Aluminium has properties that are favourable for structural engineering, including good strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance and machinability. It can be easily recycled saving energy used in smelting as compared to steel. Its alloys can have ultimate tensile strength of up to 750 MPa, which is comparable to steel. -

It’s technically a rolling hammer—two steel drums A that can form sheetmetal into complex curves. In the wrong hands, an English wheel can turn a flat piece of alloy into sine-waved trash. In the right ones, it can make the fender of a Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa in a few hours. Or just about anything else you can build from curved metal. Legend holds that the first wheeling machines appeared in medieval France. They supplanted part of traditional blacksmithing, where men used mallets and shot bags to pound out flat armor or coachwork. The American name came in the 20th century, when the tool pollinated here from English panelbeaters. It had a brief affair with mass production, but the machine’s flexibility and skill demand made it perfect for low-volume work. Wheels helped birth early grand-prix cars, Bonneville record setters, most of Europe’s classic sports racers, and many of history’s great aircraft. Versions still shape NASCAR bodies and new Morgans, and they’re the backbone of countless custom and restoration shops. Luo a,b,* a Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH, USA b Department of Integrated Systems Engineering, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH, USA Abstract This paper summarizes the melting and casting processes for magnesium alloys. It also reviews the historical development of magnesium castings and their structural uses in the western world since 1921 when Dow began producing magnesium pistons. Magnesium casting technology was well developed during and after World War II, both in gravity sand and permanent mold casting as well as high-pressure die casting, for aerospace, defense and automotive applications. In the last 20 years, most of the development has been focused on thin-wall die casting ap- plications in the automotive industry, taking advantages of the excellent castability of modern magnesium alloys. Recently, the continued expansion of magnesium casting applications into automotive, defense, aerospace, electronics and power tools has led to the diversification of casting processes into vacuum die casting, low-pressure die casting, squeeze casting, lost foam casting, ablation casting as well as semi-solid casting. This paper will also review the historical, current and potential structural use of magnesium with a focus on automotive applications. The technical challenges of magnesium structural applications are also discussed. Increasing worldwide energy demand, environment protection and government regulations will stimulate more applications of lightweight magnesium castings in the next few decades. -

Roll bonding is an effective and economic processing approach to making clad metals. This dissertation presents an experimental investigation of the roll cladding process as well as thermo-mechanical modeling of mechanism for roll bonding of clad metals. The objectives of this research are to investigate the bonding mechanism of dissimilar metals in a warm rolling process and to advance the knowledge of the roll cladding process. To accomplish the objectives, aluminum 1100 sheet (Al 1100) and stainless steel 304 sheet (SST 304) are bonded by warm rolling under controlled conditions. -

The effect of 4043 filler dilution (i.e. weld metal silicon content) on cracking sensitivity and solidification path of Alloy 6060 welds are investigated. -
