Cast Bios Hilarie Burton ‘SURPRISED BY LOVE’ CAST BIOS HILARIE BURTON (Josie) – Growing up in the Theaters of Washington D.C. and Northern Virginia, Hilarie Burton knew early on in childhood that she was an odd bird and that her sanctuary was the stage. Her teen years brought awards and accolades, but it was the bright lights of NYC that became her fixation. Upon high school graduation, Burton promptly moved to the city and two weeks later started her career as one of MTV’s most popular VJ’s. Burton spent five years as a staple on the network, hosting a variety of productions, including MTV’s flagship show “Total Request Live” as well as numerous specials. She earned her footing as a producer when she was granted her own show, “MTV Hits.” From there, Burton got back in touch with her acting roots when she was cast as the lead, Peyton Sawyer, in the CW hit series “One Tree Hill,” which she starred in for six years. During her breaks from the series, Burton gained significant experience in the world of independent film, starring in “Our Very Own” alongside Allison Janney and Jason Ritter, “The List” with Malcolm McDowell, “Normal Adolescent Behavior” which was featured at the Tribeca Film Festival and “Solstice” directed by Dan Myrick of “Blair Witch Project” fame. Burton played Dakota Fanning’s mother in the award winning “Secret Life of Bees” and starred alongside Kris Kristofferson, Val Kilmer and Dwight Yoakam in “Provinces of Night.” Taking time off to start a family, Burton reemerged as the hardened yet beloved Sara Ellis on USA's "White Collar.” After three seasons there, she continued to stir up trouble, guest starring as a Kardashian-esque starlet on "Castle" and the adulteress Dr. Lauren Boswell on "Grey's Anatomy." Most recently, she was seen as the whip wielding domination therapist, Iona Payne, on ABC's "Forever." Meanwhile, her new role as a mother had softened her rebellious streak, and Burton found herself having wholesome fun in the family films "Christmas on the Bayou" and the Hallmark Channel Original Movie’s "Naughty or Nice" and now "Surprised by Love." 2015 will see the release of Burton's latest project - the 1970s coming of age story of a young boy who moves from India to the American South, "Good Ol Boy" stars Burton as the colorful wife of Jason Lee. In her free time, Burton lives on a farm in Upstate NY and runs the town candy store. She is partial to anything with chocolate and sea salt. ### PAUL CAMPBELL (Gridley) — Paul Campbell is best known for roles such as Billy, Mary McDonnell’s loyal assistant, in the Syfy Network’s “Battlestar Galactica” and nerdy Billy Morgan, star of NBC’s “Knight Rider” reboot. But his true passion lies in the world of comedy. Campbell is currently filming the television sitcom “Spun Out” and has recently appeared in the television series “Emily Owens, M.D.” and “Almost Heroes.” Campbell’s credits also include a lead role in Marc Fienberg’s “Play The Game,” opposite Doris Roberts, Andy Griffith and Marla Sokoloff, the lead in National Lampoon’s “Bag Boy” and a supporting role in “The Big Year,” opposite Owen Wilson, Jack Black and Steve Martin. He recently starred, with Naomi Judd and Chyler Leigh, in the Hallmark Channel Original Movie “Window Wonderland.” (more) HALLMARK CHANNEL / ‘SURPRISED BY LOVE– Cast Bios – Page 2 Well-versed in both comedy and drama, Campbell has emerged as one of TV and film’s most versatile and charismatic actors. ### TIM CONWAY (Grandad) – Tim Conway is best known for his work on “The Carol Burnett Show,” a legendary 11-year stint that garnered him six Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe and four generations of fans. Conway played the funny guy opposite Harvey Korman's straight man, often cracking up Korman midway through scenes. The spontaneous break in character became a hallmark to watch for in every episode. Conway's often-improvised humor, razor-sharp timing and unforgettable characters have made him one of the funniest and most authentic performers to grace the stage and studio in the last forty years. In 1989, Conway received his much deserved star on Hollywood's "Walk of Fame." In 2002, he and Korman were inducted into the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences' Hall of Fame. In 2005, the duo joined the rest of the Carol Burnett cast in receiving TV Land's Legend Award and, in 2008, Conway received his 7th Emmy Award for his Guest Appearance on “30 Rock.” Conway’s most successful films include Disney’s “The Apple Dumpling Gang” and “The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again,” as well as “The Private Eyes” and “The Prize Fighter,” both written by Conway and featuring his “The Apple Dumpling Gang” co-star and longtime friend, Don Knotts. Conway’s first book, What’s So Funny? My Hilarious Life, was released thru Simon & Schuster, Inc./Howard Books in October 2013 and hit the New York Times Best Seller list for five weeks. Conway resides in Encino, California, with his wife of thirty years. He has seven children and two grandchildren. --HALLMARK CHANNEL-- .

  • Building Self-Esteem
Building self-esteem Press-Telegram, Daily Breeze, Daily News February 11, 2008 By A.K. Whitney, Staff writer When Raven looks at herself in the mirror in the morning, the first word that pops into her head is "ugly." When Myra compares herself to pictures of Hollywood starlets in magazines, she feels like a monster. Charlotte worries that only black girls with light skin seem to wind up with the cute guys. But all the outsider sitting on a folding metal chair about 10 feet away can see is three young women full of youth and potential. And yes, each is also pretty - Raven has great hair, Myra has lovely eyes, and Charlotte's dark brown skin glows with health. But it's often very hard to turn off the negative voices in your head, particularly when they're reinforced not just by the media but, worse, by peers and family. For Raven, Myra, Charlotte and 16 other young women who are students at Gertz-Ressler High School in Los Angeles, though, there is help. They all signed up to take part in a yearlong program organized by the Step Up Women's Network and sponsored by the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty. Step Up Women's Network, a nonprofit organization, was started by talent agent Karen Popofsky Kramer after her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. The organization started in Los Angeles but has since opened chapters nationwide. The aim of this particular high-school program: helping young women, particularly those of economically disadvantaged backgrounds, work on their self-esteem.

The word is “hunger.” If you are hungry and nobody will buy your orig- inal idea, you might get lucky, direct a Kellogg’s cornflakes commercial and take home a few boxes. —Mel Brooks, 1971 n the early 1970s, Mel Brooks had reason to find himself in an ironic I position as far as his career was concerned. He had already won Acad- emy Awards and Emmys, and had hit radio commercials and three suc- cessful comedy albums (such as The 2000 Year Old Man). He was a veteran of the writing teams for two of the most cherished series of Amer- ican television’s golden age: Your Show of Shows and Caesar’s Hour. Brooks’s recent association with the highly successful sitcom Get Smart had enhanced his visibility with the public and given him additional industry credibility.COPYRIGHTED Although his movie TheMATERIAL Twelve Chairs (1970) had failed to make any tangible impact at the box office, The Producers (1968) was well on its way to becoming a cult favorite. Yet Brooks was now unable to get any new show business projects off the ground and into production. How many times, he must have won- dered, did he have to crash through the establishment’s barriers before he gained solid acceptance from his peers and the public? • Tim Conway - the Good-Humor Man Page 1 of 3
Tim Conway - The Good-Humor man Page 1 of 3 printed from AmericanProfile.com on 4/5/2008 Tim Conway - The Good-Humor man by Paulette Cohn The family room of one of America’s favorite funnymen is paneled in dark, mahogany- stained wood, a stark contrast to the sunny comedy for which the star of McHale’s Navy and The Carol Burnett Show is best known. Even more surprising is the news that Tim Conway bought the wood at the lumber mill, cut and installed the panels, then finished it all by himself. “I have all my fingers,” he quips, wiggling all 10 digits in his house in Encino, Calif. “It’s the sign of a good carpenter.” Conway, 73, traces his handiness with a hammer to high school shop class, one of his favorite subjects because childhood dyslexia made it difficult for him to read. “People thought that I was kidding when I would read out loud in school, so they started laughing,” he recalls. “For instance, the book They Were Expendable, I read as ‘They were expandable.’ People were going, ‘This guy is great! Expandable! What are you talking about, rubber people?’” Conway liked the response. “I thought, ‘I must be funny, so I might as well continue with this.’” Wholesome entertainment His ability to make people smile eventually led him out of Chagrin Falls, Ohio (pop. 4,024), to Hollywood and a successful career on television and in the movies. His early success on McHale’s Navy led to a string of other memorable roles, most notably alongside Carol Burnett; Conway became a vital cog in Burnett’s weekly comedy machine during the 1960s and ’70s.
