Financialization of Turkey Industry Sector
www.sciedu.ca/ijfr International Journal of Financial Research Vol. 4, No. 3; 2013 Financialization of Turkey Industry Sector Işıl Tellalbaşı1 & Ferudun Kaya1 1 Abant İzzet Baysal University, Bolu, Turkey Correspondence: Ferudun Kaya, Abant İzzet Baysal University, Bolu, Turkey. Tel: 90-532-386-7266. E-mail: [email protected] Received: May 6, 2013 Accepted: June 27, 2013 Online Published: July 9, 2013 doi:10.5430/ijfr.v4n3p127 URL: http://dx.doi.org/10.5430/ijfr.v4n3p127 Abstract Financial markets in the world, especially for the last three decades, have been evolving significantly in terms of market volumes, operational intensity, institutional and regulations as well as the authorities governing them. The increase in operational volumes and the changing nature of financial markets, creations of new financial products; led to the increase of the importance of financial capital and how it affected day to day life directly became one of the most important theoretical problems. Thus, the transformation witnessed in the financial markets led to a new era, dubbed as “financialization”. In this article, the financialization of companies listed in the Istanbul Stock Exchange’s Industrial Index is analyzed using an econometric technique known as Generalized Method of Moments. The quantitative analysis has used two distinct methods to measure the relationship between firms’ investments and their debts, financial profits, sales and financial payments, variables that constitute variables for measuring financialization. Both models revealed a negative relationship between higher financial benefits and amount of investments. Keywords: financialization, mortgage crisis, generalized method of moments 1. Introduction Financial statements are the final product of accounting process. -
Credit scoring of companies: Application to the ISEM companies Abstract In this study, a scoring model is developed to make financial analysis of the companies with objective criteria. Then the model is applied to 117 companies at the ISEM (IMKB), between the years 1993 and 2002. The financial scorings of the companies derived from the model are compared with the actual financial strength and credibility using the ISEM news. This helps to verify both the consistency of the model and the positive and negative factors that affect the financial strength of the companies. The model is composed of five different financial criteria: Growth, liquidity, leverage, working capital management and profitability. -

WOMEN on BOARD 2020 Turkey Sabancı University Corporate Governance Forum WOM an on BOARDS TURKEY 1
th 8Annual Report WOMEN ON BOARD 2020 Turkey Sabancı University Corporate Governance Forum WOMAN ON BOARDS TURKEY 1 Corporate Governance Forum’s Projects Related with Women on Boards Independent Women Directors (IWD) Project Sabanci University Corporate Governance Forum (CGFT), in strategic partnership with Egon Zehnder International (EZI) Turkey, initiated the “Independent Women Directors (IWD)” project in 2012. The initiative was motivated by the CMBT’s (Capital Markets Board of Turkey) ruling that came to force in January 2012 requirıng 1/3 of the board members to be independent. Although the same ruling recommended inclusion of at least one female director, the result was dilution of boards with respect to women from 12.5% in 2011 to 11.5% ın 2012, since companies increased their board size and predominantly appointed men as independent directors to comply with the ruling. IWD is a response to this unintended consequence of the ruling. The IWD Project aims to encourage and help companies to consider female candidates when nominating independent directors. To this end, a database of qualified women is maintained. Each candidate application is evaluated against the criteria established by the Forum and EZI Turkey. As of the end of November, 2020 IWD database has 308 board-qualified women. The women who are qualified for the IWD database are included in the GBRW database if they apply, without going through a separate assessment process. In 2013, CMBT revised its recommendation upon considering the draft proposed by IWD. Accordingly, the new clause 4.3.9 of the CMBT’s current Corporate Governance Principles required the listed companies set a target rate for female board members of no less than 25% and a target date and establish a policy that will make it possible to reach these targets. -
