Rosen1 Who's Your Daddy: Father Trumps Fate in Supernatural From the pilot episode, Supernatural has clearly been rooted in family, specifically in a male-only family. The brief glimpse viewers have of the Winchester household together is quickly replaced by a family ravaged by the death of a beloved mother and wife. Following Mary’s death, the family becomes less like kin and more like an elite fighting squad with John as the stern general. John’s shift from loving, nurturing father to disciplinarian will have far- reaching effects on Dean and Sam and the men that they will ultimately become, yet their experiences with John as father are vastly different. -

Metafictional Strategies in Supernatural Alberto N
Breaking the Mirror Metafictional Strategies in Supernatural Alberto N. Garcia Like those guys, from the book. What are they called? Uh . Supernatural! Two guys use fake IDs with rock aliases, hunt down ghosts, demons, and vampires. What are their names? Uh . “The Monster at the End of This Book” (4.18) When the seller of the “Golden Comic” bookshop describes the protagonists of the novels written by Carver Edlund, viewers share the surprise of Sam and Dean, the protagonists of Supernatural, the tv show. With the characters’ realization that their own lives are being reflected in the books, the illusionist mirror created by this fantasy series of horror and adventure is shattered. Illusionism, argues Robert Stam, “pretends to be something more than mere artistic production; it presents its characters as real people, its sequence of words or images as real time, and its representations as substantiated fact” (1). But what happens in the “The Monster at the End of This Book” is not an isolated occurrence. Because one of the 146 breaking the mirror most unique narrative strategies of Supernatural is the way it creates a break with the mirror that characterizes traditional fiction and turns it in upon itself, underscoring its own fictitiousness. This rupture occurs, in varying degrees, throughout the entire series and proves essential in the Winchesters’ battle against the army of darkness. Patricia Waugh defines metafiction as “a term given to fictional writing which self-consciously and systematically draws attention to its status as an artifact in order to pose questions about the relation- ship between fiction and reality” (2). -

The Gospel of the Winchesters (And Their Fans): Neoreligious Fan Practices and Narrative in Supernatural
The Gospel of the Winchesters (And Their Fans): Neoreligious Fan Practices and Narrative in Supernatural Charlotte E. Howell, University of Texas, Austin. Abstract The television show, Supernatural (The WB/CW 2005-present), has evolved its own subversive take on Christianity in which all of the events of the series’ first five seasons created a new religious gospel. Within the show’s narrative, fans of the book series, Supernatural, are representations—and exaggerations—of actual fans of the television series, Supernatural. The integration of real-world fan activity (even if based predominantly online) into the religious narrative of Supernatural activates discourses of neoreligiosity in fan practices similar to those studied by Matthew Hills and Ann Taves’ study of “specialness” in relation to religious experience. I use neoreligiosity regarding the fandom to invoke the flexibility of religious experience beyond the ascriptive web of connotations that “religion” implies. The difference for the show and my argument is discursive: religion is recognizable, known, and ideological, but neoreligiosity is flexible, adaptive, nebulous and numinous. Within the show, Supernatural, fans are performing religious acts, whether they know it or not, because the show imposes this designation through its narrative by linking Supernatural television fans with devotees to the Winchester Gospel, gospel that is religious if apocryphal. My paper analyzes the dialogue between fan works and the show’s narrative and use of hybrid objects that invoke questions of religious intention, (neo-)religious ritual, and attention to and scrutiny of fan practices and agency within the object with which they engage. Pour le résumé en français, voir la fin de l’article ***** The television show, Supernatural (The WB/CW 2005-present), has evolved its own subversive take on Christianity in which all of the events of the series’ first five seasons created a new religious gospel. -
The Startling Realism of Apocalyptic Horror Fiction
" ,- The Startling Realism of Apocalyptic Horror Fiction An Honors Thesis (HONRS 499) by Brett A. Ritchie iI Thomas Thornburg Ball State University Muncie, Indiana December 1993 Date of Graduation - December 19, 1993 ~(oil Illt'S(': ;,. J:,,! :2 I, 8~) .'tA - 1 ~1,Cj? ,P5B Purpose of Thesis: This discussion of apocalyptic horror fiction is limited to two works of fiction: Robert R. McCammon's Swan Song and Stephen King's The Stand. There is an exploration of the background of horror fiction in contemporary culture and a discussion of the different styles of each author. The focus of the thesis will be to show the intellectual value of apocalyptic horror fiction as it pertains to politics, social problems, people and their lives, religion, and symbolism . ..- The Startling Realism of Apocalyptic Horror Fiction Anticipation begins to build as the young teenage girl approaches the barn where only seconds earlier she had heard the high pitched wail of someone in agony. She crosses the screen cautiously, yet seems unaware of the imminent danger music that has become so cliche for the 1980's horror film. She turns the corner and lets out a wild cacophony of horrifying screams. The previous fictional excerpt could have come from a myriad of low-budget, no-plot horror films that littered the screen in the late 1970's and all throughout the 1980's. Unfortunately, this is the type of scenario that most people associate with horror, whether in films or novels. These works have created the impression for some that horror fiction, a genre that has existed for over two centuries, is devoid of any contemporary social value. -

Freedom to Fall: Milton’s Christ, Supernatural’s Castiel, and the Secularity of Choice By Cassidy Trudeau Introduction: Defining Secularity “I’m the one who gripped you tight and raised you from perdition.” With Castiel’s first appearance in CW’s Supernatural (2005-present), he ushered in the introduction of angelic lore to the show’s canon. Before Castiel’s entrance in season four’s premiere, “Lazarus Rising,” the cult television show’s depiction of religious imagery did not focus on the divine, but creatures posing as the divine. Hell and demons existed in the canon, but Sam and Dean Winchester battled with their religious faith early on in show. Creatures that appeared to be divine, whether they indicated the presence of God like in the episode “Faith” (1.12) or angels in “Houses of Holy” (2.13), turned out to be reapers and ghosts. -

TITLE: VENI, VIDI, VIDS: TRANSFORMING CULTURAL NARRATIVES THROUGH THE ART OF AUDIO VISUAL STORYTELLING MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Rachel Whaley The focus of this research is “fanvids” which are the creative work of fans that combine clips or images from a visual “canon” source (usually a television series or movie) to music to create an alternative narrative. By using qualitative content analysis methods, I sampled from the television show Supernatural and the 2009 film Star Trek to understand the ways diverse characters were presented and what types of cultural narratives existed. Then I sampled from seven different vidding communities, collecting a total of 105 vids and 6509 comments on those vids as the second part of my sample.
