Clio a reçu 341 Résumés/abstracts/mots-clés/keywords 345 Auteur.e.s 357 Glossaire 363 Éditorial Leora AUSLANDER & Sylvie STEINBERG Le numéro 44 de la revue Clio, Femmes, Genre, Histoire propose un parcours de longue durée à travers l’histoire des juifs, de la judéité et du judaïsme. C’est, en effet, ce triptyque, ainsi que la vie en diaspora, qui rend l’analyse du genre dans la tradition juive si spécifique. Le judaïsme est, bien sûr, une religion, mais il n’est pas qu’une religion. « Peuple », « Nation », « Ethnie », « Culture », ou « Communauté de destin » ? Les juifs ne cessent depuis des siècles de débattre sur leur identité, et ils ont produit quantité d’ouvrages de fiction, de méditation ou d’humour sur cette question. C’est au regard de cette complexité et de la diversité des situations historiques dans lesquelles les juifs ont vécu que nous avons choisi de mettre un “s” à Judaïsme. Ce numéro de Clio s’intéressera tout autant aux périodes où les juifs se sont constitués comme un peuple, contrôlant un territoire et obéissant à un gouvernement, dans la Judée antique ou dans l’État d’Israël actuel, qu’aux périodes et situations, bien plus nombreuses et durables, où ils se sont regroupés en communautés diasporiques. De l’Égypte des Fatimides à l’Allemagne médiévale, de la péninsule ibérique à l’Empire ottoman, de la Russie tsariste à l’Éthiopie contemporaine, de New York à Berlin ou Paris, les modes de vie et les conditions historiques sont aussi placés sous le signe de la diversité. La dispersion à travers le monde et la cohabitation avec d’autres cultures – voire l’intégration ou l’assimilation – ont rendu l’expérience juive plurielle. Malgré tout, les juifs de la diaspora ont souvent été reliés entre eux par le récit de leurs mythes et de leur histoire, par leurs langues, par des traditions culinaires, musicales, théâtrales ou vestimentaires partagées. En tant que « culture » ou 8 Leora Auslander & Sylvie Steinberg « ethnicité », la judéité a ainsi plus en commun avec les modes d’identification et de distinction des autres peuples diasporiques et minoritaires qu’avec d’autres groupes définis par la religion. Parmi les ciments qui unissent les juifs entre eux, il faut néanmoins revenir au rôle essentiel de la religion mosaïque. On pourrait dire qu’elle a joué et joue toujours un rôle, même pour les agnostiques et les athées tentés périodiquement de se demander ce qu’il adviendrait de la judéité si plus personne ne pratiquait le judaïsme – un trait d’union dialectique et humoristique qui relie aussi les juifs entre eux. Là encore, les différents contextes étatiques et diasporiques dans lesquels les juifs se sont trouvés ainsi que les formes de discrimination, d’acculturation et d’assimilation qu’ils ont connues, ont eu une influence sur leurs croyances et leurs pratiques religieuses, faisant émerger des « mouvements » mystiques et messianiques à côté de « courants » identifiables à des modes de vie et des pratiques collectives – libéraux, conservateurs ou orthodoxes. Même si histoire des juifs, histoire de la judéité et histoire du judaïsme sont étroitement imbriquées, nous avons choisi de privilégier l’étude des croyances, des rituels, des courants théologiques et spirituels plutôt que les aspects sociaux, économiques, politiques ou culturels de l’histoire du monde juif. Il s’agit ici de croiser les problématiques et approches de l’histoire des religions et celles de l’histoire des femmes et du genre1. Comme pour d’autres groupes religieux, le sens commun désigne souvent la « tradition » religieuse comme la clef de voûte de la conception du genre que se font les juifs depuis des générations, qu’il s’agisse de l’accès différencié des hommes et des femmes à l’étude des textes, de leur participation respective aux différents rites, de leurs conceptions et pratiques afférentes au mariage, à la sexualité ou à la procréation2. Dans le cas des juifs, cette tradition religieuse étant un dénominateur commun qui plonge ses racines dans la plus haute Antiquité, l’importance accordée à la religion, trop souvent conçue comme immuable, paraît d’autant

    2000.03.07. CEU 1 SPLIT IN TWO OR DOUBLED? Zsuzsa Hetényi The title is taken from an article by Iosif Bikerman published in 1910.1 There it is presented as a statement (‘not split in two but doubled’), but I shall consider it as a question because the history of Russian Jewish literature is not only a thing of the past: Russian Jewish authors began to ask questions that we continue to ask even today and that we cannot yet answer. My purpose in this paper is threefold: to discuss some theoretical questions, to give a short survey of the 80 years of Russian Jewish literature, and finally to analyse a short story by Lev Lunz. First, I would like to say something about how I arrived at this topic. In 1991 I published a book on Isaac Babel’s Red Cavalry,2 a collection of 35 stories based on the writer’s experiences with Budenny’s Cavalry in 1920. The main issue for me was what problems led Babel to this unusual form of self-expression. The most important layer of this cycle of stories is Babel’s duality, which is expressed in various ways. ‘I am an outsider, in long trousers, I don’t belong, I’m all alone’, he writes in his diary of 1920.3 Babel is ambivalent about his Jewishness – he belongs organically to his people and at the same time he finds them repellent. It was founded in 18th-century Eastern Europe by Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov as a reaction against overly legalistic Judaism. His example began the characteristic veneration of leadership in Hasidism as embodiments and intercessors of Divinity for the followers. [1] Contrary to this, Hasidic teachings cherished the sincerity and concealed holiness of the unlettered common folk, and their equality with the scholarly elite. The emphasis on the Immanent Divine presence in everything gave new value to prayer and deeds of kindness, alongside rabbinical supremacy of study, and replaced historical mystical (kabbalistic) and ethical (musar) asceticism and admonishment with Simcha, encouragement, and daily fervor.[2] Hasidism comprises part of contemporary Haredi Judaism, alongside the previous Talmudic Lithuanian-Yeshiva approach and the Sephardi and Mizrahi traditions. Its charismatic mysticism has inspired non-Orthodox Neo-Hasidic thinkers and influenced wider modern Jewish denominations, while its scholarly thought has interested contemporary academic study. Each Hasidic Jews praying in the Hasidic dynasty follows its own principles; thus, Hasidic Judaism is not one movement but a synagogue on Yom Kippur, by collection of separate groups with some commonality. There are approximately 30 larger Hasidic Maurycy Gottlieb groups, and several hundred smaller groups. Though there is no one version of Hasidism, individual Hasidic groups often share with each other underlying philosophy, worship practices, dress (borrowed from local cultures), and songs (borrowed from local cultures).

The goal is to show that the ordination of the first woman rabbi in the United States initiated Jewish feminism, and while this raised awareness, full-equality for Jewish women currently remains unachieved. This has been done by examining such events at the ordination process of Sally Priesand, reviewing the scholarship of Jewish women throughout the waves of Jewish feminism, and examining the perspectives of current Reform rabbis (one woman and one man). Upon the examination of these events and perspectives, it becomes clear that the full-equality of women is a continual struggle within all branches of American Judaism. This research highlights the importance of bringing to light an issue in the religion of Judaism that remains unnoticed, either purposefully or unintentionally by many, inside and outside of the religion.     Sybil Sheridan History of Women in the Rabbinate: a Case of Communal Amnesia* It seems strange to be offering as history something that has in the main occurred in my own lifetime. Part of this makes me feel very old, as when my son asked me: “Mummy, was it the first world war or the second world war when you were a little girl?” But the history actually goes back quite some way: not just to 1976, when Rabbi Jacqueline Tabick was first ordained in England, nor to the ordination of Rabbi Sally Priesand in the USA in 1972, but at least a century. Why have we not heard of it? Because up to this moment, the history of women in the Rabbinate can be summed up quite neatly as a history of forgetting – a case of communal amnesia. To explain, I must apologise for beginning with a very personal moment in my own life, the day in October 1993 when Dr Hermann Simon, director of the Zentrum Judaicum Foundation in Berlin, came to the Leo Baeck College in London and presented a gift: a photograph and the ordination certificate of Rabbi Regina Jonas, ordained in Germany in 1935. The story of Rabbi Jonas may be well known to some; to others it will be new. Regina Jonas was born on 3 August 1902 in Berlin1 and at the age of 21 began working as a teacher of religion in the Orthodox Jewish School where her brother, Abraham also taught.     Judaism Feminism and Judaism Feminism and Judaism Summary: For most of its history, Judaism has traditionally been a patriarchal religion; however, women’s movements since the mid-20th century have advocated for and achieved greater equality for women in many Jewish denominations. Jewish women are now ordained as rabbis in all non-Orthodox denominations, and many Jewish theologians are expanding their field of interest to include the roles and characters of biblical and historical Jewish women. One of the greatest challenges to Judaism in America has been the advent of the women’s movement. For most of its history, Judaism was a patriarchal religious tradition, relegating women to a lower status than men. The traditional domain of women in Jewish life was the home, which—despite the protests of apologists—was not a religious institution with communal influence. Although women were responsible for preparing food, for example, it was the male rabbi who regulated the practice of kashrut, the Jewish dietary laws. Religious activities that took place in the public sphere outside the home, such as study, prayer, and acts of loving-kindness, were considered mandatory only for men. Women occupied a subsidiary space in the Jewish house of prayer and were scarcely admitted to the study house at all. While the Reform movement of the 19th century adopted some measures intended to equalize the role of women in the synagogue, not until the 1970s did the structure of Judaism begin to change in response to the feminist critique. Once the feminist revolution burst on the scene in the 1960s, it was only a matter of time before women’s rising consciousness of social and economic inequities would extend to religious communities as well.
