Wallace Collection LPR124 SERIES DESCRIPTION SERIES I: ADMINISTRATIVE FILES This series consists of correspondence pertaining to Alabama Governor George C. Wallace’s gubernatorial administrations and campaigns, plus his presidential campaigns. It is organized by chronologically, then by topic. Similar information appears within each sub-series. The correspondence provides valuable insight into George C. Wallace’s political ambitions, campaign strategies, and the political environment of many cities, states, and regions. The campaign material details the election laws of various political jurisdictions; preparations for speaking engagements; relationships between the Wallace campaigns and various political organizations; and documentation of support from large and small contributors. Personnel and state administrative information is also included throughout the administrative files. A. 1951-1961 Box 1, Folders 1-2 This contains correspondence between George C. Wallace, James E. Howard and Mrs. Smith. Arranged alphabetically. B. 1960-1969 Box 1, Folder 3 - Box 25 The presidential campaign of 1968 and the gubernatorial races of 1962 and 1968 are included here. Campaign schedules and detailed files on large electoral states such as California, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan and Missouri are included. Trial transcripts from United States of America vs Macon County Board of Education are of particular interest. The trial pertains to the issue of segregation. Also included in sub-series B are state proclamations from Governors George C. Wallace and Lurleen Wallace in regards to bombings in Birmingham and Mobile, Alabama. This sub-series contains a detailed account of the George C. Wallace Southeast Asia Tour in 1969. Also available are Wallace’s daily schedules and appointment books. Primary correspondents include: George C. Wallace, James Estomo, James Taylor Harding, Marvin Griffin, Hubert Humphrey, Curtis LeMay and William Shearer. Arranged alphabetically. C. 1969-1970 Boxes 26 - 34 This centers primarily on the 1970 Alabama Gubernatorial Primary. Items of interest include campaign correspondence, gubernatorial primary statistics, a large volume of Western Union telegrams to George C. Wallace and a daily appointment book for 1970. There are several administrative files significant to the governorship of Alabama, covering the following topics: Alabama Ethics Commission, proposed legislation for 1971 and Dauphin Island. D. 1971-1979 Boxes 35 - 45 This contains Wallace campaign correspondence concerning the 1972 and 1976 presidential campaigns, gubernatorial campaign of 1974, and the U.S. Senate campaign of 1978. Also included are various visitor registers, daily appointment books and diaries. Primary correspondents include George C. Wallace, Dwight Coffman, Elvin Stanton and Jack Wright. Arranged alphabetically. E. 1980-1986 Boxes 46 - 84 George C. Wallace 1982 gubernatorial race highlights this period. Contributions, election returns and correspondence for the 1982 Alabama gubernatorial campaign are contained in this series. Primary correspondents include George C. Wallace, Arthur Eaves, Jack House and Forrest H. James. Arranged alphabetically. SERIES II: BANKING FILES Series II consists primarily of banking records of George C. Wallace’s campaigns from 1960- 1985. Banking documents include correspondence, and various checking and savings accounts in over ten different banks. A. 1960-1969 Boxes 85 - 90 These records include bank account reconciliations, bank statements, canceled checks, voided checks, check registers, deposit records and wage and tax statements. Arranged alphabetically, thereunder chronologically. B. 1970-1979 Boxes 91 - 101 These records include bank account reconciliations, canceled checks, check registers, daily deposit records, deposit records, Wallace medical accounts, Wallace Senate Campaign bank statements and materials relating to the Wallace Special Fund. Arranged alphabetically, thereunder chronologically. C. 1980-1985 Boxes 102 - 104 These records include canceled checks, check registers, deposit records, Wallace campaign records from 1982 to 1985, Wallace campaign payroll information, Wallace campaign tax information and Wallace repurchase agreements. Arranged alphabetically, thereunder chronologically. SERIES III: FINANCIAL STATEMENTS Series III consists primarily of invoices, bills, contributions and expense receipts of George C. Wallace’s campaigns from 1960-1983. Particularly significant is the vast number of campaign contribution receipts that highlight small contributors and large corporations. George C. Wallace Collection LPR124 SERIES III: FINANCIAL STATEMENTS (cont.) A. 1960-1969 Boxes 105 - 112 Financial expenses and contributions comprise this sub-series. There is a significant quantity of South Central Bell Telephone Company and Western Union receipts. Arranged alphabetically, thereunder chronologically. B. 1970-1979 Boxes 113 - 126 The significance of these records is in the amount of personal expense receipts of George C. Wallace. Many of these receipts relate to everyday campaign expenditures and post-May 1972 medical expenses. These records also include insurance expenses, investments, organizational membership dues, 1970 payroll records and tax information including Wallace income from 1973-1976. Arranged alphabetically, thereunder chronologically. C. 1980-1983 Boxes 127 - 143 This includes a vast collection of monthly expense receipts detailing the 1982 Alabama gubernatorial campaign. Significant to this sub-series is the enormous volume of Wallace campaign contribution deposit records. Arranged alphabetically, thereunder chronologically. SERIES IV: PHOTOGRAPHS, 1897-1986 Boxes 144 - 154 & 169 This series visually documents the political career of George C. Wallace. Included are photographs of George C. Wallace in his youth, family photographs, gubernatorial and presidential campaign photographs, publicity photographs, Wallace staff and acquaintances. Loosely arranged.. SERIES V: MISCELLANEOUS PUBLISHED WORKS, 1968-1986 Boxes 155-165 This series contains various published works; either donated to George C. Wallace or purchased for his personal use. Arranged alphabetically. SERIES VI: CERTIFICATES OF AWARD, INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGES, AND AWARD PLAQUES, 1970-1986 Boxes 166-167 This series contains various awards presented to George C. Wallace throughout his political career. Arranged chronologically. SERIES VII: GIFTS OF APPRECIATION TO GEORGE C. WALLACE, 1968-1986 Boxes 172 - 174 This series contains various gifts presented to George C. Wallace throughout his political career. Arranged chronologically. George C. Wallace collection consist of The Wallace Stand 8 track audio tapes; one 70mm tape of Wallace election night in 1974 furnished by WKAB T.V., and a statement from Mrs. Buck Oliver of Auburn, Alabama. Also included are over 183 audio cassette tapes recorded of Governor George C. Wallace during his political years; commentaries submitted by citizens on tape and various personal choices of music given to the Governor by his supporters. Unarranged. Phonograph Records Various phonograph records ranging in sizes from R.P.M. 45 to R.P.M. 33.3. Most of these phonograph records are of Wallace campaign songs. Unarranged. Transparencies Significant to this section are the transparencies of Governor Lurleen Wallace’s funeral in 1967. Other transparencies include various State of Alabama governor seals, Alabama flags, campaign and miscellaneous personnel transparencies. Unarranged. Visual Tapes Wallace Campaign, A New Day For America 15 minute reel, VHS tape of concerned parents, Governor Wallace’s address to the opening session of the legislature on July 7, 1978 and a VHS tape on Transcender Wheelchair, July 19, 1983. Unarranged. Artifacts The artifact section contains an array of memorabilia generated by George C. Wallace’s political campaigns or donated to him during his political career.
