Charbel… 14th Sunday in ordinary Time July 7, 2019 My dear parishioners and friends, “Peace be with you”, On behalf of Bishop Duca, the St. Agnes parish community, priests and Missionaries of Charity are all honored this weekend to welcome Sister Mary Prema Pierick, M.C., current Superior General of the Missionaries of Charity. She will be visiting her sisters for the first time since the last visit of St. Mother Teresa on 1984. The third Mother General, and successor of a great saint of the Church, is from Germany. She decided to follow God’s call in her life and serve the poorest of the poor after she read the biography of the foundress, Something Beautiful for God. After her first meeting with St. Mother Teresa in Berlin, she felt called to join her work and moved to India to join the Missionaries. After her election as Mother General over more than 5,000 sisters she said: “I am very humbled and I can only accept it because it is the will of God for me. I saw it from the first moment that God wanted me to take this task… knowing my own littleness but also God’s greatness”. The congregation of the Missionaries of Charity is present in 139 countries, with more than 5,300 sisters who carry the congregation goal: to satiate the thirst of Jesus on the Cross for souls. This is an incredible moment for our parish and we all are excited, sisters, priests and parishioners, friends, co-workers and volunteers, to welcome Sister M. Prema asking the Lord for the grace for a fruitful visit to our parish and to the community of our Missionaries of Charity as well. The Missionaries of Charity of Baton Rouge, invite you to share with the community the happiness of the visit with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist on July 7th at 11:00 am, celebrated by Bishop Emeritus Robert Muench. After Mass, and before the reception in the cafeteria, Bishop Muench, together with Mother General, will unveil the statue of St Mother Teresa donated by Mr. and Mrs. Tim Sistrunk. The statue and plaza prepared for St Mother Teresa will then be blessed by the Bishop. The plaza, in honor of St. Mother Teresa, is located outside the Sister’s building just before the Cafeteria. In the area there are a lot of families counting on this centre to give their children a better present. On September 4th, 2016 Pope Francis will proclaim saint a tiny nun from Albania, born in 1910 and passed away 87 years later: Mother Teresa. Just saying her name recalls immediately her minute figure, wrapped up in a white and blue sari, always with a smile on her wrinkled face. Having her name associated with the city of Calcutta (from 2001 officially known as Kolkata) is more difficult for many: it’s the place where Mother Teresa lived and worked most of her life, serving the poorest among the poorest surrounded by extreme indigence and its related violence, decay and enormous suffering. It was that immense poverty to push Mother Teresa to move to Calcutta right after completing her novitiate and her nurse education in the North Bengal. She never left Calcutta since then. Here she started to look after and cure the sick persons she was finding on the roads, founding later the order of the Missionaries of Charity and a huge number of homeless centres, hospitals and clinics dedicated to people affected by leprosy. In many occasions Mother Teresa found herself involved in controversies, but her tireless missionary activity gained more and more credibility as time went by. She also started to be supported from personalities like Lady Diana Spencer, and in 1979 she received the Nobel Peace Prize.

    Episode 3: Mother ERIKA LANTZ: Mother Teresa was always traveling. Flying here. Flying there. I tend to think of her as living a spartan life, but, of course, she took planes like anyone else. Mary Johnson remembers this one time in particular: The two of them flew from Rome to Sweden. Mary was Mother’s traveling companion and assistant for the trip. MARY JOHNSON: We were going there for an ecumenical conference where Mother was going to be honored and was going to give a talk. ERIKA: They boarded the plane in their blue and white saris. Mary also packed two heavy boxes of “Miraculous Medals” -- these small religious tokens that Mother Teresa would kiss and hand out to people. Mary and Mother Teresa settled into their seats in first class. They’d booked economy, but Mary says airlines always upgraded the tickets. MARY: They're trying to avoid all that commotion that would happen if people knew Mother Teresa was on the plane. ERIKA: Mary says Mother Teresa pulled on the sleeve of one of the flight attendants and said: MARY: “All that extra food, you know, that people aren't eating, that you're going to have to throw away anyway -- could you give it to me, and I will use it for the poor?” ERIKA: The flight attendant looked hesitant, awkward. She explained they had to throw the food waste away; it was against the rules to keep it. MARY: And she said, “Oh no, just tell them Mother Teresa needs it for the poor. They won't make any fuss for you.” And anyway, long story short, eventually she went around with a big, black trash bag collecting things from people, and, of course, that's how people came to know that Mother Teresa was on the plane, and then they all started to come one by one and standing next and Mother would sign things for them and kiss the medal and give it to them and pray with them and all the rest of it.

We celebrate the Teachers’ Day on the birth anniversary of Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (5 September 1888 – 17 April 1975) was an Indian philosopher, academic, and statesman who served as the first Vice President of India (1952–1962) and the second President of India (1962–1967). He served as the professor of philosophy at Mysore(1918-21) and Calcutta(1937-41) universities. He was the first Indian to hold a professorial chair at the University of Oxford. His philosophy was grounded in Advaita Vedanta, reinterpreting this tradition for a contemporary understanding. He was awarded several high awards during his life, including a knighthood in 1931, the Bharat Ratna in 1954, and honorary membership of the British Royal Order of Merit in 1963. He was also one of the founders of HelpAge India, a non-profit organisation for elderly underprivileged in India. Sarvepalli believed that "teachers should be the best minds in the country". Since 1962, his birthday has been celebrated in India as Teachers' Day on 5 September every year.     Missionaries of Charity embrace the poor and sick On a sweltering August morning, Matthew Walinsky leaves the sanctuary of the AIDS hospice at St. Wenceslaus, Baltimore, where he resides, to volunteer around the corner at the Missionaries of Charity summer Bible camp. Though he appears robust, the 50-year-old former altar boy from St. Jane Frances de Chantal, Pasadena, suffers from a host of AIDS-related health problems that make the vigorous unpaid volunteer sessions a taxing labor of love. “The sisters have been so good to me and have set such a great example of the amount of work we can all do if we have the will, that I’m more than happy to help out,” said Mr. Walinsky, referring to the six Missionaries of Charity who run several free programs in the community. The Missionaries of Charity, a religious order for Catholic women founded in 1950 by Mother Teresa in Calcutta, are grateful for the presence of volunteers like Mr. Walinski at their three-week camp for about 60 children who live in a low-income neighborhood which has experienced a high rate of violent crime in the past several months, according to city crime reports. “These kids are in desperate need of masculine love,” said Jeff Wright, another volunteer at the camp and a St. Wenceslaus parishioner. “Most of them have little – if any – male guidance in their lives and they really crave the attention of the male volunteers at the camp.” The press-shy Missionaries of Charity traditionally doesn’t grant media interviews, because the women shun self-glorification and the sisters never solicit donations for their countless charity programs.

The NBSCCCI is aware that some religious congregations have ministries that involve direct contact with children while others do not. In religious congregations that have direct involvement with children, reviews of child safeguarding have been undertaken by measuring their practice compliance against all seven Church standards. Where a religious congregation no longer has, or never had ministry involving children and has not received any allegation of sexual abuse, the NBSCCCI reviews are conducted using a shorter procedure. The size, age and activity profiles of religious congregations can vary significantly and the NBSCCCI accepts that it is rational that the form of review be tailored to the profile of each Church authority, where the ministry with children is limited or non-existent.
