Gil Hernández Pozo In Residence Development Drive (ABCD) campaign. Many of you are familiar with this campaign and how we are all called as a parish to support it. If we all contribute Mrs. Mary E. Fernández, Ed.S. to this effort according to our possibilities we can reach our goal of $289,000 for School Principal 2020. The Archbishop’s Charity and Development Drive supports priestly formation, evangelization and ministry, and Roberto Berrocal charitable works that include Catholic Charities and other services. According to Music Director figures received from the Archdiocese, 32% of our goal, goes to the formation of OFFICE HOURS our future priests and deacons. 31%, supports evangelization and formation (Horas de Oficina) programs, Radio Paz, the diocesan newspapers Florida Catholic y La Voz Monday thru Friday/Lunes a Viernes Católica, broadcasting the Mass on TV, youth ministry, religious education, 8:00 am-5:00 pm marriage and family life and college campus ministry. It will compel a priest to reveal to police some sins he hears in confession. The new priests, John Anthony Pietruszka, 32, Javier Ramirez, 43, and Mark Ruiz, 56, listened attentively. Father Pietruszka is from Fall River Massachusetts; Father Ramirez from Culiacán, Sinaloa, Mexico; and Mark Father Ruiz was born and raised in Oakland. Given the recent referral of the Children and Community Services Amendment Bill 2019 (Bill) to the Committee for inquiry, I wish by these means, to make a submission relating to the same. I am firmly in support of attempts to better protect children from those that would seek to harm them, and note that on the part of the Catholic Church, a great deal in this respect has already been implemented. As you may appreciate however, I am deeply concerned that the Bill, should it be passed into law, would seek to compel me as a priest, to divulge confidential information provided in the context of the Sacrament of Penance (Confession). You may be aware that Confession is, for Catholics, a very sacred thing and indeed forms part of fundamental Catholic religious practice. Integral to the very form and nature of that Sacrament is of course what is termed the “inviolable seal” i.e. confidentiality. We, as Catholics, believe that in the confessional we can tell God everything that is in our heart and seek his healing mercy. The priest is only an instrument; he stands in the “person of Christ.” We confess our sins, not to a man, but to God. Therefore, the privacy of that intimate conversation, our ability to speak with total honesty from our lips to God’s ear, is absolutely vital in one’s relationship with God.

    Knights of Columbus Martyrs of Mexico History of the Knights of Columbus Priest Martyrs of Mexico In the early 20th century, the Mexican government began a widespread persecution of Catholics. In 1926, priests, missionaries and members of religious orders were expelled from the country. Ignoring the right to religious freedom, the government under President Plutarco Elías Calles took control of churches, seminaries, convents and schools, thereby beginning the campaign to do away with all of the “fanatics” who professed their Catholic faith. In the face of violence and persecution, more than a million Mexicans migrated to the United States seeking refuge; others spontaneously organized to defend themselves against government oppression, some peacefully and others taking up arms under the banner of “Cristo Rey” (“Christ the King”). This was the beginning of what became known as the Cristiada or Cristero War. For three years (1926-1929), the Mexican people lived through violent persecution, in which priests and laypeople were ordered to renounce Christ in public. To refuse to do so meant facing not only punishment, but even torture and death. Thousands of Mexican Catholics gave witness to their faith or fought to defend it. In many cases, they paid for it with their lives. Their acts of love and bravery have echoed throughout the decades, and we remember their testimony today. Since its founding in Mexico in 1905, the Knights of Columbus had promoted and given witness to a vibrant understanding of Catholic citizenship. By the time of the 1924 Eucharistic Congress in Mexico City, there were already more than 50 K of C councils throughout the country — from Jiménez, Chihuahua, to Mérida, Yucatán.
