUMPSU.IT JUMPSUIT J COURSE INFORMATION & SYLLABUS DOCUMENT: RDS . JUMPSUIT How to Make a Personal Uniform for the End of Capitalism COURSE DESCRIPTION Fashion is inherently political. We see this in the way our clothing produces social signals to ways it is bought, sold, worn, and produced. In this six-week class the Rational Dress Society, in collaboration with the Arts Research Collective (ARC), will position fashion in the context of theory and practice. Students will learn to sew a JUMPSUIT of their very own alongside lessons and discussions on topics including, Marxism, feminism, cyborgs, revolutionary dress, the environment, labor and the end of western capitalism. June 17th - July 26th Wednesday/Sunday 8:00 - 9:30 est WHAT IS THIS COURSE ABOUT? This course will be structured in two parts. In the first half, we will learn to sew JUMPSUITS using a free pattern designed by the RDS. In the second half, we will learn to design our own personal uniform, to replace all clothes in perpetuity. Alongside sewing, patternmaking and design demonstrations, RDS cofounders Abigail Glaum-Lathbury and Maura Brewer will lead a series of discussions and workshops to reimagine what a post-consumer society might look like. Together, we will turn theory into practice and form new bonds of solidarity in times of self-isolation. WHAT WILL STUDENTS LEARN? This class is designed for any individual who would like to make a JUMPSUIT regardless of prior sewing experience. Together with online workshops, supplemental instructional videos and resources, students will create a RDS monogarment from start to finish while discussing the historical and theoretical framework of our current political landscape. -
Craft Sportswear and the Finnish National Biathlon Team Launches ‘Hannunvaakuna’ Racing Suit
Dec 03, 2015 08:00 CET Craft Sportswear and the Finnish national biathlon team launches ‘hannunvaakuna’ racing suit The collaboration between Swedish sportswear brand Craft and the Finnish national biathlon team has resulted in highly functional race garments with a truly strong presence. The new competition wear will be worn by Kaisa Mäkäräinen and her colleagues on the Finnish team during the 2015/2016 season. "We looked for something that would really set the suit apart from the competition," says Craft's designer Lena Karlsson. "Soon we came up with the 'hannunvaakuna', the looped square that is a common symbol in Finland and that conveys strength and good luck. Placing the patterns in lines that follow the moving body, we have created a suit that truly radiates speed and power." The new Finland Biathlon competition garments are based on Craft's revolutionary Podium Suit, which has been equipped with biathlon-specific details such as smooth rubber patches in certain areas to ensure steady and precise shooting. Made of very thin and lightweight Italian polyester, the suit offers superior moisture transport and body-temperature management. In addition, compression fabrics in the legs keep the muscles focused while ultrasonic taped seams create a smooth surface for optimal aerodynamics. The suit is packed with innovative features including Moving Wing Technology ™, which is a wing-like construction piece at the upper back that ensures total freedom of movement and allows the skiers to transmit all their power into each pole stroke. Furthermore, three-dimensional ergonomic design provides perfect fit and optimal comfort. Craft is a Swedish brand specializing in clothing for endurance sports where performance and comfort are crucial for a good result. -

Design of Seamless Knitted Radiation Shielding Garments with 3D Body Scanning Technology
Available online at www.sciencedirect.com ScienceDirect Procedia Technology 20 ( 2015 ) 123 – 132 The International Design Technology Conference, DesTech2015, 29th of June – 1st of July 2015, Geelong, Australia Design of Seamless Knitted Radiation Shielding Garments with 3D Body Scanning Technology Huda Ahmed Maghrabia,c, Arun Vijayana, Lijing Wanga*, Pradip Debb aSchool of Fashion & Textiles, RMIT University, Brunswick, Victoria 3056, Australia bSchool of Medical Sciences, RMIT University, Bundoora, Victoria 3083, Australia cDepartment of Textiles and Clothing, Umm Al-Qura University, Mecca 24382, Saudi Arabia Abstract Protective aprons for medical use shield against the effects of radiation. The aprons are universally tailored to fit both male and female bodies without due consideration to the differences that abound between masculine and feminine bodies. To date very little emphasis has been shown on the development of aprons to suit the needs of the female anatomy specifically the breast region as well as consideration of the body shape of pregnant women. This research reviews the needs to develop an X-ray protective garment that is specifically tailored for the female body. Protective aprons designed to fit the female physique incorporating curvature around specific parts of the body namely hip and breast regions as well as the suitability of the apron for use by pregnant women have been explored. Emphasis has been shown on the fit of the garment to impart improved wearer mobility. 3D body scanning technology was used to determine the fit of the developed designs and understand the significance of air gaps between the body and the garment. © 2015 The Authors. Adventures of a Nepali Frog Kanak Mani Dixit Illustrations by Subhas Rai
ADVENTURES OF A NEPALI FROG KANAK MANI DIXIT ILLUSTRATIONS BY SUBHAS RAI An excitable young frog from Kathmandu Valley, “just out of his tadpole teens”, decides to travel through his country. Bhaktaprasad Bhyaguto goes where no frog has gone before. He rides a tin can downriver, treks past majestic peaks, rides porter-back, mule-back and yak-back to remote villages, arid hops across a good part of Nepal before returning to Kathmandu in an airline pilot’s shirt pocket. This description of Bhaktaprasad’s adventures through Nepal’s mountains, hills and plains presents authentic landscapes and unique characters. It brings Nepal to life for the young readers, and helps build empathy for the creatures, including humans, that inhabit the Nepali countryside. Bhaktaprasad: a name common in Nepal Bhyaguto: ‘frog’ in the Nepali language Rato Bangala Kitab is the publishing wing of Rato Bangala School in Kathmandu Valley. This book is part of our effort to provide the children of Nepal with readings specific to their country and society. We also hope it will help inform a larger audience of young readers about life and times in this corner of South Asia. KATHMANDU CALLING Bhaktaprasad Bhyaguto was a young Kathmandu frog, barely out of his tadpole teens. He lived with his grandfather Buddhiprasad, mother Sanomaiya, sisters and brothers in a rice terrace by the village of Ichangu, on a hillside behind the great stupa of Swayambhu. Like all froggies his age, Bhaktaprasad was a curious amphibian, but only more so. He was the quickest to learn to hop among his brood, and had lately taken to venturing out of the muddy paddies and unto the path used by humans that went down the hill. -
