DR-TB has been identified in patients in Western Province, although there has been limited study outside the provincial capital of Daru. -

Submission No. 7 (Pacific Health) if Submission to the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Health and Ageing on Western Province Torres Strait: Cross Border Health Issues PURPOSE To propose a long term systemic approach to addressing health issues in Western province to reduce risks and impacts of cross border health issues on the health and well-being of Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal people of the Torres Strait region. KEY POINTS The major health risks in the border area include: » Tuberculosis, including multi-drug resistant TB; • Sexually transmitted infections and HIV and AIDS; « Vector borne disease including malaria, Japanese Encephalitis and Dengue; • Immunisable diseases; and, • Avian Influenza. There is no short term "quick fix" for the health services in Western Province. A long term perspective must be taken. The level of resources to control the health issues of concern cannot be underestimated and will require a "whole of system" approach. Specifically the major challenges are: • There is no stable well functioning health centre in the Treaty Area and difficulties remain in retaining health staff in these areas; • TB is a growing problem and no major program of activity is schedule till 2010. Multi-drug resistant TB is an emerging problem in this area; « Malaria Bed Net Distribution Programs have stalled; • There are high reported rates of STIs and HIV and limited control programs; • The PNG government drugs and supply program does not ensure deliveries of essential drugs to the province; • There is no -

Client Education—Snake Safety Tips Prevent Problems with Large Boas & Pythons ! According to the Humane Society of the United States,17 deaths and many more injuries have been related to large constrictors since 1978. Given the tens of thousands of large constrictors sold, the incidence of fatalities and injuries is relatively low, however every incident—including the death of four babies in their cribs and three additional children— is particularly tragic since such cases are completely preventable. So called “giant snakes” regularly exceed 8 feet (2.4 m) in length, potentially making them difficult or even unsafe to handle. Large constrictor species include the green anaconda (Eunectes murinus), Indian python (Python molurus), African rock python (Python sebae), amethystine python (Morelia amethistina), reticulated python (Python reticulatus), and Burmese python (Python molurus bivittatus). Only the latter two species, reticulated and Burmese pythons, are regularly found in the pet trade, however these species can exceed 20 feet (6.1 m) and are not recommended for casual hobbyists. Juni 2008 Contributions to a review of the Dendrelaphis pictus (GMELIN, 1789) complex – 2. the eastern forms (Serpentes: Colubridae) Beiträge zu einer Revision des Dendrelaphis pictus (GMELIN, 1789) Komplexes – 2. die östlichen Formen (Serpentes: Colubridae) GERNOT VOGEL & JOHAN VAN ROOIJEN KURZFASSUNG Die südostasiatischen, indonesischen und philippinischen Formen der polytypischen Art Dendrelaphis pic- tus (GMELIN, 1789) werden mit Hilfe der Multivariationsanalyse untersucht. Mehrere phänetisch unterschiedliche Cluster sind erkennbar. Geografisch werden diese Cluster durch wichtige biogeographische Barrieren wie zum Beispiel der Isthmus von Kra, die Wallace Linie und die Weber Linie getrennt. Die indochinesischen und die Sunda-Populationen werden trotz morphologischer Unterschiede zwischen ihnen unter dem Namen D. pictus zusammengefaßt, da sie als nicht voneinander unabhängig betrachtet werden. Zwei weitere Cluster werden als eigenständige Arten betrachtet, da diese Populationen ohne Zweifel unabhängige evolutionäre Linien bilden. Der erste dieser Cluster umfaßt die Populationen der Philippinen und Sulawesis. Diese Populationen werden unter dem Namen D. marenae beschrieben. Diese Art unterscheidet sich von den bisher benannten Formen in der Färbung, der Größe der Vertebralschuppen, der Anzahl der Subcaudalia und der Schwanzlänge. Der zweite Cluster umfaßt die Populationen der Molukken, welche mit dem Namen D. grismeri belegt werden. Diese Art zeichnet sich durch die Anzahl der Ventralia, Subcaudalia und Temporalia sowie die Schwanzlänge aus. ABSTRACT The Southeast Asian, Indonesian and Philippine forms of the polytypic Dendrelaphis pictus (GMELIN, 1789) are reviewed using multivariate analyses. Several distinct phenetic clusters are discerned. Geographically, these clusters are separated by important biogeographic boundaries, such as the Isthmus of Kra, Wallace’s line and Weber’s line. -

Papua New Guinea Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Health Situation Report #65 22 March 2021 Period of report: 15 - 21 March 2021 This Situation Report is jointly issued by PNG National Department of Health and World Health Organization once weekly. This Report is not comprehensive and covers information received as of reporting date. Situation Summary and Highlights ❒ As of 21 March 2021 (12:00 pm), there have been 3574 COVID-19 cases and 36 COVID-19 deaths reported in Papua New Guinea. From the period of 15 to 21 March, there were 1305 newly reported cases including 15 new deaths. This is the seventh consecutive week of increasing cases, and more than double the previous highest number of cases reported in a single week in PNG. ❒ The total number of provinces that have reported COVID-19 cases to date is twenty. Only Manus and Oro (Northern) Provinces have not reported cases to date. ❒ Public Health Unit at Doherty Institute in Australia has conducted whole genome sequencing on positive test samples sent from PNG and no variants of concern have been identified in sequencing conducted to date. ❒ The COVID-19 Hotline has experienced a 33.83% increase in calls since the last fortnight and the rate of health-related calls being referred to the Rapid Response Teams and PHAs has also increased by 33% from the prior week. ❒ This week the Australian government will deploy an Australian Medical Assistance Team (AUSMAT) to undertake assessments and Please note: Due to data cleaning, the number of critical planning for a potential full deployment cases may not add up exactly from last week. -

Virology Journal (2020) 17:6 https://doi.org/10.1186/s12985-020-1279-5 RESEARCH Open Access Investigations into the presence of nidoviruses in pythons Silvia Blahak1, Maria Jenckel2,3, Dirk Höper2, Martin Beer2, Bernd Hoffmann2 and Kore Schlottau2* Abstract Background: Pneumonia and stomatitis represent severe and often fatal diseases in different captive snakes. Apart from bacterial infections, paramyxo-, adeno-, reo- and arenaviruses cause these diseases. In 2014, new viruses emerged as the cause of pneumonia in pythons. In a few publications, nidoviruses have been reported in association with pneumonia in ball pythons and a tiger python. The viruses were found using new sequencing methods from the organ tissue of dead animals. Methods: Severe pneumonia and stomatitis resulted in a high mortality rate in a captive breeding collection of green tree pythons. Unbiased deep sequencing lead to the detection of nidoviral sequences. A developed RT-qPCR was used to confirm the metagenome results and to determine the importance of this virus. A total of 1554 different boid snakes, including animals suffering from respiratory diseases as well as healthy controls, were screened for nidoviruses. Furthermore, in addition to two full-length sequences, partial sequences were generated from different snake species. Results: The assembled full-length snake nidovirus genomes share only an overall genome sequence identity of less than 66.9% to other published snake nidoviruses and new partial sequences vary between 99.89 and 79.4%. Highest viral loads were detected in lung samples. The snake nidovirus was not only present in diseased animals, but also in snakes showing no typical clinical signs.
