Having played the instru- ment for, then, almost two decades, I thought that a novelist would not, could not, feature specialty instruments such as the C-melody sax if he did not play the horn himself. Once the saxophone had caught my attention, I noticed all sorts of uncommon references that seemed to confirm my hunch that Thomas Pynchon himself played the instrument: McClintic Sphere’s 4½ reed, the contra- bass sax of Against the Day, Gravity’s Rainbow’s Charlie Parker passage.

Sparklehorseplay Page 1 of 6 Sparklehorse Spring 1999 tour diary part 1 The South Rises Again? This tour diary is entirely the fault of one musician, and is not sanctioned by Sparklehorse Inc. You may believe that the characters are fictitious if you like.... Well, it all starts with a show in San Francisco, Victor Krummenacher and Alison Faith Levy at the Hotel Utah March 6th 1999. I played a couple songs with Alison and then the whole set with Victor, we got back to Victor's at about 3am, so I dozed in a chair 'til 5 when the shuttle came to pick me up to take me to the airport. a short layover in chicago, many people stranded by the weather there, but i got safely to Richmond, VA. where eventually i got picked up by Scott Minor and Mark Linkous in Mark's old diesel Mercedes wagon. out to the farm in Dillwyn to rehearse. on th eway we pick up a new instrument for Mark, a nylon string guitar that he is having a pickup put into. Already at the farm is David Dreiwitz, our new bass player. I met Dave originally may years ago when i was playing with Camper Van Beethoven and he was playing with Tiny Lights, but recently re - met him while doing shows in NY last fall with John Kruth. Dave also plays with Ween. So the band is Mark on guitar and singing and other weird sounds, Scott on drums and sampler, Dave on electric and acoustic bass, me (Jonathan) on guitar, violin, keyboards and glockenspiel, with both Dave and I singing background vocals.

  • Reconstructing Beethoven: Mauricio Kagel's Ludwig
Reconstructing Beethoven: Mauricio Kagel’s Ludwig van by Nikos Stavlas A Thesis submitted for the Degree of PhD in Music (Performance Pathway) Department of Music Goldsmiths, University of London June 2012 1 I, Nikos Stavlas, hereby declare that this thesis and the work presented in it is entirely my own. Where I have consulted the work of others, this is always clearly stated. Signed: Date: 2 Abstract The subject of this dissertation is Ludwig van , Mauricio Kagel’s tribute to Beethoven on the occasion of the 200 th anniversary of the latter’s birth, which consists of three separate, but closely related, versions: a film, a musical score and a recording. The main aim of this project is to analyse the performance problems that musicians have to face when realising the score Ludwig van , which is an entirely indeterminate collage of Beethoven’s music, and to suggest ways of tackling them. For this purpose, all three versions of the work are studied in this thesis. The film is examined in terms of the issues it raises concerning Beethoven’s reception and of the function of its music, which consists of unusual performances of Beethoven’s works. The score is analysed from the perspective of postmodern theory and 20 th -century art movements, while the roles of the composer and the performer are discussed and redefined. The recording is studied as a sample of how Kagel himself chose to realise his own score. Finally, the difficulties I encountered in my own attempts to realise Ludwig van are discussed, and the ways in which I dealt with them are presented.

  • Rolling Stone “Good Evening Obscurity” [Jonathan Perry]
Rolling Stone : Good Evening Obscurity Page 1 of 3 Good Evening Obscurity Pain and death fuel Sparklehorse's inspired, rustic rock Posted Feb 10, 1999 12:00 AM The first thing Sparklehorse songwriter Mark Linkous wanted to do after he died was ride one of the four motorcycles he keeps at his farm in rural Andersonville, Virginia. Well, that's not exactly true. The *first* thing he wanted to do after he died was to learn how to live again, and (here's the really scary part) to see if he could still write a song. "For awhile there," Linkous says, "I was really scared that when I technically died -- which I guess I did for a few minutes -- that the part of my brain that allowed me my ability to write songs would be damaged." In 1996, an overdose of Valium and anti-depressants in a London hotel room very nearly cut short Linkous' career before it had really even begun. Sparklehorse had been finishing up a European tour in support of its debut, Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot , when Linkous keeled over in his hotel room. It was fourteen hours before the singer was discovered unconscious, his legs pinned underneath him with their circulation cut off. When medics attempted to straighten his legs, the procedure triggered a heart attack. A three-month stay at St. Mary's hospital in London and no less than seven operations were required to save Linkous' legs, which doctors initially told him would have to be amputated. Even so, the singer says he was in a morphine-medicated state for two years after the accident.
