Further detail 1. Sports tournament – Parliament square is in the centre of very busy roads and Trafalgar Square is surrounded on three sides by busy roads. The GLA cannot accommodate a full sports match because of the safety issues. They also conflict with the byelaws and impact public access around the square. We can accommodate sports activations as a low-key press call. 2. Westminster’s Conservation Areas - Character Overview Westminster has 56 designated conservation areas which cover over 76% of the City. These cover a diverse range of townscapes from all periods of the City’s development and their distinctive character reflects Westminster’s differing roles at the heart of national life and government, as a business and commercial centre, and as home to diverse residential communities. A significant number are more residential areas often dominated by Georgian and Victorian terraced housing but there are also conservation areas which are focused on enclaves of later housing development, including innovative post-war housing estates. Some of the conservation areas in south Westminster are dominated by government and institutional uses and in mixed central areas such as Soho and Marylebone, it is the historic layout and the dense urban character combined with the mix of uses which creates distinctive local character. Despite its dense urban character, however, more than a third of the City is open space and our Royal Parks are also designated conservation areas. Many of Westminster’s conservation areas have a high proportion of listed buildings and some contain townscape of more than local significance. Below provides a brief summary overview of the character of each of these areas and their designation dates. The conservation area audits and other documentation listed should be referred to for more detail on individual areas. 1. Adelphi The Adelphi takes its name from the 18th Century development of residential terraces by the Adam brothers and is located immediately to the south of the Strand. The southern boundary of the conservation area is the former shoreline of the Thames. -

At the same time, other areas in the visual display are often 6 overlooked. Thus, a designer should carefully consider drawing viewers’ attention to important 7 information and reducing viewers’ attentional load on unimportant information. 8 Web designers recently tend to present all the information on a long page, and the 9 viewers need to scroll down to see different blocks of information. This new trend is probably 10 due to frequent mobile device use in our daily life, and we become more familiar with scrolling. 11 A critical piece of information on this type of webpage is to notify people to scroll down. 12 Otherwise, this design would be a complete failure. To successfully deliver this message, 13 designers can use preattentive features, such as motion, to draw people’s attention. For example, 14 on Google Drive’s webpage, the down arrow at the bottom of page informs people to scroll 15 down. Although the color makes the down arrow to stand out from the background, the 16 additional movement of the arrow is the key factor that draws people’s attention. Thus, dynamic 17 arrows can be useful to draw people’s attention to scroll down. 18 If a webpage is filled with dynamic objects, it will create competition between 19 information. To avoid this issue, other methods should be used to draw viewers’ attention. -

I am aware that I lay myself open to the charge of being a high‐brow, a charge that creates no reactionary emotion at all, especially as it comes usually from the low‐brow, and that I may be thrown out of society into a lower stratum, when I state that for the text of this report I have turned to a gentleman whose mortal life spanned the years between 1672 and 1719. Even the low‐brow has probably heard or read the name Joseph Addison, though it may convey nothing to him except the fact that it has an English and not a foreign sound. -

P FACE TO FACE Gallery News Issue no. 6 Autumn 2003 Writing in this issue: Julian Fellowes, Bruce Oldfield and Gerald Scarfe FROM THE DIRECTOR The autumn exhibition Below Stairs: 400 Years of Servants’ Portraits offers an unusual opportunity to see fascinating images of those who usually remain invisible. The exhibition offers intriguing stories of the particular individuals at the centre of great houses, colleges or business institutions and reveals the admiration and affection that caused the commissioning of a portrait or photograph. We are also celebrating the completion of the new scheme for Trafalgar Square with the young people’s education project and exhibition, Circling the Square, which features photographs that record the moments when the Square has acted as a touchstone in history – politicians, activists, philosophers and film stars have all been photographed in the Square. Photographic portraits also feature in the DJs display in the Bookshop Gallery, the Terry O’Neill display in the Balcony Gallery and the Schweppes Photographic Portrait Prize launched in November in the Porter Gallery. Gerald Scarfe’s rather particular view of the men and women selected for the Portrait Gallery is published at the end of September. Heroes & Villains, is a light hearted and occasionally outrageous view of those who have made history, from Elizabeth I and Oliver Cromwell to Delia Smith and George Best. The Gallery is very grateful for the support of all of its Patrons and Members – please do encourage others to become Members and enjoy an association with us, or consider becoming a Patron, giving significant extra help to the Gallery’s work and joining a special circle of supporters. -
