Our Photography Division will provoke visitors with mysterious and haunting images from amateur photographers around the world. The Children’s Division will transport the youngest gardeners and designers to the exotic East where they too, can revel in Eastern Obsessions. The expansive front lawn of Rosecliff will lure visitors through an iconic Moon Gate into gardens filled with “Zen-full” inspirations. As always, shopping at the Oceanside Boutiques and the Gardener’s Marketplace are a much anticipated Newport tradition. The Opening Night Party will launch the summer season in Newport with a cocktail buffet, live music, a seaside supper and other surprises. -

This Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) is made as of this 18th day of November 2016, by and among the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS), the District of Columbia State Historic Preservation Officer (DCSHPO), the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC), and the National China Garden Foundation (NCGF), (referred to collectively herein as the “Parties” or “Signatories” or individually as a “Party” or “Signatory”) pursuant to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), 16 U.S.C. §470f and its implementing regulations 36 CFR Part 800, and Section 110 of the NHPA, 16 U.S.C. § 470h-2. WHEREAS, the United States National Arboretum (USNA) is a research and education institution, public garden and living museum, whose mission is to enhance the economic, environmental, and aesthetic value of landscape plants through long-term, multidisciplinary research, conservation of genetic resources, and interpretative gardens and educational exhibits. Established in 1927, and opened to the public in 1959, the USNA is the only federally-funded arboretum in the United States and is open to the public free of charge; and, WHEREAS, the USNA, located at 3501 New York Avenue, NE, is owned by the United States government and under the administrative jurisdiction of the USDA’s ARS and occupies approximately 446 acres in Northeast Washington, DC and bound by Bladensburg Road on the west, New York Avenue on the north, and M Street on the south. -

借景‐中国《园冶》(1634)理论与17世纪日本造园艺术实践(中文) (引言―英语) BORROWING THE LANDSCAPE Theory in China's Yuanye (1634) and Practice in Japanese garden art of the seventeenth century -Abstract- In Far Eastern landscape design a typical technique to incorporate a distant view outside the garden, as part of the garden design is called Borrowed Scenery. Borrowed Scenery has become known to the world in English with its Japanese name shakkei and many old Japanese gardens with a landscape scene as background, are thought to have been designed on purpose as a shakkei garden. But shakkei is for the first time in Japan’s history a purpose of design in some gardens of the 17th century. Shortly before these gardens were made, the garden book Yuanye appeared in China that writes in much detail about the meaning and technique of borrowed scenery, using the same word shakkei, pronounced jiejing in modern Chinese. It can be no coincidence that practice and theory appeared almost at the same time. In similar ways, in China as well as in Japan, the well-educated elite wanted to understand the natural world - and man’s creative energy to improve it. Yuanye was written by Ji Cheng, who was fully aware of the workings of landscape design, not in the least because his context was a society that was much interested in natural landscape and in building gardens in it. Yuanye holds therefore profound teachings about human understanding of landscape – and jiejing, borrowing landscape, is the term with which Ji Cheng chose to explain his uppermost level of understanding landscape design. -

This paper aims to discuss the method of using topographic formations in landscape design, particularly focusing on three topographic functions: enclosure forming, viewpoint settings, and view settings. We selected Japanese gardens as case studies and adopted a three-layer model to classify a landscape design based on topographic functions, site planning, and architectural planning. In Jyojyu-in, the unique topographic condition is utilized to form an enclosed space and to realize both a deep mountain view and a prospect view. In Jisho-ji, the unique topographic condition is utilized to form an enclosed space and construct three different views. Serenity pervades a Chinese garden of the Ming dynasty, for this is a place of retreat from the doings of humankind. It is where the functionary of the kingdom could indulge his "longing for mountains and water" without turning his back on his unrelenting obligations to state and family. Yet serenity is only the first of infinite layers that reveal themselves. The object of the garden is to capture all the elements of the natural landscape--mountains, rivers, lakes, trees, valleys, hills--and, by bringing them together in a small space, to concentrate the life force, the qi, that animates them. It is a harmony of contrasts, of dark and light, solid and empty, hard and soft, straight and undulating, yin and yang. This place was created to be savoured ever a lifetime. New meanings would be found in the symbolic objects and plants, new pictures seen as shadows placed across the rocks. The garden unfolded itself slowly. In this site, the Garden comes to life. A Synopsis of the Culture of Chinese Gardens Prepared by Malcolm Wong – Chairman of the Dunedin Chinese Gardens Trust (February 2009) Introduction In his book Yuan Ye, which was completed in 1634, Ji Cheng wrote that although the garden is made with the hand of man it must look as though it was made in heaven. To fully understand the concept of the Chinese garden is to understand how the Chinese view the universe. This may seem a bold statement but over two thousand years of history gives it some credence. What then makes this so and why have Chinese gardens so fascinated the West? When did this fascination begin and why can’t these Gardens be recreated by western gardeners? In the 1920’s an educated Chinese gentlemen, on visiting Europe, commented when shown a “mown and bordered lawn which, while no doubt would be of interest to a cow, offers no interest to human beings”. Therein lies the fundamental difference in gardening between East and West. Chinese build gardens whereas the West plant gardens. However, if the difference was as simple as that to master, Chinese gardens would have been replicated with ease by the great western landscape architects. The fascination by the West of things Chinese began on the eve of 1699 when the Court of France held a Chinese festival to commemorate the coming new year. The term “chinoiserie” was coined at this time and so began the West’s great desire for all things Chinese. This interest included porcelain, artwork, furniture and ceramics and then extended to gardening. -
