The duties of the Commission included investigating and interrogating persons, groups, and organizations engaged in activities of an unlawful nature against the sovereignty of the state and against the peace and dignity of the state. The Commission also held hearings and recommended legislation. The Commission ended in 1978 after the passage of the Sunset Law of 1976. Brief Agency History of the State Sovereignty Commission The State Sovereignty Commission was established in 1963 by an act of the Alabama legislature. As part of the Executive Branch, the Commission’s objective was "to protect the sovereignty of the state from encroachment the federal government and to resist by all legal means usurpation by any federal agency of rights and powers reserved to the states, according to the Constitution." The Commission’s duties included employing persons to investigate and examine means to protect rights for the Governor and Legislature, to make contracts, and to receive and expend funds appropriated by the Legislature and/or any other source. The Sovereignty Commission’s Executive Secretary kept records of proceedings and its receipts and disbursements, provided that such records were exempt from the public records laws of Alabama, but would be made available to members of the Commission and of the Legislature, upon their request in writing. The Commission ended in 1978 after passage of the Sunset Law of 1976. View list of the Legislative Commission to Preserve the Peace
