Do you know the life of Fr. Walter Ciszek? He’s an American hero in my book; he should probably be declared a saint. His parents came from and settled in a mining town in . Walter was a tough young man who somehow made it into the Jesuits and they somehow trained him to become a . Fr. Ciszek then went to serve as a priest in Poland. But when World War II broke out, the Soviets threw him into prison as a Vatican spy. Then they sent him to the terrifying labor camps—the Siberian . How do you keep your faith in Jesus, when you worked almost to death? How do you even keep alive, when you’re given barely anything to eat and the cold gnaws at your flesh? How? The Mass. This courageous priest knew he needed the living Jesus, and so did his fellow prisoners. Putting his life at risk, they celebrated Mass in secret, under the worst of conditions. The almost-starving prisoners would even fast in preparation to receive Jesus in holy Communion. Did it do any good? Let’s listen to Fr. Ciszek himself:

Yet what a source of sustenance it was to us then, how much it meant to us to have the Body and Blood of Christ as the food of our spiritual lives in this sacrament of love and joy. The experience was very real; you could feel its effects upon your mind and heart, upon your daily life. For us it was a necessity, to foster the life of the soul, just as much as our daily bread was necessary to sustain the body . . . I would go to any length, suffer any inconvenience, run any risk to make the bread of life available to these men.

Fr. Ciszek is not the only heroic priest from our Catholic family. Back in Poland, Fr. would be celebrating Mass in the Nazi death camp of Auschwitz. Throughout the war, Catholic would be celebrating field Masses for the soldiers they served. I am so inspired and equally ashamed to hear this testimony. I do not work in a Soviet labor camp. I am not in a Nazi death camp. But you and I do share the same faith in the Eucharist as these Catholic brothers of ours. We believe that at the Mass God uses the priest to change the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of the Living Jesus. It’s why our parishes made the effort together to celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass even in our parking lot when we had to. We recognized we needed to be close to Jesus and that in his kindness he had humbled himself to come close to us.

On this Feast of the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, let us be grateful that he makes himself present to us each day in the Holy Eucharist. It is a presence that is true and real—so real that it gave Fr. Ciszek the strength to live another day. It was Jesus himself who strengthened Fr. Ciszek, Fr. Kolbe and all those they served. It IS Jesus who will strengthen you, too, day by day when you feast on him in Holy Communion. I know many people are still living in fear. I’ll bet Fr. Ciszek had more to fear than we do. But he knew where to find courage. He knew that he feasted on courage itself when he consumed the Body of Christ. It is the same Jesus who offers himself to you: in the Eucharist and only in the Eucharist will you find the courage to live in holiness in the circumstances of your life.

As for me, I recognize that my celebration of the Mass happens under very comfortable circumstances. I complain when it’s too hot or too cold, while these heroic priests made no complaint about their painful circumstances. Well, let’s not let our faith become lazy and comfortable. Fr. Ciszek, pray for us! Now that the doors of our church have been open wide, help us to honor and adore our Lord Jesus Christ each Sunday. May Jesus himself move us to bring his grace and his life to a world that is spiritually starving.

With my prayers,

Fr. Jerome

PS: If you are able, I invite you to join our Lord as we carry him in procession from St. Mary Nativity to the Cathedral of St. Raymond. We begin at about 1:30pm, after our 12:30pm Mass on Sunday, June 6.

FAMILY FAITH FORMATION 2021-22

Dear Faith Formation Families,

I am delighted to be the new Director of Faith Formation and look forward to continuing the Family of Faith program by Sophia Press. This curriculum offers parents a unique opportunity to relate spiritually to their own children. Our families are of central importance!

The Catechism states that parents “…have the first responsibility for the education of their children. They bear witness to this responsibility first by creating a home where tenderness, forgiveness, respect, fidelity, and disinterested service are the rule.” “Education in the faith by the parents should begin in the child's earliest years... The parish is the Eucharistic community and the heart of the liturgical life of Christian families; it is a privileged place for the catechesis of children and parents. (CCC 2223 & 2226)

* In the Fall, we will be moving back to sessions on campus *

The Family of Faith program consists of three meetings each month.

FIRST meeting: a parish leader will meet with parents. During this meeting, either myself or one of our catechists will help parents prepare the family lesson for the next week. At the same time, your children will be receiving a lesson from the catechists. This meeting will be from 10am to 10:40am on Sunday. It allows your family to take part in either the 9am or 11am Mass. You can either come for class and stay for Mass or come to class and stay for Mass.

SECOND meeting: this is at your home, so you can pick the time. It might be helpful to plan a specific time, just to pick up the habit of getting together regularly.

THIRD and final meeting of the month: this is held the following week for everyone. It is meant to be a chance to connect as a parish family and see how the lessons are going.

Later, I’ll send to you other details for those families who are preparing for the sacraments of first Confes- sion, first Holy Communion, and Confirmation. For now, please review the calendar for the year ahead on the next page. Mark your calendars for the Introduction on Sunday, September 26, 2021, at 10am. Details will come later this Summer as to when to pick up your books.

God bless you and your families,

Barbara Surges

THE NINE MONTHS OF THE CHILD JESUS IN THE WOMB OF MARY Each year on December 25th we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. For centuries the Church has also celebrated his conception on March 25, the feast of the Annunciation. Our parishes have once again begun our ‘Spiritual Adoption” program. Each month we will be keeping you up to date with the development of your baby. THE THIRD MONTH –MAY 25 TO JUNE 25 Faith-filled , believing the revelation that he is to be the protector of the Messiah, bravely stands by Mary’s side, offering his strength and sense of mission as her body begins to accommodate her child. How many fathers have abandoned the mothers of their children? Indeed, how many fathers who have treasured a child never know of its existence or of its terrible end? Babies are denied life who can at this stage hear, open and close their lips, hiccup and suck their thumbs. At three inches, the baby now begins to kick, curl and fan toes, make a fist, and practice breathing. Pray for all fathers that they may use the awesome power of life-giving to be a true protector.
