In his 45 years as a football coach, Phil Jones has come to fully understand that certain unplanned situations will arise during a game and completely change the course of the contest. Nothing, however, could compare to what the Shorter head coach and his team were a part of Thursday night at Barron Stadium. The Hawks were handed, perhaps, the program’s most heartbreak- ing defeat ever when visiting Mars Hill claimed a 41-30 non-conference defeat in a game that witnessed a massive offen- sive display – the two teams combined for a remarkable 1,020 total yards – and a more than an hour weather delay in the fourth quarter that switched the game’s momentum.
