Who's who at Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team Gerard Quinn Senior Manager, Motorsport, Ford of Europe Gerard took charge of Ford of Europe's motorsport programmes in June 2009. He manages all European motorsport activities, among them the company's primary discipline – the FIA World Rally Championship – and works alongside team director Malcolm Wilson. Gerard is also responsible for a team of marketing professionals and product development engineers to further develop Ford's European motorsport strategy. He joined the Blue Oval in 1988 as a production line operator at Britain's Dagenham plant, progressing through a number of management positions, including business system development and purchasing disciplines. His first professional involvement with motorsport came in 2005 as the purchasing manager responsible for Ford of Europe's motorsport activities and he was instrumental in managing the commercial and contractual aspects of Ford's involvement in WRC and Formula Ford. He also had a significant involvement in Ford's performance vehicle programmes, notably the new Focus RS. In June 2008 he moved back to his native Cork when he was appointed Dealer Operations Manager for Ford of Ireland. A confirmed motorsport fan, Gerard attended his first rally in 1969, aged just five, and was an active member of Cork Motor Club during the 1980s. Malcolm Wilson Team Director Malcolm has 30 years' experience of rallying at world championship level, much of it with Ford. As a driver he won two British national titles in the late 1970s and achieved a long-held ambition by winning the British international crown in 1994, all at the wheel of Escorts. He drove for three factory teams in the world championship and spent several years as Ford's chief test driver, developing new rally cars. Under his guidance M-Sport has become one of the world's leading private teams with a string of international titles and rally wins to its credit, including 46 event victories at world championship level. As director of the Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team at its magnificent Dovenby Hall headquarters in the heart of the English Lake District, Malcolm has responsibility for Ford's world rally activities for a 15th season. Christian Loriaux Technical Director Christian joined the team in the newly created role of technical director at the beginning of December 2001. The experienced Belgian heads the engineering department responsible for the development of the Fiesta RS World Rally Car at M-Sport. Christian's motorsport career started in 1991 when he joined Prodrive as a design engineer. He became chief engineer there in 1998 and was responsible for the car which took Richard Burns to the world title in 2001. His decision to join Ford was regarded as a major coup for the squad. The radical and highly- praised 2003 Focus RS WRC was his first all-new car for the team. He was the driving force behind the new generation Focus RS WRC 06 and the evolution 2007 version, with which Ford won the FIA World Rally Championship manufacturers' title in consecutive seasons. More recently, he led the M-Sport team which developed the all-new Fiesta RS WRC for 2011. John is a former co-driver and won Britain's road rally series in 1981 and 1985 with Ron Beecroft, against the likes of Colin McRae's former co-driver, Nicky Grist. He returned to the co-driver's seat in 2008 to partner Malcolm Wilson to victory in Britain's Roger Albert Clark Rally in a Ford Escort and repeated his success in 2009 alongside Gwyndaf Evans. He joined Ford in 1992 and his expertise and knowledge of the logistics of world championship rallying is highly valued when it comes to making on-the-spot decisions during events. John works closely with rally organisers to ensure that the team's logistics run smoothly. His is the voice in regular radio contact with the team's drivers and co-drivers during rallies. ENGINEERING Chris Gray Test and Development Engineer Chris has worked at M-Sport for 11 years. He started his career in motorsport with Gordon Spooner Engineering during a three-year degree course at Brunel University in London, working on the British Rally Championship. After graduating in 1999 with a BEng Honours degree, Chris continued to work for GSE covering world championship recces and rallies. He moved to M-Sport for the 2000 season as a test and event engineer. In 2002 he was a senior event engineer on tests and rallies with responsibility for Colin McRae’s car, switching his attentions to François Duval for 2003 and 2004. He shared responsibility for Roman Kresta's car early in 2005 before switching to Toni Gardemeister's Focus for the second half of the year. In 2006 he shared responsibility for Mikko Hirvonen's car and has led the team's comprehensive off-event test programme for the past four seasons. Chris was a key figure in M-Sport's development of the Fiesta S2000 rally car in 2009 and was heavily involved in the development of the Fiesta RS WRC throughout 2010. Tom Fowler Event Engineer for Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen Tom has worked for the company for more than five years since leaving Oxford Brookes University with a BA Honours in automotive engineering. Passionate about motorsport, he built his own rally car, a Peugeot 205 GTI, and spent two years competing in the 205 Challenge as well as spending time servicing for teams competing in the Ford Ka Challenge. In 2007 he took on the role of engineering Mikko Hirvonen's car on events. Tim Jackson Event Engineer for Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila Tim graduated with a BA Honours degree in aeromechanical systems engineering from the Royal Military College of Science before going on to earn a Masters degree in motorsport engineering and management at Cranfield University in the UK. While studying he undertook project work involving side impact protection on WRC cars and worked with Monster Sport Europe on various aspects of the initial UK testing of the Suzuki Swift S1600 rally car. While at university, he also worked as a mechanic for Asquith Autosport in the British Rally Championship on various S1600 and GpN cars. Tim also worked in circuit racing, spending time as a mechanic in the Thoroughbred Grand Prix and Euroboss (historic F1) series. He joined M-Sport towards the end of 2005 and in 2007 he combined a test team role with looking after Khalid Al Qassimi and other customers on WRC events. Tim stepped up in 2008 to engineer Jari-Matti Latvala. The control tyre regulations removed many of George's pressures but he remains in charge of the team's tyres. He started his career at club level in the early 1980s preparing Group B cars and managing a rally preparation business. As well as working with various customer programmes for Malcolm Wilson since 1984, he worked with Mohammed Ben Sulayem in the world championship and Alister McRae when he won the British Championship in 1994. In 1996 he became self-employed and when offered a contract on Ford's world championship programme at the end of that year, George didn't hesitate in renewing his links with Wilson. His knowledge and skills are held in the highest regard throughout the world championship. Keith 'Skally' Adlard Car Controller for Mikko Hirvonen and Jarmo Lehtinen At the age of 16, 'Skally' began his career in motorsport working for RED Motorsport. After two- and-a-half years he moved to work with amateur driver Pete Littler and took responsibility for the car in which Littler won the BTRDA championship in Britain. He has spent 13 years at M-Sport working as a car builder in the workshop and on WRC events. In 2002 he was responsible for the WRC engines being installed into the rally cars while on the long haul events he took charge of the team's on-event equipment from the moment it arrived in the country to when it was loaded back into the containers to move onto its next destination. In 2003, he was fully responsible for the car of Mikko Hirvonen. In 2004 he worked with François Duval and in 2005 with Toni Gardemeister. He renewed his links with Hirvonen in 2006. Norman Smith Car Controller for Jari-Matti Latvala and Miikka Anttila Norman began as a truck fitter at Ford’s competition department at Boreham before becoming a rally technician. After 10 years at the Essex-based company he joined Malcolm Wilson Motorsport in 1993 and works on a freelance basis, spending his time between events with his wife and children on his farm in Essex.
