The question of the treatment of religious minorities concerns America’s core values as a nation, but, in recent foreign policy, it is one that the United States has too often failed to address, with tragic results. It represents a grave human rights crisis and undermines our national security interests. I am honored to have been invited to testify for the Hudson Institute’s Center for Religious Freedom. In my testimony, I will focus on the situation of the various Christian groups in Syria, and the threat they face to their continued existence in their ancient homeland. This threat, which undoubtedly applies equally to Syria’s other defenseless and even smaller minorities – such as the Yizidis (80,000) and Jews (under 100) -- about whom there is scant information, is not recognized or understood in US foreign policy.     Rima TÜZÜN We are running out of time. Distinguished Members of the European Parliament, honourable Chair, dear guests, on behalf of the European Syriac Union, I would like to thank the EPP for this invitation, for the possibility to make a short speech. First of all, I would like to introduce us very shortly: Syriac people: who are we? Syriacs are known as the Christians from Iraq, from Turkey, from Iran, from Syria. We are only known as the Christians from the Middle East but we are the people who first recognised Christianity, and we are the people who spread Christianity to the world. We are the people speaking the language of Jesus Christ, Aramaic. Before Jesus Christ, our people were known as the Assyrian, the Chaldean, the Aramaic, the Babylonian people. This is very short and is meant to give you an idea of who we are speaking about. I would like to speak about Christianity in the Middle East, not only about the threat we are facing today from ISIS, but really to make the connection between the threat of ISIS, which we are facing now in the Middle East, and the threat it represents for Europe and the whole world. When our people recognised Christianity, they recognised it under every form of oppression. They have been killed, but again they were able to spread Christianity in the world. The more Christianity was spread in the Middle East, the more it was spread worldwide and brought solutions, but the weaker Christianity became in the Middle East, the more the numbers of Christians declined worldwide, and conflicts have not been solved.

Tajemnicza grupa etniczno-religijna wywodząca się z Iraku, która pięć lat te- mu stała się obiektem ludobójstwa popełnionego przez Daesh (obraźliwa nazwa Państwa Islamskiego vel ISIS powszechnie stosowana na Bliskim Wschodzie). W zeszłym roku Jezyd- ka Nadia Murad została laureatkąPokojowej Nagrody Nobla. Nadia, była niewolnica Daesh walczy na arenie międzynarodowej o prawa ofiar. Jezydzi, czasem zapisywani w Polsce jako Jazydzi to wciąż ludzie o których stosunkowo mało wiadomo. Wyznają religię znaną jako jezydyzm, ale niekoniecznie są tylko mniej- szością religijną. Wielu członków ich społeczności samookreśla się jako Jezydzi także w sensie etnicznym (dlatego zdecydowałem się tutaj na pisanie „Jezydzi” z dużej litery). Ja- ko ciekawostkęmożna podać, że w Gruzji, gdzie żyje jezydzka diaspora (pozostałe ośrodki emigracyjne to między innymi Armenia i Niemcy), podczas spisu powszechnego w 2014 roku, 12,2 tys. osób zadeklarowało jezydzką narodowość, ale już tylko 8,6 tys. jezydyzm jako wyznawaną religię1. Oczywiście daleki jestem do przekładania sytuacji społeczności emigracyjnej, żyjącej od kilku pokoleń w innych warunkach na realia Bliskiego Wschodu. Podajęten przykład tylko dla zobrazowania niejednoznaczności zagadnienia. Alternatywne podejście uznaje Jezydów za Kurdów. Faktem jest, że ich kolebka leży na pograniczu kurdyjsko-arabskim, a oni sami używają języka kurdyjskiego. Co ciekawe jest to dialekt kurmandżi (kurmanji) używany głównie w Bakur (północny, „turecki”
