RSL display of Boer War photographs 7 21 photographs. 1900-2004. Copies of photographs relating to the Boer War including South Australian and contingents, SA army nurses, South Australian Mounted Rifles, and South Australian Imperial Bushmen, and the 100th anniversary of the Boer War Memorial dedication re-enactment and service held in 2004. All photographs have been laminated and were used for a Boer War display by the RSL.

Items relate to the war service of Lance-Corporal Leslie James Henry Harris, Service No. 77, 43rd Battalion, and in memory of his younger brother Lance-Corporal Horace Harris, Service No. 5352, 27th Battalion, who was killed in action in France on 20 September 1917. Sons of William Harris and May Ann (nee Walker).

Memorial Scroll 14 Scroll on mount. ca.1922 memorial scroll for Private John Robert Wilson, No. 1928, 12th Battalion. The scroll bears the Royal Coat of Arms and a message paying tribute to those soldiers who gave up their lives in the War.

Included are badges created for occasions such as Australia Day, Violet Day, Army Nurses Day, and French Day, and for charity groups including the Red Cross, the Cheer-Up Society, the R.S.A. Building Fund (Returned Soldiers' Association), the Wattle Day League, Soldiers' Home, Children's Patriotic League, Nursing Society, and the Y.M.C.A., as well as official peace badges marking the end of the war and various miscellaneous badges including a Christian Endeavour convention, fundraising carnivals and memorial gardens. Hand-carved Red Cross Christmas box 21 Wooden box, 11.5 x 21.5 x 8.3 cm. 1917. Hand-carved wooden box from the Australian Red Cross, decorated with the Australian and British flags, and AIF rising sun emblem, sent by the Australian Red Cross as a Christmas greeting presented to No. 3796A George W. Banks, Medical Corps, on the Western Front in 1917. Donated to the RSL by George Banks’ nephew.

War medals of Gordon John Smith 22 9 war medals, ca.1945-1975. WW2 service medals belonging to SX4427 Private Gordon John Smith, with ribbons, attached to a bar: 1939-45 Star, , , Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-1945, and the Australia Service Medal 1939-1945. The Australian Service Medal 1945-1975, in case, with silver Clasp ‘SW Pacific’, and a miniature version of the medal, ribbon and clasp. Also comprising a small golden coloured medallion presented to Pte. G.J. Smith by the residents of Hawker and district for services rendered during the Second World War.

Poppy and Anzac Day Appeals 24 Badges, flyers, ca. 1965-2013. RSL Poppy Day (Remembrance Day) Appeal memorabilia including flyers, a collection tin and cardboard tray, and various poppy day badges made of metal and plastic, as well as different styles of synthetic poppy flower badges. Also comprising RSL Anzac Day Appeal memorabilia including flyers and donation cards, cardboard tray, badges, and a yellow wrist band. See special list for Series 24 for details.

RSL Memorabilia 25 7 ties, cufflinks. ca. 1990. RSL cufflinks featuring an RSL shield badge in the centre with the words ‘Returned Services League, Service Member’ around the edge, and three servicemen walking side-by-side in the centre, surmounted by a crown, with gold outlines and text, on a cream background, with gold border and base, in plastic container with price ($10.50) on back. Also comprising seven RSL service member ties featuring the RSL service member badge embroidered on the front, in four different colours: red, maroon, navy and gold/mustard.

Girl in a Million Quest crown 26 1 crown. ca.1959. Winner’s crown from the ‘Girl in a Million Quest’ pageant run by the RSL from 1959 until 2009. The crown is 14 cm in diameter and 10.5 cm high, featuring rhinestones arranged in a pattern of tear-drop like shapes with flower shapes in the centre, and a white fur band around the base. One of Australia’s longest-running pageants, the Girl in a Million Quest raised millions of dollars for veterans over its 50 year history, as contestants organised charity fundraisers and helped bridge the gap between veterans and youth. Entrants were judged on their personality, communication skills, dedication to the quest, charm, and ability to interact with all types of people. The pageant was last run in 2009.

Cheer-Up Society 27 3 badges, 2 veils, 1 banner, documents. ca.1915-1948. Items relating to the Cheer-Up Society Adelaide comprising: Banner presented to the Cheer-Up Society by the Saturday afternoon helpers 1944, featuring the names of members, volunteers and servicemen; two light blue triangular veils made of a thin tulle-type material, worn by Cheer-Up Society volunteers as part of their uniform; two Cheer-Up Society Voluntary Service badges; one circular medallion ‘Britain Calls Australia 1914’ from WW1; Cheer-Up Society published documents, including newsletter, information booklet, rules, historical souvenir and letter heads. The Recruiting Train signed letter 28 1 sheet, mounted. 1916. Typed letter from The Recruiting Train, dated Thursday 30 March 1916, addressed to Mr. Victor H. Ryan, thanking him for his organisation of the recruitment campaign, signed by 12 members of the Recruiting Party. Two recruiting tours were held in South Australia, in March and April of 1916, travelling around the state by train, and featured army bands, flags and speeches by the Premier, attracting large crowds but resulting in few recruits.

Corporal Erle Cherrington Evans Honourable Discharge King’s Certificate 29 1 certificate. 1916. Honourable Discharge certificate (King’s Certificate) awarded to Corporal Erle Cherrington Evans, 10th Battalion AIF, No. 905, of Hyde Park, SA, enlisted 31 August 1914, aged 26, embarked from Adelaide on ‘Ascanius’, 20 October 1914, served with the 10th Battalion, and returned to Australia in July 1915, medically unfit after being wounded in the Dardanelles. The illustration in the centre shows Britannia on the left, seated on a throne, holding a sheathed sword in her left hand and the flag of Great Britain in her right hand, looking down on two soldiers in uniform standing on the right, holding their rifles, one wearing a . In the background can be seen a lion statue, and the ocean. The red border consists of the Royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom and columns decorated with various foliate and architectural motifs. Text reads: ‘Corpl. Erle Cherrington Evans, 10th Battalion A.I.F., Served with honour and was disabled in the Great War. Honourably discharged on 12th April 1916. [Signed] George R.J.’. Home Appeal collection hat 30 1 model slouch hat. ca.1963 Model AIF slouch hat used as a collection tin for the RSL Home Appeal. The hat is khaki coloured, with a yellow painted band and on the right side is a battalion colour patch, a rectangle halved diagonally, with the left side red and right side blue. The left side of the hat is turned up with a gold AIF rising sun badge holding it in place. At the front of the brim is a sticker, almost worn off, with the words ‘Home Appeal’. On the top of the hat is a coin slot for donations, and the inside of the hat is fitted with a white plastic tray, which can be removed, to hold the coins. 33.5 x 20 x 8.5 cm. ca.1963.

RSL Sports trophies and awards 31 2 trophies, 5 plaques, 1 medallion. 1948-1993. Trophies and winner’s plaques for RSL teams and members in sporting groups, including Electric Light Cricket and lawn bowls. See special list for Series 31 for details.

Army Nursing Corps copper relief plaque 32 1 copper plaque. ca.1952. Rectangular copper relief plaque of the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps Badge, featuring a lamp as the central feature of the badge, symbolising learning, in an oval with ‘Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps’ around the border, surmounted by a crown, and the motto ‘Pro Humanitate’ (for humanity) in a scroll at the bottom. Under the scroll is a name, possibly Phillis or Phillips. 20 x 13.5 cm. ca.1952.

Letters from Staff Sergeant Eric S. Goodrich 40 1943-1945. 9 cm. Series of letters written by Staff Sergeant Eric Stanley Goodrich, SX31858 (S48609) between 26 August 1943 and 30 November 1945, to his partner Mary and children Peter and John, who lived at 46 Kintore Ave, Prospect. Staff Sergeant Goodrich was stationed in , NSW, with 10 Australian Army Troops RAE, and at , New Guinea.

Raymond Nicholls British Mercantile Marine Identification Certificate 42 1945. 0.5 cm. Argentine Immigration Regulations Identification Certificate, British Mercantile Marine, for Raymond Nicholls, aged 18, son of Albert, working as a Galley Boy on the T.S.S. ‘Princesa’ from Liverpool to Argentina for 1 year of sea service. Includes finger prints. Dated 25 July 1945. The ‘Princesa’ was a Steel Screw Steamer, built in 1918 by Alexander Stephen & Sons Ltd., owned by Furness-Houlder Argentine Lines Ltd. Liverpool, and operated from 1918 to 1949.

Frank Kennedy photographs from Gallipoli 45 5 black and white copies of photographs. ca.1914-1915. Five black and white copies of photographs of Anzac troops at Gallipoli, showing troops, supplies and tents on the beach and in the hills, and ships in the cove. Frank Kennedy suffered a head wound at Gallipoli and was taken to hospital in England for 12 months before being transferred back to Australia.

Gift from The Australian Comforts Fund’, belonging to Private Colin Leslie Taylor, SX8455, Australian Field Ambulance/9 Div AIF, born 25 January 1920, from Virginia, South Australia, 1944. 2. ‘First aid for fighting men’ 1943, information pamphlet illustrations and envelope addressed to M.A. Walloscheck, SX9456. 3. Brown pocket belonging to No. 1777 Private Francis Alexander Muirhead, 32nd Battalion, 8th Brigade, containing two WW1 identity discs (dog tags) on a piece of thick string, one brown and one silver, with ‘1777 F.A. Muirhead 32nd BN AIF, CE’ engraved on the front. 4. Regular Army Certificate of Service book for No. 7554955 Donald Robert Fulton, enlisted at London on 5 December 1934 and served with of the Line (1934-39), Royal Armoured Corps (1939-43), and Royal Army Service Corps (1943-46). 5. ‘Oorlogszakboekje’ van Faber J.Y., 9a Regiment Infanterie, 1936-I-14, Netherlands, manual belonging to Jacobus (Jack) Ynte Faber (d.1971 aged 54), written in Dutch. 6. Holy Bible belonging to Edward Chenery, awarded as a prize from the B/O Norton Sunday School July 1900.

Donald Philip Tullie Wollaston photographs and postcards 47 108 photographs, 9 postcards. 1916-1954. Nine postcards sent by Sgt Donald Philip Tullie Wollaston, No. 2143, serving with the 3rd, 5th and 15th Light Horse Regiment, from Egypt in March to April 1916, to Jean Elise Robertson, whom he married after the War. 107 black and white photographs (negatives) taken by Sgt Wollaston featuring scenes of Australian soldiers in Egypt, camels, local people, the pyramids at Giza and the Sphinx, and cities in Egypt including Cairo and Alexandria. In the negative case were three slips of paper: Special Duty pass, postage receipt and an optician test for Sgt Wollaston. Also comprising some personal family photographs which appear to be WW2 era to the 1950s, in a negative packet with the name ‘Walloscheck’ on the cover – possibly photographs of Lt/Col. John Vincent Corigliano war service records 49 130 sheets. 1904-2006. 3 cm. Original service record documents including certificates, commissions, service records, and correspondence, along with newspaper cuttings, and photocopies of service details from the Australian War Memorial and two photocopies of black and white photographs of J.V. Corigliano in uniform. Born in Beachport, SA on 25 February 1880, he served on the ‘HMCS Protector’ from 1900-1901 during the Boxer Uprising, aboard the HMAS Australia and HMAS Melbourne during WW1, No. 7424 RAN in of the naval oil depot at Chowder Bay, Sydney during WW2, and attained the rank of Engineer Lieutenant-Commander, died 1956. Also comprising newspaper cuttings re the death in 1968 of Charles ‘Charlie’ David Corigliano (b.1891) No. 1184 RAN, younger brother of J.V. Corigliano, and photocopies of service records for No. 2011 Private Maurice Corigliano (b.1883), younger brother of J.V. Corigliano, who served with the 32nd Battalion and was killed in action in France, July 1916.

Photographs taken by NX 32244 Corporal Frank Purvis, 2/30 Battalion, B Company – 10 Platoon: Malaya (Malaysia) and Singapore before and during WWII; troops in formation; Batavia (Jakarta) in 1938; ships including the Queen Mary troop ship and ‘Dorsetshire’; Japanese navy ships in China; photographs of NX145608 (N246299) Sapper Peter Albert Leunig in New Guinea; and one photograph of the ‘Budd’ diesel engine at Port Augusta in March 1951. Letters from WWI sent to the Pilben family 51 1916-1917. 1 cm. Letters and postcards written by: No. 2034 Pte Frederick (Fred) Twort to his Auntie and Uncle, Eva Augusta and William John Pilben during active service in Egypt 1916 (returned to Australia and discharged June 1916 due to deafness); one letter written by No. 4826 Pte Jesse Austin Moore to his Auntie Eva Pilben during active service in France 1916; and two letters from No. 279 Pte Frederick William Olney Dingle (signed ‘Olney’ or ‘Ol’), whilst on active service in England and France, to his Auntie Eva Pilben (Mrs W.J. Pilben) and to his cousin Zena Lillian Pilben 1916-1917, and 1 small photograph of four Australian soldiers in England (died of wounds 11 October 1917, France).

Langsford from the position of vice-president (1916); papers in connection with the secretary of the RSA (1916); papers re amalgamation with the Barrier RSA, Broken Hill (1917); correspondence (1916-1917); papers relating to the formation of the national league of the Returned Sailors’ and Soldiers’ Imperial League of Australia (RSSILA) and amalgamation of state associations including draft constitution (1916), and proceedings, minutes and agenda of the first RSSILA Congress held in Brisbane held in September 1916, discussing the formation of the RSSILA.

Microfiche copy of the diary kept by No. 11 Corporal Howard Both, from Caltowie, South Australia, Cable Section of Divisional Signal Company 1, from the time after his enlistment in the Australian Imperial Expeditionary Force in August 1914, until December 1914. Howard Both worked as an electrical engineer before he enlisted on 18 August 1914, aged 20, and embarked from Melbourne on the HMAT A10 ‘Karroo’ on 20 October 1914. In 1916 he was promoted to Lieutenant and was recommended for a Military Cross for his great devotion to duty. He returned to Australia in May 1918 due to severe illness. Photocopies available. Letter from Syria 78 1941. 0.5 cm. Letter written by Jim Harvey on ‘Armistice Day’ to Bryant William Shepherdson (who served with the RAAF). Private Harvey, SX 1292, was serving with the No.3 Platoon H.Q. Company, 10th Battalion in Syria at the time of writing. It was written in reply to a letter sent by Bryant which was salvaged from a ship that had sunk; Harvey sent part of the envelope in which he had received the salvaged item as proof of this, together with an explanatory note.
