Gender within UK film crews by Stephen Follows www.stephenfollows.com Contents Introduction 1 1. Gender split of UK film crews, 2009-2013 2 2. Gender split by filmmaking department 4 3. Gender split in key creative roles 5 4. Comparison between UK films and US box office 6 5. What has changed in the past five years? 9 6. Does the gender of a crew matter for audiences? 12 About this survey 16 Introduction Thank you for reading my study of gender within UK film crews On my blog I explore data and statistics within the film industry. This started as sharing existing public statistics but quickly grew to include the gathering of new data. The film industry is heavily influenced by shifting opinions, so I find it useful to delve into the data to see what’s true and what is conjecture. Last month, I released a study into gender within film crews, based upon a dataset of the 100 highest grossing films at the US Box Office for each year between 1994 and 2013 (a total of 2,000 films). Additionally, in order to see how a film’s genre affects gender employment I created a second dataset of the 100 highest grossing films of each genre. As with all my research, my aim wasn’t to prove a particular point but to see what interesting results the data provides. One of the outcomes was a number of people asking me how the UK compares with Hollywood. Therefore, I have re-run my research, focusing on UK films.

  • "Mad Men" and Television Aesthetics
ARTÍCULOS Arte, Individuo y Sociedad ISSN: 1131-5598 https://dx.doi.org/10.5209/aris.62072 Mad Men and television aesthetics: Final shots as a tool for textual configuration Miguel A. Huerta1; Ernesto Pérez2 Recibido: 24 de octubre de 2018 / Aceptado: 8 de marzo de 2019 Abstract. Academic studies of Mad Men confirm that television aesthetics awaken a secondary interest among scholars. The present work joins the body of critical literature that defends the importance of style to television programming. In spite of the thrust and value of the new results achieved by television aesthetics, it is enough to look into the existing bibliography about works like Mad Men to arrive at the conclusion that their scope continues to be comparatively residual. In concrete terms, a formal analysis (scale, placing, length, angle, movement, composition, etc.) of the ‘shot unit’ related to this series is proposed. This will examine the 92 units that comprise the final shot of each episode of Mad Men, to yield the quantitative and qualitative elements that help forge the ‘aesthetic of emptiness’ that characterizes the TV show created by Matthew Weiner. The final images of each installment make up a kind of unhurried ritual in which the television form portrays a man on his own, trapped in an oppressive setting and unable to progress dramatically. Keywords: Television Aesthetics; Style; Shot; Mad Men; aesthetic of emptiness. [es] Mad Men y la estética televisiva: los planos finales como herramienta de configuración textual Resumen. Los estudios académicos sobre Mad Men confirman que la estética televisiva despierta un interés secundario en comparación con otras perspectivas.

  • Outsider Outfits: Fashion and Difference in Mad Men
Chiara Settineri Mad Men: Gender, Work, and American Culture VMS 290 Prof. Lamm December 18, 2017 Outsider Outfits: Fashion and Difference in Mad Men AMC’s hit show Mad Men (2007-2015), created by Matthew Weiner, has been widely, critically praised for its stylistic aesthetic and meticulous attention to detail and accuracy. Developing costumes on a show centered around facades, Mad Men’s costume designer Janie Bryant intentionally and artfully crafts the exteriors of the characters and uses clothing pieces that are both true to the era and to the personalities of the characters on the show. Every ensemble reflects the feelings, aspirations, and identities of the individuals who bear them. In this paper, I argue that Mad Men specifically utilizes fashion to emphasize its theme of “the other,” using Helen Bishop, Peggy Olson, and Michael Ginsberg as sites of exploration. As a divorced, economically independent mother, a single working woman, and a Jewish copywriter, respectively, each of these characters represents a departure from the status quo of New York in the 60s. Their separation from the cultural norm is highlighted through their personal style, as each of them refuses to abide by the standards of dress in their own particular ways. Their different tastes not only indicate their distance from the other characters, but also express what exactly differentiates them; their clothing choices expose the ways in which the characters defy expectations placed on them, contributing to their characterization within the show. Helen, Peggy, and Michael participate in a society which champions homogeneity, but each of them subtly rebel against the norms through their clothing—causing enough disruption to create real change in the spheres they inhabit.

  • Forgetting the Boy in the Box: Mad Men’S Don Draper and Lacan’S Mirror Stage
Forgetting the Boy in the Box: Mad Men’s Don Draper and Lacan’s Mirror Stage MYLES SAUER In the television drama Mad Men, viewers are given a glimpse into the dramatic, scandalous lives of 1960s Manhattan ad men. The program focuses on the intertwining, constantly changing re- lationships of the numerous characters and the trials they face in the workplace and beyond. No greater focus is given to a character than to Donald Draper (Jon Hamm), creative director of the firm Sterling Cooper. Confident, unwavering, and charming, Don stands tall among his fellow employees. At the same time, he remains en- igmatic and mysterious to those who know him, including his wife, Betty (January Jones). The question asked by his fellow employees, along with viewers of the show, is “who is Don Draper?” Indeed, like all the characters, there is more to Don than what is readily ap- parent. Themes of identity and self-fulfillment are both integral to show’s unfolding action, which takes place within the shifting social mores of the sixties. These evolving cultural structures and codes force Don and other characters to adapt and reshape their self-image constantly, allowing for a psychological angle to the program’s pro- ceedings. This constant re-evaluation of identity through social rela- tionships and interactions is outlined in Jacques Lacan’s concept of the mirror stage. In Lacan’s view, an infant explores its own body via its own reflection, assessing and reassessing its self-image dur- ing this process (1164). Don’s character similarly enacts a mirror stage–like process, and in that process aspires to what Lacan would call an Ideal-I; Don ultimately fails to live up to his ideal self as the facade he has previously constructed becomes destroyed.
