May 2013. The Palace Theatre, City. Nearly 400 students from under- served public schools across the city eagerly wait for a matinee performance of ANNIE to begin, Playbills firmly in hand. The house lights go down. The overture begins with the wistful opening notes of “Tomorrow,” then kicks into high gear with I“t’s the Hard- Knock Life.” It’s showtime! During the next two-and-a-half hours, the students are immersed in a magical world of bright Broadway lights and the colorful characters who inhabit Annie’s world. For many of the students, it’s their first live theater experi- ence and for some a happy memory that will launch a lifetime of theater experiences. But no one is happier than ANNIE producer Arielle Tepper Madover. Madover first saw ANNIE when she was eight years old. I t was a magical experi- ence that made her yearn for a life in the theater. She decided to bring ANNIE back to Broadway so kids could experience the show that was so life-changing for her—and she knew education would be a significant part of that experience. With that mission in mind, she partnered with THIRTEEN’s Education Department to the ANNIE on Broadway Education Initiative, an arts education program designed to bring hands-on

theater education experiences to students through in-school workshops, an interactive website (thirteen.org/annie), and ANNIE: It’s the Hard-Knock Life, From Script to Stage, a documentary premiering this month on THIRTEEN. Through partnerships with the New York City Department of Education’s Office of the Arts, the non-profit organization Collaborative Arts Project 21 (CAP21), and generous support from the New York City Council, the unique audience development program brings the backstage excitement of theater into public school classrooms, while the documentary and website bring the magic of Broadway into homes and schools across America. “I knew THIRTEEN would be the perfect partner for the education initiative given their longstanding tradition of bringing the best arts programming and cultural resources to the New York community and their dedication to arts education,” Madover said. “I’m thrilled that New York City students and teachers have the opportunity to experience ANNIE both in the classroom and at the theater, and that we’re providing students in ANNIE’s hometown with learning experiences that will have an impact long after they see they show.” Here’s a look at the wonderful world of ANNIE on Broadway—and on THIRTEEN!
