FELIX HERNANDEZ PERFECT GAME - August 15, 2012

Felix Hernandez recorded the 23rd perfect game in Major League history Aug. 15 in a 1-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays at Safeco Field in Seattle. Here are some statistical facts about the historical performance… • The perfect game was the 23rd in Major League history, the 14th the American League, and the first in Mariners history 5,700th game in club history including post-season). • The last Mariners starting pitcher to record a no-hitter was Chris Bosio on April 22, 1993 vs the Red Sox at the Kingdome… was the 3rd individual no-hitter in club history (Bosio and ) and the 4th overall (1 combined no-hitter). • The closest the Mariners were to a perfect game prior to Felix was on April 20, 1990 when Brian Homan had a perfecto through 8.2 innings at Oakland before Ken Phelps hit a home run. • At 26 years, 129 days, Felix became the youngest pitcher to throw a perfect game since Mike Witt (24.072) in 1984. • Felix became the second pitcher born outside the United States to throw a perfect game…Dennis Martinez, who was born in Nicaragua, retired all 27 batters he faced for the Expos at Dodger Stadium in 1991. • Felix recorded 12 strikeouts in the perfect game, the 4th-most in a perfect game trailing 14 by (1965) and (2012) and 13 by Randy Johnson (2004)…it was the 4th game this season in which Felix struck out 12+ batters, after entering the 2012 season with four 12+ strikeout games in his career. • The perfect game produced a game score (Bill James stat calculating a pitcher’s dominance) of 99…it was the 9th time in the DH era that an AL pitcher recorded score that high in a 9-inning game, and the 4th-highest in any perfect game. • Was the 7th perfect game in MLB history won 1-0 (last: Roy Halladay, 5/29/10 @FLA), and first in the AL since 1984.

The perfect game continues the recent dominance that has elevated King Felix to the front of the race… • The perfect game improved Felix to 11-5 with a 2.60 ERA in 25 starts on the season (52 ER, 180.0 IP). • Extended his personal winning streak to 7 games, going 7-0 with a 1.56 ERA (16 ER, 92.1 IP) over his last 12 starts…his last loss was June 12 at San Diego. • Tossed his Major League-leading 4th shutout this season, all coming over a 10-start stretch since June 28. • Shutouts came against the Red Sox (6/28), Rangers (7/14), Yankees (8/4) and Rays (8/15). • Entered this season with only 4 career shutouts in previous 7 seasons. • The 1-0 victory marked Felix’s third 1-0 shutout of the season (setting a Mariners single-season record and tying the Mariners career record)…he became the first pitcher since Bob Ojeda (NYM) in 1988 to record a trio of 1-0 shutouts.

Felix’s performance also marked the second perfect game to be thrown at Safeco Field this season (Philip Humber, April 21 vs. Seattle) and the third no-hitter (Seattle used 6 pitchers in combined no-hitter June 8 vs. the Dodgers). • The Mariners became the first team in MLB history to throw a perfect game, and have one thrown against them in the same season. • Safeco Field became the first venue to host two perfect games in the same season, and joins old (3), Dodger Stadium (2) and Oakland Coliseum (2) as the only stadiums to host multiple perfect games. • Safeco Field is the first stadium with 3+ no-hitters in the same season since 1917 Sportsman’s Park (St. Louis Browns). • The last team prior to Seattle with 2 no-hitters in a regular season was the 1973 Angels ( 2 no-hitters).

And the perfect game added to the 2012 Major League season that may need to be labeled the season of no- hitters… • Was the 6th no-hitter this season, trailing only 1990 and 1991 (7) for most no-hitters in a single season (since 1901)…the 1908, 1917 and 1969 seasons also produced 6 no-hitters. • First season in MLB history with three perfect games (Philip Humber, Matt Cain, Felix Hernandez). • 63 days since the last perfect game (Matt Cain, June 13) was the 3rd-smallest date range in MLB history between perfect games ( & Roy Halladay – 20 days in 2010; Philip Humber & Matt Cain – 53 days in 2012).
