ST. AUGUSTINE AND THE DOCTRINE OF THE MYSTICAL BODY OF CHRIST STANISLAUS J. GRABOWSKI, S.T.D., S.T.M. Catholic University of America N THE present article a study will be made of Saint Augustine's doc I trine of the Mystical Body of Christ. This subject is, as it will be later pointed out, timely and fruitful. It is of unutterable importance for the proper and full conception of the Church. This study may be conveniently divided into four parts: (I) A fuller consideration of the doctrine of the Mystical Body of Christ, as it is found in the works of the great Bishop of Hippo; (II) a brief study of that same doctrine, as it is found in the sources which the Saint utilized; (III) a scrutiny of the place that this doctrine holds in the whole system of his religious thought and of some of its peculiarities; (IV) some consideration of the influence that Saint Augustine exercised on the development of this particular doctrine in theologians and doctrinal systems. THE DOCTRINE St. Augustine gives utterance in many passages, as the occasion de mands, to words, expressions, and sentences from which we are able to infer that the Church of his time was a Church of sacramental rites and a hierarchical order. Further, writing especially against Donatism, he is led Xo portray the Church concretely in its historical, geographical, visible form, characterized by manifest traits through which she may be recognized and discerned from false chuiches. The aspect, however, of the concept of the Church which he cherished most fondly and which he never seems tired of teaching, repeating, emphasizing, and expound ing to his listeners is the Church considered as the Body of Christ.1 1 On St. -

REFORMATION VIEWS OF COMMUNION John 6:47-59 INTRODUCTION I am calling the month of October at Corntassel “Reformation Month.” Actually October 31st is Reformation Day, since it is on this day in 1517 that Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to Wittenberg church door to debate the issue of penance and indulgences. Many count this event is what gave birth to the Protestant Reformation. Usually the Sunday closest to October 31 is called “Reformation Sunday.” But since this year is the 500th year anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, I’m going to call October “Reformation Month.” One thing we will be doing to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation is that I will be preaching on the 5 Solas of the Reformation. Since today is also World Communion Sunday I will be preaching on the Reformation View of the Lord’s Supper. THE TRANSUBSTANTIATON VIEW The Lord’s Supper was one of the key focuses of the Reformation. The Reformers believed that the Church of their day had totally distorted the meaning of it. In short, the Catholic view is that the elements, the bread and the cup, are miraculously changed into the actual Body and Blood of Christ through the priest’s blessing. Since the elements become the literal Body and Blood of Christ they can be elevated, revered and even worshipped for they are the actual Body and Blood of Christ. This is called the “Transubstantiation View.” The Protestants believed that this was a form of idolatry and close to being magical incantations which led to many superstitions. -

SYNOPSIS Considered the greatest exponent of the particular way of making musical films of Carlos Saura, Flamenco, flamenco arises, through a journey of light and life, the evolution of the songs, dances and music of this art that, in the director own words, would be heritage of the universe. With the experience and knowledge that Carlos Saura’s films have gained over time, we enter in the roads of the existing talents of this art so alive and dynamic that flamenco is it, to present his new film which uses innovative elements, in the technical field as in the narrative, becoming a unique production. The film shows that there is a powerful new flamenco, of young talents finding their way in our country and beyond our borders, but the reality of this art can not be reflected in the right way without some of the great living masters that we are fortunate to have in Spain. 02. DIRECTOR’S NOTES Carlos Saura It is always difficult to write about the ideas that lead me to create my musical films. It is difficult because the actual scripts I use are barely three or four pages long, where the different dances that have been chosen are in order, with the artist’s name and the space in which the dance might develop. It is even more difficult because part of the stimulus, the fun that always comes with the filming is based – let's face it – on the possibility of improvising in this type of cinema. -

The French word renaissance is translated as “rebirth” and is described by many as one of the most significant intellectual movements of our history. Whereas the Baroque period is described by many as a time of intense drama, tension, exuberance, and grandeur in art. By comparing and contrasting the works made in this period students gain a greater sense of the history of European art and the great minds behind it. Many notable artists, musicians, scientists, and writers emerged from this period that are still relished and discussed today. Artists and great thinkers such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Michaelangelo Meisi da Caravaggio, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, Dante Alighieri, Johann Sebastian Bach, and Galileo Galilei were working in their respective fields creating beautiful and innovative works. Many of these permanent collection works were created in the traditional fashion of egg tempera and oil painting which the students will get an opportunity to try in our studio. -

These galleries mostly show works of art from 1840s France to 1940s Britain. Each gallery has a theme and displays a range of paintings, drawings, sculpture and applied art. Summary: The main subject matter of this research is an appro- ach to Hungary, during the reign of Andrew Il, and its participation in the Fifth Crusade. To achieve such a goal a well supported study of king Andrew's ambitions in the Balkan region as in the Bizantine Empire is depicted. His marriage with a daughter of the Latin Emperor of Constantinople seems to indicate the origin of his pre- tensions. It also explains the support of the Roman Catholic Church to this Crusade, as well as it offers a detailed description of king Andrew's itinerary in Holy Land. -

religions Article Politics of the Blessed Lady: Catholic Art in the Contemporary Hungarian Culture Industry Marc Roscoe Loustau McFarland Center for Religion, Culture and Ethics, College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, MA 02131, USA; [email protected] or [email protected]; Tel.: +1-857-222-6955 Abstract: I examine Hungary’s Catholic arts industry and its material practices of cultural production: the institutions and professional disciplines through which devotional material objects move as they become embedded in political processes of national construction and contestation. Ethnographic data come from thirty-six months of fieldwork in Hungary and Transylvania, and focuses on three museum and gallery exhibitions of Catholic devotional objects. Building on critiques of subjectivity- and embodiment-focused research, I highlight how the institutional legacies of state socialism in Hungary and Romania inform a national politics of Catholic materiality. Hungarian cultural institutions and intellectuals have been drawn to work with Catholic art because Catholic material culture sustains a meaningful presence across multiple scales of political contestation at the local, regional, and state levels. The movement of Catholic ritual objects into the zone of high art and cultural preservation necessitates that these objects be mobilized for use within the political agendas of state-embedded institutions. Yet, this mobilization is not total. Ironies, confusions, and contradictions continue to show up in Transylvanian Hungarians’ historical memory, destabilizing these political uses. Their making usually reflects a determination on the part of the director or star to see the artist as an alter-ego. Many of them were adaptations of successful literary works, which tempted financial backers by having a ready-made audience based on a pre-established reputation.
