Gutierrez 111 Acknowledgments This thesis could not have been possible without the ongoing support of my parents, Laurie and John Biundo, who from an early age provided me with the opportunity to read a seemingly endless supply of books, and the encouragement to keep exploring my own creativity. Several friends have read drafts of these works and helped to shape them to the forms in which they are finally presented here. They are Blaine Counter, Brendan Cleak, Caryn Sandoval, Jordan Rodriguez, and Emily Warner. I’d be remiss if I did not acknowledge the invaluable support from the English Department faculty at California State University, East Bay. Professors Stephen Gutierrez, Jacqueline Doyle, and Susan Gubernat not only provided me the classroom opportunities, but the personal encouragement to give me confidence. I also owe a special debt of gratitude to Professor Eileen Barrett, who first encouraged me to consider graduate school in the first place. iv Table of Contents Acknowledgments Fiction ........................................................................................................................1 -

My grandfather, also named James Galway, was a highly regarded fl ute player in Belfast. He in turn taught my Tfather — another James Galway — to play the fl ute, which he did very well. So as small children my younger brother, George, and I grew up to the sound of the fl ute. Our grandfather came to live with us during the last years of his life. He didn ’ t socialize much with us boys, or tell us stories about the old days. But in the evenings, after George and I had been sent upstairs to bed, he often played softly for a while, a few tunes he was especially fond of. I loved listening to him, and I held off fall- ing asleep as long as he was playing. My father, meanwhile, was devoted to Mozart. By the time I was eight, I could recognize the main themes of Mozart ’ s G Minor Symphony and Jupiter Symphony, because my father played them for me over and over. Although my grandfather was self - taught, he was good enough that he had often played in the opera orchestra. But his real passion 11 cc01.indd01.indd 1111 99/3/09/3/09 77:03:17:03:17 PPMM the man with the golden flute was playing in the fl ute bands that we had in Belfast. -

Vince Giordano Collection Finding Aid (PDF)
University of Missouri-Kansas City Dr. Kenneth J. LaBudde Department of Special Collections NOT TO BE USED FOR PUBLICATION BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Born in Brooklyn, New York, Vince Giordano’s passion for music from the 1920s and 1930s, and the people that made it, began at age 5. He has amassed an amazing collection of over 60,000 band arrangements, 1920s and 1930s films, 78 recordings and jazz-age memorabilia. Giordano sought out and studied with important survivors from the period: Paul Whiteman’s hot arranger Bill Challis and drummer Chauncey Morehouse, as well as bassist Joe Tarto. Giordano’s passion, commitment to authenticity, and knowledge led him to create a sensational band of like-minded players, the Nighthawks. Giordano has single-handedly kept alive an amazing genre of American music that continues to spread the joy and pathos of an era that shaped our nation. A Grammy-winner and multi-instrumentalist, Giordano has played in New York nightclubs, appeared in films such as The Cotton Club, The Aviator, Finding Forrester, Revolutionary Road, and HBO’s Boardwalk Empire; and performed concerts at the Town Hall, Jazz At Lincoln Center and the Newport Jazz Festival. Recording projects include soundtracks for the award- winning Boardwalk Empire with vocalists like Elvis Costello, Patti Smith, St. Vincent, Regina Spektor, Neko Case, Leon Redbone, Liza Minnelli, Catherine Russell, Rufus Wainwright and David Johansen. He and his band have also recorded for Todd Haynes' Carol, Terry Zwigoff’s Ghost World, Tamara Jenkins’ The Savages, Robert DeNiro’s The Good Shepherd, Sam Mendes’ Away We Go, Michael Mann’s Public Enemies, and John Krokidas’ debut feature, Kill Your Darlings; along with HBO’s Grey Gardens and the miniseries Mildred Pierce. -
