Bobby Hutcherson, Vibraphonist With Coloristic Range of Soun... http://www.nytimes.com/2016/08/17/arts/music/bobby-hutchers... http://nyti.ms/2bdO8F9 MUSIC Bobby Hutcherson, Vibraphonist With Coloristic Range of Sound, Dies at 75 By NATE CHINEN AUG. 16, 2016 Bobby Hutcherson, one of the most admired and accomplished vibraphonists in jazz, died on Monday at his home in Montara, Calif. He was 75. Marshall Lamm, a spokesman for Mr. Hutcherson’s family, confirmed the death, saying Mr. Hutcherson had long been treated for emphysema. Mr. Hutcherson’s career took flight in the early 1960s, as jazz was slipping free of the complex harmonic and rhythmic designs of bebop. He was fluent in that language, but he was also one of the first to adapt his instrument to a freer postbop language, often playing chords with a pair of mallets in each hand. He released more than 40 albums and appeared on many more, including some regarded as classics, like “Out to Lunch,” by the alto saxophonist, flutist and bass clarinetist Eric Dolphy, and “Mode for Joe,” by the tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson. Both of those albums were a byproduct of Mr. Hutcherson’s close affiliation with Blue Note Records, from 1963 to 1977. He was part of a wave of young artists who defined the label’s forays into experimentalism, including the pianist Andrew Hill and the alto saxophonist Jackie McLean. But he also worked with hard-bop stalwarts like the tenor saxophonist Dexter Gordon, and he later delved into jazz-funk and Afro-Latin grooves. Mr. Hutcherson had a clear, ringing sound, but his style was luminescent and 1 of 4 8/17/16, 2:43 PM Bobby Hutcherson, Vibraphonist With Coloristic Range of Soun..

  • 2006 TRASH Regionals Round 07 Tossups
2006 TRASH Regionals Round 07 Tossups 1. It appears twice in the e.e. cummings poem “little ladies more”. It also appears in the Tennessee Williams play A Streetcar Named Desire when Blanche DuBois asks it of Mitch. Seemingly awkward because of its use of the formal pronoun, it means, “Do you want to sleep with me (tonight)?” For ten points, give this phrase re-introduced to a new generation by Mya, Lil’ Kim, Pink, and Christina Aguilera in their 2001 version of “Lady Marmalade”. Answer: Voulez-vous coucher avec moi (ce soir)? 2. In Need for Speed: Most Wanted it’s called “Speed Breaker”, and is most often used to dodge roadblocks. In GUN, it’s called “Quick Draw.” The earliest example of it is probably in the 1980 Epyx game Rescue at Rigel. In Star Wars: Jedi Academy, you can get it using “Force Speed,” by killing Reborn Jedis, or typing the cheat code “there is no spoon.” For ten points, give the common name for the ability in video games to move at normal speed while the rest of the game is slowed down, most famously used in the Max Payne and, predictably, Matrix videogames. Answer: bullet time (Prompt on “slow motion” or equivalents. Note for itinerant cheaters: the cheat code is really “thereisnospoon”) 3. His favorite movie may be Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, while he cried a lot when he paid to see Godfather III. His first name may be Marion, but his full name has also been reported to be William Williams.

It’s easy to stay home, waiting for spring and baseball and New York@Night promising to go out once it gets warm. 4 But now is not the time for complacency. There are countless musicians in our fair city that need your support, especially when lethargy seems so appealing. To Interview: Ron McClure quote our Megaphone this month, written by pianist Steve Colson, music is meant 6 by Donald Elfman to help people “reclaim their intellectual and emotional lives.” And that is not hard to do in a city like New York, which even in the dead of winter, gives jazz Artist Feature: Harris Eisenstadt lovers so many choices. Where else can you stroll into the Village Vanguard 7 by Clifford Allen (Happy 75th Anniversary!) every Monday and hear a band with as much history as the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra (On the Cover). Or see as well-traveled a bassist as On The Cover: Vanguard Jazz Orchestra Ron McClure (Interview) take part in the reunion of the legendary Lookout Farm 9 by George Kanzler quartet at Birdland? How about supporting those young, vibrant artists like Encore: Lest We Forget: drummer Harris Eisenstadt (Artist Feature) whose bands and music keep jazz relevant and exciting? 10 Svend Asmussen Joe Maneri In addition to the above, this month includes a Lest We Forget on the late by Ken Dryden by Clifford Allen saxophonist Joe Maneri, honored this month with a tribute concert at the Irondale Center in Brooklyn.

Transcript -- Sylvia Rosen Baumgarten, ’55 Narrator: Sylvia Rosen Baumgarten Interviewer: Mimi Pichey Interview Date: July 6, 1988 Interview Time: Location: New York City Length: 6 audio files; 275:12 Track 1 Mimi Pichey: [00:00] -- We’re going to give this thing a try and see if the tape is actually recording. This is Mimi Pichey, Brown Class of 1972 interviewing Sylvia Baumgarten. Do you go by your last name of -- or you go by Baumgarten? Sylvia Rosen Baumgarten. Brown Class of ’55, in her home in New York City on East 12th Street. The date is July 6, 1988. Well, why don’t we start off by asking you when you -- why you decided to attend Brown? Sylvia Rosen Baumgarten: Well, as I think we were discussing before, my generation of women was relatively mindless; we did what we were told. And [00:01:00] my father being a strong father announced to me in I believe about March of my senior year in high school, “You will apply to,” and then he listed Radcliffe and Wellesley and Smith and Bryn Mawr -- 14 schools in all he listed that I was to apply to, and I said, “OK, Daddy,” and did so. Got 14 -- no, excuse me, 13 yeses. The one I really wanted was Wellesley and Wellesley put me on the waiting list. I got 13 yeses qualified, except for Pembroke. They all depended upon what we called then the afternoon boards, which I guess is the achievement tests. We had taken the morning, boards, which was the English and math and then you had to take the afternoon boards which were your achievement tests and they said you are in pending the taking [00:02:00] of the afternoon boards.
