Twenty-seven species are found in the Paleocene, 442 in the Eocene and 94 in the Oligocene. The greatest diversity of Curculionoidea is described from the Eocene of Europe and North America. The richest faunas are known from Eocene localities, Florissant (177 species), Baltic amber (124 species) and Green River formation (75 species). The family Curculionidae dominates in all Paleogene localities. Weevil species associated with herbaceous vegetation are present in most localities since the middle Paleocene. Introduction Research into the biodiversity of the past is very important for understanding the development of life on our planet. Insects are one of the Main components of both extinct and recent ecosystems. Coleoptera occupied a special place in the terrestrial animal biotas of the Mesozoic and Cenozoics, as they are characterized by not only great diversity but also by their ecological specialization. -

Cotasteromimus (Cotasterorhinus subgen. n.) philippinensis Legalov, sp. n. is described and illustrated from Mindanao and Luzon (Philippines). The new subgenus differs from the nominative subgenus in the presence of distinct teeth on the femora. The new species is similar to Cotasteromimus squamiger Morimoto et Miyakawa, 1985 but differs in the dentate femora, sparse and coarsely punctate pronotum, elytra in the apical quarter more strongly narrowed laterally and uniformly convex dorsally, and weakly rounded apex of the aedeagus. The genus Ilacuris is revised with three species recognized: I. laticollis Pascoe, 1865 and I. suttoni Anderson & Setliff, new species from Australia, and I. papuana Anderson & Setliff, new species from Papua New Guinea. A second species of Notopissodes, N. variegatus Oberprieler, new species from Australia, is also described. Lastly, Kuschelorhinus hirsutus Anderson & Setliff, new genus and new species, is described from Papua New Guinea. The new genus is a close relative of Ilacuris and it is named in honor of our esteemed late colleague, Guillermo ‘Willy’ Kuschel (1918–2017), recognizing his interest in Araucaria-associated Coleoptera. Habitus images, natural history information and a key to the Araucaria-associated Orthorhinini are presented. -

In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 1 Molecular Phylogenetics of the Superfamily Curculionoidea (Insecta: Coleoptera) Conrad Paulus Dias Trafford Gillett March 2014 Thesis abstract This thesis examines higher-level evolutionary history within the superfamily Curculionoidea, the most speciose family-level taxon, which includes beetles commonly known as weevils. This is achieved using a phylogenetic approach incorporating the largest datamatrix yet employed for weevil molecular systematics, and includes an investigation into the prospect of obtaining short phylogenetically informative amplicons from archival museum specimens. Newly obtained DNA sequence data is analysed from a variety of mitochondrial and nuclear loci, including 92 mitogenomes assembled through the approach of next-generation sequencing of pooled genomic DNA. The resulting trees are used to test previous morphological- and molecular-based hypotheses of weevil relationships and classification schemes. Mitogenomic-derived trees reveal topologies that are highly congruent with previous molecular studies, but that conflict with some morphological hypotheses. Strong nodal support strengthens inferences into the relationships amongst most weevil families and suggests that the largest family, the Curculionidae, is monophyletic, if the subfamily Platypodinae is excluded. -

The Case of the Deodar Weevil
What Is Attacking My Pine? The Case of the Deodar Weevil Many pine owners are able to identify the damage caused by southern pine beetles (Dendroctonus frontalis) (SPB) or Ips engraver beetles (Ips spp.). Many, however, have never heard of the deodar weevil (Pissodes nemorensis) unless they have experienced an outbreak on their property. Fortunately, this native insect leaves very distinctive signs and tree symptoms that landowners can use to survey their pines for this pest. Deodar weevils are native insects that attack a variety of conifers, such as all loblolly (Pinus taeda), longleaf (P. palustris), shortleaf (P. echinata), and slash (P. elliottii). In response to deodar weevils and other insects, pines have developed natural defenses which effectively prevent attacks when trees are healthy and growing rapidly. During most years, deodar weevils only attack a few suppressed, unhealthy trees scattered in well-managed plantations. As such, the deodar weevil is not an insect that regularly alters traditional pine management. Pine owners should be mindful of the risk deodar weevils can pose under certain environmental conditions. Figure 1. Os objetivos deste estudo foram isolar, identificar e avaliar a atividade comportamental dos voláteis produzidos pelos machos de P. castaneus. Nossos resultados indicam que a comunicação entre indivíduos desta espécie é mediada por feromônios, o que foi evidenciado pela atração significativa de fêmeas pelos voláteis produzidos pelos machos. -
