By joining our college credit, enrichment, or middle school program at Penn State University, you will experience a “SUMMER LIKE NEVER BEFORE”…a summer filled with challenging, yet exciting classes… a summer filled with new friendships from all over the globe…a summer filled with the finest sports and athletics available only on a “Big Ten” campus like Penn State…a summer filled with exciting nightlife in the “Ultimate College Town”…a summer filled with weekends off campus, the annual Central Pennsylvania Arts Festival and exciting events on campus…a summer that has “something for everyone”…a summer filled with activities, activities, activities! 1 Summer Study Programs offer 5 different programs at Penn State University. Our 6 ⁄2 -week, Summer Study at Penn State Program offers students completing 10th, 11th or 12th grade the unique opportunity to earn COLLEGE CREDITS as well as experience college life in a relaxed summertime atmosphere prior to entering college. With the “pressure off,” summer academic life permits time for successful development, personal growth and maturation, study skills, time management, self-confidence, community living and independence. Our 6-week “Triple Play” Program brings a unique blend of academics, internships and community service all rolled into one fantastic program. Students completing 9th, 10th or 11th grade will choose 1 intensive workshop for 2 weeks, get real-life work experience through a hands-on internship for 2 weeks, and give back to the community with 2 weeks of service. The Triple Play is sure to be a winner! 1 Our 3 ⁄2 -week, Summer Enrichment at Penn State Program and 2-week, Intensive Workshop Programs offer students completing 9th, 10th or 11th grade the ability to experience the “beat and pulse” of an up and run- ning university before they actually attend a matriculated university. This “head start” on college life per- mits each student an easy transition from high school to college. Students attend enrichment style classes where a heavy emphasis is placed on group interaction and discussion based topics. Our Middle School program offers students currently completing 8th grade the opportunity to learn in an environment where our directors, administrators, and staff work with all students on a personal level, ensuring the finest care, supervision and mutual respect. Learning this summer is easy in our 4-week or 2-week Middle School Programs. Class categories range from intellectual and creative pursuits (The Smarts and The Arts) to atypical classroom subjects (Physical Ways and Lazy Days). In the classroom, on the stage, on the dance floor, on the courts and on the ball fields, Summer Study students are engaged in activities all day. Our goal is for students to learn, both in and out of the classroom, to adjust to community-style living, and to set their sights on SUCCESS! Academic programs are NOT all the same. All of our pre-college programs offer Kaplan SAT Preparation (pg. 16), Special Features (pg. 9), and exciting enrichment classes (pg. 16-18). The summer calendar is packed with nightly events in the Ultimate College Town: shows, live concerts, dance clubs, ice skating, movies, broomball, skit night, water sports night, Minute to Win It, SSP Fashion Show, casino night, Summer Study Idol, go-karts, our farewell banquet and more. Creatively planned daytime events and activities revolve around the interests of students in the program: sports clinics, tournaments and pick up games, discussion groups, jewelry making, tie dying, poets corner, special events and more! All in all, these years are the most important and the most impressionable years of adolescent life. The security and confidence gained through our programs will prove to be invaluable for success throughout high school and the college years. There IS a difference in programs!!! We are proud that more high school students choose a summer program at PENN STATE UNIVERSITY than any other college campus. We invite you to ask previous participants why! EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This technical assignment provides an introduction to the construction project management techniques for Medlar Field at Lubrano Park which is located in University Park, Pennsylvania. In this assignment, the project is analyzed in terms of existing condition concerns and site plan, local conditions, client information, project delivery system, and construction manager staffing plan. Medlar Field at Lubrano Park is a fast-track traditional project delivery system. Barton Malow Company was hired by Penn State University to serve as the construction management agency for the project. L. Robert Kimball & Associates is the lead project architect hired by the University. The chosen site for the project is an open field that has only been used for Penn State football parking. There is a significant north/south elevation change on the site; however the design incorporates a balanced site approach. The Pennsylvania State University is a very experienced client when delivering a building with many standards already set in place during construction. Even though the project is only $23.8 million in construction costs, the staffing plan still shows the needed representatives from a construction company to deliver a successful project. Technical Assignment #1 Page 1 of 11 B. SITE PLAN OF EXISTING CONDITIONS Please see Appendix A for Existing Conditions Site Plan.

Recycle on the Go Success Story Recycling at Penn State’s Beaver Stadium With a 13-year-old recycling program, The Pennsylvania State University’s (Penn State) Beaver Stadium in the past diverted nearly 30 tons of recyclables per year from local landfills. A new initiative to promote recycling in the stadium’s tailgating area has helped Penn State more than triple its old recycling record, collecting 112 tons in 2008. Proceeds from the sale of the recycled materials are donated to the local United Way—more than $54,000 to date. • Football at Penn State
A COMMUNITY IN A COW PASTURE: FOOTBALL AT PENN STATE Benjamin Paul Phillips A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2009 Committee: Marilyn Motz, Advisor Esther Clinton ii ABSTRACT Marilyn Motz, Advisor In this thesis, Benjamin Phillips explored how community is created around Penn State football. Phillips explored why an event like a Penn State football game inspires thousands of people to unite around it and turn a sixty minute game played by twenty-odd young athletes (with whom the fans have little to no contact) into a multiple day celebration of community. For those who choose to define themselves in part by their sports allegiance, it is Phillips’ contention that they exhibit the characteristics of the imagined community described by Benedict Anderson in Imagined Communities, expanding the discourse beyond natural identities and communities. Because of the perceived ubiquity and normalcy of sports, Penn State football provides an excellent site for the exploration of created identities and communities. This thesis provides an academic look at the cultural significance of the community created through Penn State fandom and the broader implications of a community created around sports. The research was specifically centered on Phillips’ interviews with fans of Penn State football about stadium atmosphere, music, and tailgating. The actual game is not the only aspect which inspires fandom and pride within post-millennial college football. Instead, team histories, nostalgia, stadiums, stadium traditions, fan activities, songs, cheers, and geography all play a role in creating “football experiences.” The first chapter of the thesis focused on the postmodern bricolage of media and genres used in stadium videos and cheers that work to create feelings of belonging and community.
