African Critical Inquiry Programme WORKSHOP 2017 Secret Affinities: A workshop in critical reading and an interrogation of the city in Africa via Walter Benjamin’s Das Passagen-Werk Satyagraha House, Johannesburg, 22 to 23 March A. Roads & Journeys 1. Jonathan Cane Cruising the Transvaal: Queer Inventories and Itineraries The project takes as its starting point Halberstam’s argument for the ‘utility of getting lost over finding our way’, of conjuring ‘a Benjaminian stroll or a situationist derivé, an ambulatory journey through the unplanned, the unexpected, the improvised, and the surprising’ (2011: 15-16). Cruising the Transvaal responds to the queerer aspects of Malcomess and Kreutzfeldt’s Benjaminian ‘stroll’ in Not No Place: Johannesburg. Fragments of Spaces and Times (2013) and contributes to an unfinished, tentative and thoroughly un-objective encyclopedia of the city. My concern is with what could be called queer spaces in the Transvaal between 1886-1994. Some of these were ‘gay’ spaces in the sense that they supported (mostly) secretive communities of homosexuals, for instance in bars like Mandy’s, Champions, The Factory, The Skyline; sex clubs like the London Health Club; cruising and cottaging spots like Zoo Lake, Joubert Park, the Rose Gardens and Park Station public toilets; and neighbourhoods like Forrest Town and Hillbrow. There are other spaces which I aim to catalogue, and these are queer in other, sometimes less ‘gay’, ways. Here I’m interested in the pool – public and private. From the sexually charged men’s change-rooms at the Summit Club pool in Hillbrow, to an attempt at the archaeology of the ‘kidney-shaped’ domestic pool, I attempt swimming as a kind of flâneurie.

  • The Unknown Freud Talk Given by Robert L. Lippman to the Humanist Society of Metro Louisville on May 4, 2017
1 The Unknown Freud Talk given by Robert L. Lippman to the Humanist Society of Metro Louisville on May 4, 2017. This evening I am going to present a picture of Sigmund Freud --one radically different from the various portrayals of the father of psychoanalysis you may have read or heard. In his 1958 essay, "Psychoanalysis--Science or Party Line?," Erich Fromm asserts: unconsciously [Sigmund Freud] ... wanted to be ... one of the great cultural-ethical leaders of the twentieth century. He wanted to conquer the world ... and to lead man to the only--and very limited--salvation he was capable of: the conquest of passion by intellect. To Freud, this--not any religion or any political solution like socialism--was the only valid answer to the problem of man. [In Fromm, E. (1963). The Dogma of Christ; New York: Holt, Rhinehart and Winston] Freud, however, eludes Fromm. The following paraphrase conveys my radically different reading of Freud: 2 consciously [not unconsciously].Freud ] wanted to conquer the world and to lead man to the only--and very limited--salvation he was capable of: the conquest of passion by intellect. To Freud, this was the only valid answer to the Jewish problem. In other words, Freud, like the founder of modern Zionism Theodor Herzl, was bent on delivering his people from anti-Semitism—but unlike Herzl, Freud did not broadcast his messianic ambition. Whereas Herzl's Promised Land was a sovereign Jewish State [realized: Israel], Freud’s Promised Land was an enlightened secular world grounded in reason, a brotherly world in which the seed of Abraham can move freely over frontiers.

The Free-Mover Clinical Clerkship Period is an optional part of the medical course and as such must be accounted for. Students not willing to participate still have to attend clinical rotations at the University of Milan. The Clerkship abroad represents a mutual contract between Supervisor and Student and is subject to supervision by the Faculty. This study explores various types of secondary education that are categorised under one of two generic terms - Jewish secondary education or secondary education for Jews. The former describes institutions, offered by individual Jews, which provided a blend of religious and/or secular education. The latter focuses on non-Jewish schools which accepted Jews (and some which did not but were, nevertheless, attended by Jews). Whilst this work emphasises London and its environs, other areas of Jewish residence, both major and minor, are also investigated.

  • Abstract in the First Years of the Twentieth Century, an Anti-Semitic Document Appeared in Russia That Profoundly Shaped The
Abstract In the first years of the twentieth century, an anti-Semitic document appeared in Russia that profoundly shaped the course of the entire century. Despite being quickly discredited as a plagiarized forgery, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion spread across the world, being translated into dozens of languages and utilized as hateful rhetoric by leaders of many religions and nationalities. While the effects of the document were felt internationally, the Protocols also helped to reshape centuries old prejudices about Jews in a country still in its infancy, Germany. This “hoax of the twentieth century” helped to redefine age-old anti- Semitic values firmly ingrained within German society, and helped Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party justify committing the landmark genocide of world history, the Holocaust. Utilizing a variety of sources, particularly the actual text of the Protocols and the writings of Adolf Hitler, this examination argues that Hitler and his cabinet became progressively more radicalized towards extermination of the Jews due to their belief in the Jewish world conspiracy outlined within the Protocols. 1 Introduction: Jews in Europe “The weapons in our hands are limitless ambitions, burning greediness, merciless vengeance, hatreds, and malace.”1 This phrase is attributed to a collection of omnipotent Jews supposedly bent on world domination. Collectively called the “Elders of Zion,” this group outlined how it will accomplish its goals of global supremacy in a forged book titled The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. The weapons these Elders claimed to hold were substantial: they asserted control over all aspects of the media and world-banking systems, and maintained their agents had already infiltrated international governments.

GENERAL A/HRC/S-9/NGO/3 8 January 2009 ENGLISH ONLY HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL Ninth special session Written statement* submitted by the Association for World Education (AWE), a non-governmental organizations on the Roster The Secretary-General has received the following written statement which is circulated in accordance with Economic and Social Council resolution 1996/31. [7 January 2009] * This written statement is issued, unedited, in the language received from the submitting non- governmental organization. GE.09-10131 A/HRC/S-9/NGO/3 page 2 1. We call for a humanitarian break-through in Gaza and the continuation of constructive negotiations between the Israeli Government (current and future) and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas – and like-minded Palestinian political leaders: The aim should be a two-state solution, acceptable to both sides and guaranteeing peaceful coexistence and mutual recognition between the two peoples – with human dignity recognised for all. 2. Negotiations between the authorities of Israel and Hamas are made more difficult by the refusal of each to consider the other as legitimate. This difficulty was made evident by the EU and French mediation efforts on 4-6 January 2009. The mediators had to appeal to other intermediaries, whether Syrians, Turks or Egyptians, to undertake discussions with Hamas. Such mutual non-recognition of the legitimacy of each prevents the necessary face-to-face negotiations to cease the current fighting and strive for a peace solution. Hamas considers “the land of Palestine is an Islamic waqf, consecrated for future Muslim generations until Judgment Day.” (Article 11) – and, therefore, Israel will never be a legitimate State and cannot be recognised by Hamas.
