1 By: Bonnie Williams 2 Introduced: 11/18/04 3 Substituted: 11/18/04 4 Adopted: 11/18/04 5 6 7 FAIRBANKS NORTH STAR BOROUGH 8 9 RESOLUTION NO. 2004 - 73 10 11 A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE ALASKA TERRITORIAL GUARD 12 13 WHEREAS, the Alaska Territorial Guard was initially formed on December 14 31, 1941; and 15 16 WHEREAS, the Alaska Territorial Guard was the primary defense for the 17 coastline of the territory of Alaska; and 18 19 WHEREAS, more than 6,000 Alaskans voluntarily and successfully served 20 their territory and nation during and after World War II; and 21 22 WHEREAS, the Alaska Territorial Guard, now also known as the Alaska 23 State Defense Force, continues today with a major element within the Fairbanks North 24 Star Borough; and 25 26 WHEREAS, this element provided security on the bridge at the Yukon 27 River immediately following the horrifying events of September 11, 2001, and continues 28 to contribute in various ways to the security of our community, state and nation; and 29 30 WHEREAS, funding for the Alaska Territorial Guard, or Alaska State 31 Defense Force, is extremely limited but the contributions they can and do make are 32 large; and 33 34 WHEREAS, such contributions in turn free up elements of the Alaska 35 National Guard, State Troopers and other elements of security. 36 37 NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Assembly of the Fairbanks 38 North Star Borough thanks the Alaska Territorial Guard (Alaska State Defense Force) 39 and its current and past membership for their long and honorable service to Alaska and 40 the United States. 41 42 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Fairbanks North Star Borough 43 Assembly urges the State of Alaska to consider increasing funding to the Alaska 44 Territorial Guard (Alaska State Defense Force) in order to strengthen their ability to 45 respond and to serve. 46 Fairbanks North Star Borough, Alaska RESOLUTION NO. 2004 - 73 Page 1 of 2 47 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that copies of this resolution be forwarded 48 to the Governor of the State of Alaska, and members of the Interior Delegation to the 49 Alaska State Legislature. 50 51 PASSED AND APPROVED THIS 18th DAY OF NOVEMBER 2004. 52 53 54 Ayes: Romans, Hutchison, Sattley, Rex, Williams, Frank, Aldridge, Hopkins, Bartos 55 Noes: None Fairbanks North Star Borough, Alaska RESOLUTION NO. 2004 - 73 Page 2 of 2 .
