On the eve of his 16th season at Valdosta State, James Dominey is anxious, a little nervous and very excited...much like he has been 15 other times. But there is one big difference from the years in Blazer basketball’s immediate past, the years since VSC joined the rough and tumble . This year Valdosta State has been picked by league coaches to finish second in the conference race behind Troy State, by far the highest pre season ranking the Blazers have enjoyed. In the four years of GSC play Valdosta State has had only moderate successes, finishing fourth twice and playing for the conference tournament championship once. With a solid group of veteran players returning, the Blazers look strong on paper, and that’s how pre-season rankings are made. “ Yes, the coaches have put the monkey on our back to a certain extent,” Dominey said, “ and that is a compliment to our program. It presents a great challenge to the coaches and players. It will take tremendous commitment on all our parts, which is what I expect. I can’t accept anything less.” Dominey learned early as a player that there are no short cuts to success. He was an outstanding prep player at Vienna High School where was team captain his senior season in 1962, averaging 28 points a game and earning a scholarship to Nor man Park Junior College.
