  • Storytelling in the Secondary English Classroom
STORYTELLING IN THE SECONDARY ENGLISH CLASSROOM: theoretical and empirical perspectives relevant to the development ofliteracy Thesis submitted for the degree of Ph. D. in Education, by Jean Ferguson Dunning. May, 1999 The Institute ofEducation University ofLondon, 20, Bedford Way, London, wciu OAL 1 I should like to express my warmest thanks to Harold Rosen, Professor Emeritus ofthe Institute of Education, London University, who helped me to launch the study which is the subject of this thesis and, most particularly, to my supervisor, Margaret Spencer, Reader in Education at the Institute of Education, whose example, enthusiasm and unfailing support have inspired me throughout the long process ofwriting. 2 ABSTRACT This thesis argues that oral storytelling by pupils in the secondary English classroom has a potential neglected by teachers and the education system in Britain. Part One considers the history of traditions ofstorytelling from pre-literate times, through the development of communication technologies, the increase in the numbers of readers in the population and the development of schooled literacy, foregrounding oral continuities. It traces the development ofthe traditional concept of literacy as a neutral technology of the intellect, arguing against the notion of an oral-literate divide. It supports a revised conceptualisation oforal-literate relations which accepts that, in any society, there are multiple literacies. From a developmental perspective, it insists on the centrality of oral narrative discourse to the individual's thinking and sense of social identity. Finally, it reviews narratological theories and shows that the application of some of them to the transcripts oforal stories can reveal the literary competences of tellers.

Student Creativity English Literary Works Alternative ending to the Golden Fish The Golden Fish by Carissa Anggana 1H The next day, the fisherman set off to the lake and caught the shiny golden fish again. He did what his rich wife said but the magical golden fish said, “I will not give you anymore wishes but I know how to make your old wife happier.” “Ok,” said the kind fisherman. “Your wife must give her stuff to the poor,” said the golden fish. Then, the fisherman set the fish free and went home thinking about what the golden fish said. The next day, the fisherman wanted to try what the golden fish said. Whenever his wife was going somewhere, he had a chance to sneakily get something. Then, he gave the stuff to the poor. A few hours later, his wife returned home without realizing her stuff went missing. The following day, some people came to their house. They all looked happy and thanked her for her kindness. The wife was confused so she asked her husband, “Why are these people so happy? The fisherman smiled and said, “I gave your stuff to them because I know they need it more than we do.” Finally, what the golden fish said was true. His wife became happier. They still had money and they lived happily ever after. The Golden Fish Carissa Anggana Grade 1 Humiity The Kite by Marianne Dharmadi One day, there was a boy named Sam. He was playing with his kite. • The Dean Hotel —
The Dean Hotel — This Is Providence The sweat and vision of Providence people help to define the true meaning of a luxurious hotel On April 3, 2014, a sunny but brisk Thursday in the early evening, a large, cheerful and impeccably dressed crowd stood in front of 122 Fountain Street in Providence, an address drenched in history of a somewhat sticky nature. No longer a place to walk past quickly with your head down if you found yourself alone after dark, the hungrily anticipated Dean Hotel had come to fruition and citizens gathered excitedly like new parents leaning over a crib to find out what color eyes their baby would have.
