Ira Adler is on the way to meet his former lover and mastermind criminal Cain Goddard when an explosion turns his life upside down. Someone had planted a bomb in Goddard's house and Ira finds himself suddenly rich and grieving more than he would've imagined. Soon, he finds out via a broken nose that the case is more dangerous than expected, but he can't help but dig deeper in order to find out the who and why. He asks his friend Andrews St. Andrew, a detective, for help. His oldest friend, Doctor Lazarus thinks a change of scenery would do Ira good and urges him to go together with his family to America where his wife's family lives. Unnecessary to say that, when Ira decides his best friend is right and agrees to accompany them to America, trouble is a constant for the party and Ira always seems to be right in the middle of it. And, as coincidence will, the solution of the case Ira is distancing himself from seems to be thousands of miles away from London and every mile added brings him closer to finding out what happened. I got this book as a free read from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. In the beginning I didn't even realise that there were two volumes previous to Fool's Gold (which is kind of stupid considering that it is written on the cover ) and the author does a great job at making you not notice that fact. Honestly, I'm a bit glad that I didn't read the previous books because even though in Fool's Gold Ira and Goddard aren't together I shipped them with all my heart and if I had read a book where they actually were together I probably couldn't bear to read about Ira with someone else. Goddard reminded me of Moriarty and the whole book I kind of just waited for him to return from the dead. Which he did. Ira Adler is a likable character and Faraday's writing lets you understand every decision he makes. There is neither a 'omg what is he doing?! ' moment nor a scene where her characters are so perfect that you doubt there existence (haha, pun intended). They are quite human and sometimes they make shitty human decisions or do foolish things, but that's what makes them real . Even if you haven't read the first two books you can read this one without getting confused during some events because you lack background knowledge. So I can recommend this to anyone who wants the faint smell of an interesting whodunit, the taste of adventuring through a new country (at least from Ira's POV) and the overall theme of finding a new path in ones life. Review : Jess Faraday’s Fool’s Gold could have been subtitled “: Or The Misadventures of Ira Adler”. The series itself is the evolution of a character who’s become so beloved—all the characters, really—that revisiting him book after book, then waiting for the next adventure to begin, is sweet torture. The Ira Adler series is a Pygmalion-esque story of evolution. From street whore to respectable gentleman, Ira is the beneficiary of a dangerous benefactor’s tutelage, becomes the object of that man’s obsession, and finally… Well, I think we may still be working on the finally part as the author leads us through a tangled web of emotions—hate, love, grief, regret, making peace with the past—there is still so much more for Mr. Adler to experience, and even as he’s mourned for and said his goodbyes to the past, he may have found a future in Marshal Calvin Sutter, someone to open up a whole new world of possibilities for Ira. The man himself felt somewhat rudderless and off course in Fool’s Gold as he battles jealousy and confusion; his life rocked off its foundation, which leaves him homeless and unsure; but he’s set a new course for his life. It only remains to be seen, now, where it will take him. As the saying goes, life is a journey, not a destination , and Ira Adler is taking us on quite the trek through Victorian London and on to the American West. He becomes embroiled in a crime and mystery not of his own making (as always seems the case with our hero) that threatens his life nonetheless: framed for a robbery at sea, getting held up at gunpoint on a train bound across the barren prairies of the US, a near miss with a buffalo stampede; these are just a few of the various and sundry other pitfalls he experiences in Fool’s Gold until, finally, he finds himself at a crossroads between England and America, where he sees that America, in her relative infancy, holds the possibility of new beginnings. As this journey sweeps Ira along in its wake, he becomes as much a passenger in the adventure as we are, and just when you wonder what else could possibly go wrong for him, something does. Fool’s Gold is non-stop action, start to finish, not to mention this installment is not too terribly kind to the heart or tear ducts. As many things as go wrong for Ira, though, some things go right as well, and while they might not have gone right the way I want to see them go, that’s okay. An occasional cry never hurt anyone, now, did it? Which leads us to Cain Goddard, scholar and criminal, also known as the dreaded Duke of Dorset. Goddard, the man who, for some unknown reason, the author perhaps feels should be beyond our contempt, but isn’t. I don’t think I’ve ever loved a man of such ill repute more, and the source of all my tears? Yes. Cain Goddard. What’s happened in the evolution of these books is nothing less than superb, nothing less than heartbreaking, and while Ira’s journey isn’t over, things have most certainly changed course. And that’s all I’m going to say about that, because to say more would be unfair to those of you who want to experience every single nuance of these books for yourselves. Jess Faraday’s storytelling skills are flawless. From creating rich and multi-layered characters to texturing each layer of plot so it grounds the reader in the time and place of the novels, these books are not a lesson in Victorian Era or Old West history. They are each detailed yet subtle, every scene perfection, written with a finesse that draws you into the story and captivates and captures the imagination. There’s a reason The Affair of the Porcelain Dog and Turnbull House both made my list of their respective years’ Best Books. Fool’s Gold will make it a three-peat in 2015. Amos Lassen. Ira Adler is happy to have a breather for a while. He has cash, is involved in a relationship with a nice guy and everything is quiet. As we might have expected, nothing lasts that way for long and suddenly an explosion changed everything and he becomes eager to get out of London. He goes with some friends to America where they have a family matter to settle. After a lovely cruise across the ocean and a dalliance (I love that word) with a good-looking officer of the law, Ira realizes that he is involved in something that reaches the back alleys of London and the roads of California. Before he even has a chance to think about what is going on, Ira is involved with “train robbers, rattlesnakes, unscrupulous cattle kings, and persistent young women driven to frenzy by his exotic accent”. And then just when he is ready to go home to London, something else happens even though he wants to go home. Now he has a decision to make—will he return to London or will he stay in the States? It has been a long time since I have read any of the books that Jess Faraday has written so I felt strange jumping into the third volume of the Ira Adler series but then I realized that I did not have to read any of the other two in order to understand this book. Faraday let us know right off that Ira is 30 years old and gay and lives in London in 1895. In the past life had been difficult for him—he was an orphan who worked the street, worked for a Mafia boss, Cain Goddard, but he has pulled himself up and now works as a secretary. Ira lives by himself, has a nice salary and a regular guy to share his bed and affections. Goddard calls him to his home and the last time Ira had seen him was when Goddard beat him up a few years earlier. They had once been in a relationship together and it was Goddard that got Ira off of the street and out of prostitution. As Ira made his way to Goddard’s house, he ran late and as he approached the property, it blew up. The investigation that followed was far from honest and Ira was filled with questions about Goddard and what went down. He did, however, receive an inheritance of 250,000 pounds sterling. Ira was filled with grief and his friends Tim and Bess Lazarus convince him to come to California with them to help deal with a dispute that has to deal with Bess’s mother. But of course even the voyage across the Atlantic has problems and Ira finds himself involved in a theft investigation. It seems that a Colonel Wilkes, a former war hero has a valet named Marcus who once worked the street with Ira. Then when he is on the train from New York City to California there was also intrigue. But don’t think that is all and if I have a problem with the book it is there is just too much going on in Ira’s life and sometimes he always manages to survive. In fact, it goes beyond survival here. Not only has Ira eschewed his old ways but he also has money (from Goddard) and he finds another romantic interest. Author Faraday has done her research well and she provides us with some interesting historical information as well as a very interesting character in Ira.
