Conservative and far-right parties in Europe have seized upon issues of migration and cultural diversity, often engaging in fearmonger- ing about immigrant communities and playing upon some Europeans’ anxiety about rapid demographic change. Relations between the European Union—as well as many of its constituent member states—and Turkey have deteriorated dramatically in recent years. And since 2014, Turks abroad, in Europe and elsewhere around the world, have been able to vote in Turkish elections, leading to active campaigning by some Turkish leaders in European countries. EU EAST STRATCOM Task Force November 2015 The Eastern Partnership Review: “EU-related communication in Eastern Partnership countries” • Difficulties with adjusting to the new realm of communication The time for “SOS-communication” or “Send-Out-Stuff” method of distributing information is now in the past and the communicators have to be innovative and creative for finding new effective methods for disseminating their information. • EU information in often too technical, full of jargon, lacks human language Communicators are often tempted to take this shortcut and copy these texts directly into their communication materials without translating it into a simple language that people can understand. • EU-related communication work revolves around official visits and events Very often EU-related communication work and the related coverage is driven by the activities of politicians, EU dignitaries and official events, which produces information that does not appeal to most of the target audiences. Not much attention is paid to the actual content – what does this meeting signify or initiative mean for local people. The Elections Act the elections act (1997:157) (1997:157) 2 the elections act Chapter 1. General Provisions Section 1 This Act applies to elections to the Riksdag, to elections to county council and municipal assemblies and also to elections to the European Parliament. In connection with such elections the voters vote for a party with an option for the voter to express a preference for a particular candidate. Who is entitled to vote? Section 2 A Swedish citizen who attains the age of 18 years no later than on the election day and who is resident in Sweden or has once been registered as resident in Sweden is entitled to vote in elections to the Riksdag. These provisions are contained in Chapter 3, Section 2 of the Instrument of Government. Section 3 A person who attains the age of 18 years no later than on the election day and who is registered as resident within the county council is entitled to vote for the county council assembly. A person who attains the age of 18 years no later than on the election day and who is registered as resident within the municipality is entitled to vote for the municipal assembly. ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to explore potential relationships between public diplomacy and nation branding, two emerging fields of studies, which are increasingly being used in the same context. After examining the origins of the two concepts, a review of definitions and conceptualisations provide a point of departure for exploring the relationship between the two areas. Depending on the degree of integration, five conceptual models are outlined, each with potential pitfalls as well as advantages. According to the first approach, public diplomacy and nation branding are unrelated and do not share any common grounds. In other views, however, these concepts are related and it is possible to identify different degrees of integration between public diplomacy and nation branding. -
