2020–21 RIDLEY COLLEGE`````1 ATHLETICS

Committment to Daily Physical Activity

Ridley has always valued the connection between mind, body and spirit. At no other time in our lives have these three components of human well-being been more intertwined or important to nurture.

As a national leader in physical literacy and , Ridley is dedicated to our tradition of quality daily physical activity and athletics. From our Kindergarten through Upper School, we will endeavour to keep students active and engaged every day.

These activities are being responsibly developed and managed, using the best research and timely science-based evidence from public health authorities, along with guidance from our provincial and national sport organizations and the Canadian Sport Institute’s medical team.

In our campus facilities, we have developed comprehensive plans related to capacity, flow, enhanced sanitation and hygiene, and daily schedules. In terms of physical activity, we will explore a phased approach that is responsive to provincial legislation, the climate of the pandemic in the Niagara region and Ridley’s robust community screening and hygiene practices.

In Upper School this means:

• Morning and afternoon recreational (Sport for Life) and competitive sport sessions may evolve from physically distanced individual training, to small team practices and -like situations, to competitions, depending on the health status of the Niagara region and that of our competitors.

• Regular physical education classes will build sport skill competency and confidence, develop coaching and sport leadership, and influence our community in positive ways.

• Interschool sport matches and travel will be based on the health status of Niagara and our competitors' regions. Our diverse sport associations have developed a variety of schedule options that could include regional and interprovincial play. The CISAA has contingency plans which include altering schedules and moving out of their traditional seasons, in order for student athletes to enjoy the benefits of competition.

When it comes to physical activity, there is no remote or virtual replacement for the needs of the mind and body. We all need to be active, engaged and creative—Ridley’s

plan endeavours to ensure that our community continues to safely reap the rewards of an active lifestyle.

Thank you for supporting the athletic pursuits of your child and allowing them make lifelong memories with us at Ridley.

Yours in sport,

Jay W. Tredway ’96 Courtney Smith ‘06 Director of Athletics Assistant Director, Athetics

Review of Fees

As the most active school in Canada, Ridley boasts a robust and comprehensive competitive athletic programme. Ridley teams carry our orange and black Tiger banner locally, provincially and internationally in a variety of different sports. Though the school’s athletic budget covers the vast majority of cost associated with sport, there are components where families incur additional costs. We believe that you will find tremendous value in the fees associated with athletics based on the experiences and the exposure your child will receive as a member of our competitive family.

• Uniforms: For a variety of reasons (legacy, spirit, hygiene, etc.) all student athletes are required to purchase a base training kit (t-shirt, black shorts, hoodie, sweatpants) which can be worn for all sports and physical education classes. They will also purchase the individual team uniforms which for most teams include the game jersey(s). You can estimate the cost to range between $50.00- $200.00 CAD per competitive sport team your child plays on which will be charged to your family account.

• Mouthguards: Of special note to all of our athletes playing field hockey and is the CISAA (Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Association) and Ridley mandatory mouth guard policy. All students need to have a properly fitted mouth guard in order to compete. This is also strongly recommended for all basketball and soccer players. Field hockey and ice hockey student athletes who do not arrive to campus with a proper mouth guard will be fitted for one by our dental associates in the first week of school. The cost of this durable custom fit mouth guard will be $35.00-$40.00 CAD and will be billed to your family account with the term athletic fees.

• Events/Overnight Trips: We also have events that include CAIS (Canadian Accredited Independent School) National Tournaments and OFSAA (Ontario Federation Secondary Athletic Association) Championships that some teams may qualify for. For these specific events, the school has a cost sharing formula that it uses to determine the fees covered by the school and those paid for by the participating families. Any competitive team with at least one overnight trip = $250.00 - $500.00 CAD per athlete, while a competitive team that only plays CISAA league sport = no additional cost.

• Prep Sports: In our Prep Sport Programme (ice hockey, basketball, rowing), there are additional fees associated with the extended competition schedules these teams play outside of our traditional CISAA league matches. All of these seasonal costs are outlined by the coaches in a pre-season letter to parents.
