Both paremiographers and paremiologists have been hard at work at publishing collections and treatises throughout the world. In fact, proverb scholarship has reached such a phenomenal level of accomplishment that it is difficult for the fledgling proverb scholar to deal with the plethora of valuable information (see Moll 1958; Mieder 1982, 1990, 1993, 2001). And yet, as is true for most intellectual endeavors, there still remains much work to be done in both areas of proverb studies. The varied use and function of proverbs as cultural signs and strategically placed rhetorical devices need to be investigated in much more detail by paying attention to different historical periods (Burke 1941; Seitel 1969; Obelkevich 1987; Profantová 1998). Much can also still be learned by socio- and psycholinguistic approaches that look at proverbs from the point of view of cognition, comprehension, and communication (Mieder 2003a). Above all, much more attention should be paid to the continued employment of proverbs in the modern age of technology, the mass media, the internet, and general globalization (Mieder 1993). But additional proverb collections based on serious lexicographical principles are also a definite desideratum, including regional, national, and international compilations. While much is known about common European proverbs, it is high time to assemble comprehensive and comparative African as well as Near and Far Eastern proverb collections. -

A beard is the beauty of a man; proverbs are the beauty of speech. Abstract: This article presents two groups of Uyghur proverbs on the topics of friendship and wisdom, to my knowledge only the second set of Uyghur proverbs published with English translation (after Mahmut & Smith-Finley 2016). It begins with a brief introduction of Uyghur language and culture, then a description of Uyghur proverb styles, then the two sets of proverbs, and finally a few concluding comments. Key words: Proverb, Uyghur, folly, wisdom, friend, enemy 1. Introduction Uyghur is spoken by about 10 million people, mostly in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. It is a Turkic language, most closely related to Uzbek and Salar, but also sharing similarity with its neighbors Kazakh and Kyrgyz. The lexicon is composed of about 50% old Turkic roots, 40% relatively old borrowings from Arabic and Persian, and 6% from Russian and 2% from Mandarin (Nadzhip 1971; since then, the Russian and Mandarin borrowings have presumably seen a slight increase due to increased language contact, especially with Mandarin). The grammar is generally head-final, with default SOV clause structure, A-N noun phrases, and postpositions. Stress is typically word-final. Its phoneme inventory includes eight vowels and 24 consonants. The phonology includes vowel harmony in both roots and suffixes, which is sensitive to rounded/unrounded (labial harmony) and front/back (palatal harmony), consonant harmony across suffixes, which is sensitive to voiced/unvoiced and front/back distinctions; and frequent devoicing of high vowels (see Comrie 1997 and Hahn 1991 for details). -

As a consequence,paremiology has beenenriched not only by studiesd1at investigate proverbs in traditional folk genres, such as the folk and fairy tale, but by "important studies of proverbs in modem literature, in psychologicaltesting, and in the various forms of massmedia such as newspapers,magazines, and advertisements" ( 118). One of the media in our technological society that has not been given much attention by paremiologists, however, is fllm.1 Perhaps this neglect is due to the medium's essentially visual technology, in which pictures speaklouder than words, which are, on the other hand, the essenceof the proverb. Acta Ethnographica Hungarica, 53 (2), pp. 451–456 (2008) DOI: 10.1556/AEthn.53.2008.2.16 COMMEMORATION MY MEMORIES OF ALAN DUNDES A belated necrology On Wednesday, March 30, 2005, at 4.30 p.m., Alan Dundes, the greatest American folklorist of the last half century collapsed in mid-sentence while holding his graduate seminar. He died in the ambulance. As the first reports of his death all noted: it was a typical and worthy death for the outstanding professor who loved to teach. Dundes was born in New York on September 8, 1934. He received his BA and then his MA in English philology at Yale (1955 and 1958), and continued his doctoral studies in Bloomington as a folklorist. His PhD dissertation (1962) was a monograph on the morphology of North American Indian tales. By then Dundes was already publishing regularly and everyone knew the very knowledgeable, dynamic and innovative young man with the brilliant tongue. He went almost immediately (in 1963) to the anthropology department of the University of California, Berkeley. He was an excellent lecturer and hundreds attended his lessons or waited for years for the chance to do so. He received awards as an outstanding professor and teacher, as well as the most coveted American and European folklore prizes. Although he did not like to be involved in associations, to organise congresses and journals, his activity in these areas was also substantial. He trav- elled a lot in his earlier years but later he was a guest lecturer and keynote speaker at conferences only within the United States (although he was difficult to reach). -

It is based on the argument that proverbs are an important part of cultural references, figurative, functional and formulaic language; thereby, they lend themselves well to enhancing communicative competence. This study investigates what EFL student-teachers think and feel about English proverb instruction, how they conceptualize proverbs, how they define their knowledge and use of English proverbs, and what they think about the extent to which their English teachers and coursebooks at high school taught English proverbs. In doing so, a questionnaire was designed and administered to freshman EFL student-teachers and semi-structured interviews were conducted with volunteers. The findings revealed that despite those student-teachers’ positive attitudes towards proverb instruction, they did not view their knowledge of English proverbs as well as the teaching of proverbs by their English teachers and coursebooks at high school sufficient enough. -

Winick ntroduction I During the 1990s, I observed several folklore forms at work among young medical professionals in New York City and Phila- delphia. Among them were the proverb “You can’t kill shit,” and its variants “Shit never dies” and “Scum never dies.” These prov- erbs proved fascinating not only in themselves but as a theoreti- cal window into the workings of occupational proverbs, both as a subset of the proverb genre and a subset of occupational folk cul- ture. On the one hand, the existence of such proverbs suggested that mainstream proverb theory needed some refi nement. -
Definition of a Proverb
Proverb Definitions Proverbs are popular sayings which contain advice or state a generally accepted truth. Because most proverbs have their origins in oral tradition, they are generally worded in such a way as to be remembered easily and tend to change little from generation to generation, so much so that sometimes their specific meaning is no longer relevant. For instance, the proverb “penny wise, pound foolish” is a holdover from when America was a British colony and used the pound as currency. Proverbs function as “folk wisdom,” general advice about how to act and live. And because they are folk wisdom, they are often strongly reflect the cultural values and physical environment from which they arise. For instance, island cultures such as Hawaii have proverbs about the sea, Eastern cultures have proverbs about elephants, and American proverbs, many collected and published by Benjamin Franklin, are about hard work bringing success. Proverbs are used to support arguments, to provide lessons and instruction, and to stress shared values. Proverbs are not clichés Clichés are widely used, even overused, phrases that are often metaphorical in nature. Clichés often have their origins in literature, television, or movies rather than in folk tradition. Some Common Features of Proverbs •Proverbs are passed down through time with little change in form. •Proverbs are often used metaphorically and it is in understanding their metaphorical nature that we can unravel their meaning. While “a stitch in time saves nine,” “don’t count your chickens before they’ve hatched,” and “don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater” are common proverbs, few of us stitch clothes, count chickens, or throw out bathwater.
