WIRRAL RAMBLERS SUNDAY 6th DECEMBER 2009 CHIRK TO LLANGOLLEN (LLANGOLLEN) A WALK Starting from Chirk we head east through Chirk Green to pick up the Llwybr Maelor Way at Bramble Wood and follow it westwards along the Ceirog Valley as far as Pen-Y-Bryn. At this point we join the Offas Dyke Path (ODP) and go in a generally northerly direction to Froncysyllte and walk by the canal over the vertiginous Pont Cysyllte aqueduct to Trevor. From here we follow the ODP for a short distance before taking the path along he top of the escarpment of the Panorama Walk as far as the Eglwyseg plantation where to go down to rejoin the ODP and follow it via Castle Dinas Bran into Llangollen. DISTANCE: 26.6km (16½ miles) 20½ POINTS ASCENT 610m (2000ft) B PLUS WALK Leaving Chirk car park we enter tunnel (head torches required), over the aqueduct, canal towpath, crossing railway track. Heading west we follow the Maelor Way along the River Ceiriog. Joining Offa’s Dyke Path (ODP) we ascend via quiet roads, tracks and fields enjoying good views of Chirk castle. Continuing on (ODP) we pick up the towpath of Llangollen canal and over Pont Cystyllte Aqueduct. We gradually ascend through woodland via Trevor Hall. We leave ODP below Trevor Rocks and ascend 320 meters to Castell Dinas Bran. We descend to Llangollen for a variety of refreshments. Likely to be muddy in sections. Toilets in Chirk, Pont Cystyllte Aqueduct car park. DISTANCE: 21.0km (13 miles) 17 POINTS ASCENT 550m (1800ft) B MINUS WALK From Chirk, the route follows a footpath down to the River Ceiriog, which it follows westward to Pont Faen Bridge where it joins the Maelor Way. A short ascent to Bronygarth is followed by a short descent to the B4500, which is crossed to join the Offa’s Dyke Path. At Crogen Wladys, it picks up the Ceiriog Trail for a long, steady ascent through Warren Wood, Cefn Uchaf and Blaenau Uchaf before descending, with (hopefully!) good views over the Vale of Llangollen, to Ty-Uchaf. It then follows a footpath through woodland at Pen–y-coed, climbing steeply for a short distance before the final descent to Llangollen. DISTANCE: 14.5km (9 miles) 12 POINTS ASCENT 460m (1500ft) C WALK We leave Llangollen by the canalside path westward to the Hoseshoe Falls. Turning NE, we cross the A542 to Valle Crucis Abbey and on to Abbey Cottage where we turn S to Tanycastell. We pass to the E of Castell Dinas Bran to reach the canal with 2 and a bit miles to go into Llangollen.
