Olympiacos CFP v CF MATCH PRESS KIT Georgios Karaiskakis, Tuesday, 12 September 2006 - 20:45CET Group D - Matchday 1

After nine Greek titles in ten seasons, Olympiacos CFP are now entering their tenth successive year of UEFA Champions League football. However, while getting into the group stage has proved no problem, getting out of it is another matter altogether. Olympiacos have progressed beyond the first stage only once during the last decade – in the 1998/99 season when they went all the way to the quarter-finals.

's men open their Group D campaign against the top seeds Valencia CF but at least they have the benefit of home advantage – they have never won in ten visits to Spain. Even at the Georgios Karaiskaki stadium, however, Olympiacos know they face a tough start against Spain's third-placed team in 2005/06.

Attacking strength • Valencia coach Quique Sánchez Flores signed a trio of Spanish internationals over the summer in , Fernando Morientes and Joaquín Sánchez. The €8m Italian striker Francesco Tavano was another arrival, but it is Morientes who has made the headlines with an impressive start.

• The former Real CF and Liverpool FC front man struck the first as Valencia overturned a 1-0 first-leg deficit with a 3-0 home win over FC Salzburg in the third qualifying round. and Silva were the other scorers.

• Olympiacos strengthened considerably in defence during the summer, their recruitments including Michal Zewłakow, Abdeslam Ouaddou, Didier Domi and Julio César. Another new face is Ecuadorian forward Félix Borja.

Previous encounters • It finished honours even when the sides met in the 2000/01 UEFA Champions League group stage. Valencia won 2-1 at the Mestalla in September 2000 with Rubén Baraja among the scorers, and Olympiacos gained revenge with a 1-0 home victory thanks to Predrag Djordjević's penalty.

• That season Valencia ended up topping the group en route to a second successive final, but Olympiacos missed out on second place due to an inferior head-to-head record with .

• Overall, Olympiacos have won five of ten home matches against Spanish opposition, including a 2-1 triumph against Real Madrid CF last season. Valencia, meanwhile, have never tasted victory in three previous visits to .

Striking records • Valencia fans have unhappy memories of Olympiacos' , who struck a spectacular overhead-kick winner against them for on the final day of the 2000/01 Spanish season. The goal took Barcelona into the following season's UEFA Champions League at Valencia's expense.

• Valencia's Morientes has found the net against Olympiacos twice before. He was on target when Real Madrid beat the Greek team 5-1 in the group stage in October 1997 and repeated the trick when the sides met again at the Santiago Bernabéu at the same stage two years later.

• Their best European Cup showing came under the auspices of the 1998/99 UEFA Champions League. The club progressed to the last eight where they met Juventus of Italy. After scoring an away goal in a 2-1 defeat in Turin, a one-goal victory would have been enough at home for Olympiacos to progress. They duly took the lead early in the return only to concede in the 85th minute and Juve went through 3-2 on aggregate.

• The best individual campaign in any competition came when they reached the quarter-finals of the 1992/93 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, before losing 4-2 on aggregate to Club Atlético de Madrid.

UEFA club competition honours • No participations recorded in a UEFA club competition final.

UEFA club competition milestones • Valencia have a fine tradition in European competition and have twice gone close to winning the UEFA Champions League. In successive seasons - 1999/2000 and 2000/01 - they were beaten finalists against Real Madrid CF and FC Bayern München respectively. Despite losing 3-0 against their Spanish rivals they were only denied by penalty kicks a year later against Bayern after the match in Milan had ended 1-1 after 120 minutes.

• The club's greatest success on the European stage however has come in the other UEFA club competitions. In 1979/80 they were on the right side of a penalty shootout, defeating Arsenal FC 5-4 to win the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup after the teams had played out a goalless draw.

• Valencia's most recent triumph arrived in the UEFA Cup in 2003/04 where a Vicente Rodríguez penalty and a goal from Mista helped them lift the trophy against in Gothenburg.

UEFA club competition honours • UEFA Cup Winners' Cup: 1979/80 • UEFA Cup: 2003/04 • UEFA Super Cup: 1980, 2004 • UEFA Intertoto Cup: 1998

2005/06 season Domestic record: Valencia missed out on an automatic place in the group stage of this season's UEFA Champions League after a final day defeat against CA Osasuna meant that they finished third in the Primera División standings, a point behind Real Madrid.

European record: Following a poor domestic season, by their high standards, in 2004/05 Valencia had to rely on the UEFA Intertoto Cup to qualify for the UEFA Cup. Victories against KAA Gent and Roda JC set-up a final meeting with Hamburger SV but the German club denied them with a 1-0 victory over two legs.

Match facts

Group D

• Aside from Olympiacos and Valencia, AS Roma and FC Shakhtar Donetsk meet in Rome on Matchday 1. Valencia and Olympiacos are scheduled to do battle again in Spain on Matchday 5 (22 November), when Shakhtar will play host to Roma. On Matchday 2 (27 September), Olympiacos travel to Shakhtar while Valencia receive Roma, with those games being reversed on Matchday 6 (5 December). Valencia take on Shakhtar on Matchdays 3 (18 October) and 4 (31 October) in Spain and Ukraine respectively, the same nights as Olympiacos meet Roma at home and then away.

Olympiacos

• Predrag Djordjević is one match away from his 50th appearance in the UEFA Champions League, while Giorgios Anatolakis needs two more games to reach his half-century. While Djordjević has scored nine goals, Anatolakis has never found the net in Europe's premier club competition.

• The most experienced player in the squad is Rivaldo, who has played 67 times in the UEFA Champions League, scoring 27 goals.

• Other than Rivaldo, no other player in the Olympiacos squad has yet to hit double figures for goals in the UEFA Champions League.

• Grigoris Georgatos needs one more appearance for 50 in UEFA club competition, while Michalis Konstantinou is four games away from the same mark.

• Olympiacos made it three league wins in three on Saturday as they beat FC PAOK 2-0 at home to remain the only team in Greece with a 100 per cent record. The victory was revenge for the defeat in this fixture last season, Olympiacos's only home reverse in the campaign. Konstantinou struck the first in the seventh minute before in-form Nery Alberto Castillo doubled the lead with a lobbed effort in the 29th minute. PAOK pushed on strongly in the second half but failed to find a way back into the contest.

• Castillo had struck a hat-trick in the 3-0 win at Panionios NFC on 27 August, and is leading the scoring charts with four goals.

• Trond Sollied said: "We played an excellent first half on a pitch that was in bad condition. We wanted to get revenge for ourselves from last season's defeat and that gave us extra motivation. It's the first match in a series of hard encounters in our schedule. At half-time, I told my players to keep their concentration. However, with the 2-0 scoreline, it was only natural that they had their mind on the encounter against Valencia. I will be very satisfied if on Tuesday we manage not to concede goals and at the same time score."

• Apart from long-term injury victim Erol Bulut, not due back until 2007, Sollied was without the injured Georgatos, who is rated extremely doubtful to face Valencia, along with Michalis Kapsis and Marco Né, who are proceeding with their recovery programme. Rivaldo has recovered from a knee injury, but he was rested at the weekend ahead of the Valencia encounter. Didier Domi returned to the side after serving a suspension and played on the left.

• Olympiacos are ten goals away from reaching the 3.000-mark in the Greek league, a mark only Panathinaikos FC have already passed. They need 31 victories to make it 1,000 in the league.

• Olympiacos signed seven foreign players during the summer . The main concern was to bolster their defence and they brought goalkeeper Tomislav Butina and the defenders Michał Żewłakow, Abdeslam Ouaddou, Domi and César. They also signed midfielder Marco Né and striker

Félix Borja. However, they lost one of the team’s pillars of last season, the Ivory Coast defensive midfielder Yaya Touré, who signed for AS FC.

• Rivaldo has stated once more that this will be his last season at Olympiacos – and in Europe – and then he will return to Brazil: "It's my last season here and I really want us to have an excellent run in the UEFA Champions League," he said on Thursday after meeting his compatriot Pelé, who was on a visit to Greece.

• Five players were on international duty last week. , Georgios Anatolakis and Pantelis Kafes travelled with Greece to Moldova, where the European champions won 1-0 on 2 September. Nikopolidis played the entire 90 minutes, Anatolakis came as substitute in the last five minutes, while Kafes remained on the substitute's bench.

• Ioannis Okkas played all 90 minutes for in their 6-1 defeat by Slovakia on the same day. Żewłakow did not miss a minute of Poland’s two home encounters on 2 and 6 September. On Saturday they lost 3-1 to Finland, while on Wednesday they drew 1-1 with Serbia.

• Olympiacos begin their participation in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League with two major goals. First, to record their first away victory, as they have no wins, five draws and 23 defeats in the nine seasons they have participated in the competition. Second, to get past the group stage – they have not done so since 1998/99, when they reached the quarter-finals of the competition and were eliminated by Juventus.

• The tickets for the home match against Valencia were sold out in just a few hours on Thursday.

Valencia

• Mario Regueiro turns 28 on Wednesday, five days before Jorge López reaches the same milestone.

• Fernando Morientes, on 75 games and 27 goals in the UEFA Champions League, needs six more appearances for 100 overall in UEFA club competition.

• Eleven players featured in both matches in the third qualifying round against FC Salzburg. They are: Cañizares, David Navarro, Raúl Albiol, , , , Vicente, David Villa, Morientes, Miguel Ángel Angulo and David Silva.

• Joaquín will miss the club's first two games in the group stage, against Olympiacos and AS Roma, as he carries forward a two-match suspension picked up last season with Balompié.

• In an action-packed encounter at the Vicente Calderón stadium on Saturday evening, Valencia maintained their 100 per cent start to the season with a 1-0 victory over Club Atlético de Madrid. Villa scored the only goal of the game after just seven minutes. Moretti was sent off for the visitors in the 66th minute, but the numbers were soon equal again as received a red card ten minutes later.

• Quique Sánchez Flores said: "What changed the game was taking the lead early on. The game became simpler after that and we able to defend that lead. In the first 30 minutes we played as I wanted and did not allow their forwards any space. We did not create many chances ourselves, but the ones we did were very good."

• Valencia had a busy summer in the transfer market. Joaquín was signed from Betis, Morientes returned to Spain after two seasons at Liverpool FC, Asier del Horno also came back after one year at Chelsea FC, Francesco Tavano was signed from Empoli FC. Jaime Gavilán rejoined the club after a year on loan at CF as did Silva after a season on loan at RC Celta de .

Their third warm-up match resulted in another victory as they beat Charlton Athletic FC 3-1, before playing a dress rehearsal for the UEFA Champions League encounter against AS Roma in the Trofeo Naranja in Mestalla. Silva and Albelda both scored in a 2-0 victory.

• Sánchez Flores’s side opened the league season on 26 August with a 2-1 home victory against Betis. Morientes scored the first league goal before former player Xisco levelled for the visitors. Just after the hour mark though, Raúl Albiol struck the winning goal to give his side a winning start to the campaign.

• Joaquín was left out of the Valencia squad at the weekend for the victory against Atlético as he only began training with his new team-mates last week.

• Albelda is also out of the game against Olympiacos after fracturing his cheekbone during Spain's 3-2 defeat by Northern Ireland on 6 September, when Villa scored Spain's second goal. Albelda underwent minor surgery in Madrid after the match.

UEFA information

UEFA and Europe's major clubs ended two days of European Club Forum discussions last Wednesday, with the pledge to seek common ground and unity. The talks focused among other things, on the future structure of UEFA's club competitions, the relationship between UEFA and the clubs, stadium matters and commercial matters related to the European club competitions. UEFA's professional football director Giorgio Marchetti said: "I would welcome this meeting as the dawning of a new period of positive relations with the clubs."

Crucial advice to help clubs tackle racism on and off the pitch is the focal point of a new publication produced on UEFA's behalf by its partner, the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network. Tackling Racism in Club Football - A Guide For Clubs has been issued initially in English to herald the start of the new UEFA club competition season and is the latest step in the concerted campaign being waged to rid the game of racism and discrimination.

UEFA has asked referees to clamp down on dissent after the UEFA Referees' Committee, together with top officials, discussed various refereeing issues at their fourth annual gathering. Following the outcome of the discussions in Nyon a fortnight ago, UEFA wants to emphasise that it has asked match officials to take immediate action by cautioning players in the case of the following offences: waving of an imaginary card to have an opponent booked; crowding around the referee, when at least one player should be cautioned and not only the initiator; and dissent by gesture or running towards to referee.

UEFA has completed three new media rights agreements covering China guaranteeing what the European body says will be "an unprecedented breadth and quality of coverage" of European football's major club competition. CCTV, China's free to air national broadcaster which is present in 350 million television homes, will show extensive highlights of each match night for the next three seasons. UEFA's long-term partner across Asia, ESPN Star, will show more than 45 matches live in China per season as well as delayed matches, highlights and magazine programmes, while Sina.com, China's leading internet portal with 60 million page views per day, will show delayed match coverage and establish its own UEFA Champions League mobile service.

UEFA has paid tribute to the late Giacinto Facchetti, the FC Internazionale Milano president who died aged 64 last Monday after a battle with cancer. Facchetti, who as a player with Inter twice won the European Champion Clubs' Cup. He was a valued part of the UEFA family, having served the UEFA Fair Play Committee and UEFA's Technical Development Committee. Back in March, UEFA presented Facchetti with a Champions of Europe award amid celebrations to mark 50 years of European Cup finals. Andy Roxburgh, the UEFA technical director. "He was a fantastic person – he was an absolute gentleman." As a mark of respect, Inter have retired Facchetti's No3 shirt, with current player Nicolás Burdisso switching to No16.

Head coach profiles

Trond Sollied Date of birth: 29 April 1959 Nationality: Norwegian Coaching career: FK Bodø/Glimt, Rosenborg BK, KAA Gent, Club Brugge KV, Olympiacos CFP

Trond Sollied is a Norwegian coach with the happy knack of winning titles in whatever country he has worked in. He took over at Olympiacos CFP in the summer of 2005 after a particularly successful spell with Club Brugge KV and continued his winning ways in Athens, leading Olympiacos to the league and cup double in his first season in charge.

Sollied enjoyed a relatively successful playing career, turning out for various clubs including Vålerenga IF, Rosenborg BK and FK Bodø/Glimt as well as winning 15 caps and scoring once for . He began his coaching career at Bodø/Glimt in 1992 and, as player-coach, he led them to a Norwegian first division title, a second-placed finish in the top flight and third place in 1995. He was dismissed in 1996 after a dispute with the club's board and joined Rosenborg as assistant coach to . Rosenborg won the title that year and again in 1998 after Sollied had replaced Eggen as coach.

He subsequently moved to and after a brief spell at KAA Gent joined Club Brugge KV in the summer of 2000. His coaching philosophy of a physical approach and strong team spirit proved successful with two Belgian league titles in 2003 and 2005 and two cup successes in 2002 and 2004. He left the Belgian club in somewhat acrimonious circumstances in June 2005 before promptly taking over at Olympiacos. Despite a successful first season on the domestic front, Olympiacos were unable to make an impression in the UEFA Champions League.

Quique Sánchez Flores Date of birth: 2 February, 1965 Nationality: Spanish Playing career: Valencia CF, Real Madrid CF, Real Zaragoza Coaching career: Real Madrid CF (youth coach), Getafe CF, Valencia CF

Quique Sánchez Flores promised to use Rafael Benítez's blueprint to guide Valencia CF back to the top when he took over at the Mestalla in summer 2005. Having spent nine years there as a player between 1986 and 1994, he had been a popular choice to replace and soon set about further ingratiating himself to the Valencia fans. Filling the gaps in a leaky defence certainly helped but it was the signing of David Villa from Real Zaragoza that had the biggest impact, the striker scoring 25 goals in 37 league games as the side finished third.

It was enough to secure a UEFA Champions League place after a rare season in the European wilderness for Valencia. Sánchez Flores continued to make his mark in summer 2006, allowing former stars Pablo Aimar and Mista to depart, and further fulfilling the role of a young, ambitious coach that had convinced the club to bring him on board 12 months earlier.

He represented something of a risk for the side after only turning his hand to coaching in 2003 but Sánchez Flores has already enjoyed success, leading Real Madrid CF to the youth title before moving across the city to newly-promoted senior side Getafe CF who enjoyed an impressive campaign. It further vindicated his decision to give up a career as a media pundit and having enjoyed some success as a player at Valencia, Madrid and Real Zaragoza and made 15 international appearances for Spain, Sánchez Flores could make waves as a coach.

A regular in UEFA club competition since 2001, he also had the honour of taking charge of the 2004 UEFA Super Cup between FC Porto and Valencia CF.

As well as the 2005/06 final, Hauge also took charge of three group-stage matches and two matches in the knockout phase. At home, he has been regarded as one of his nation’s shining lights since the Norwegian FA Cup final between FK Bodø/Glimt and Tromsø IL in October 1996. Seven years later, he assumed control of his second domestic cup final between Bodø/Glimt and Rosenborg BK before being asked to be the man in the middle for the Ukrainian Cup final in May 2005. He was also awarded the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship final in the Netherlands, when Argentina overcame Nigeria.

Competition information

UEFA's most prestigious club competition was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the 1955/56 season, before its revamping as the UEFA Champions League in 1992.

• Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced that the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA club competitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from season 2006/07, at least four places on this list will be reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubs from within the same association of the said club.

The 'B' list will also continue to exist - involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the club for two seasons. In 2007/08, the number of locally-trained players in a squad will increase to six before rising to eight in 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained.

A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the club between the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at least three seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21.

UEFA is concerned some clubs are not training enough of their own players, but simply taking them from elsewhere. The proposed measures have the objective of creating a better balance in domestic competitions, preventing clubs from simply 'hoarding' players in squads and creating a system whereby locally-trained players would be given a greater opportunity to play regularly in club sides - ensuring a large reservoir of talent for national teams as a consequence.

• Financial information: UEFA says the estimated budgeted income for the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League is €750m – higher than the 2005/06 campaign revenue which amounted to CHF943m (approx. €610m).

Under the competition regulations, 75 per cent of the total revenue received from television and commercial contracts concluded by UEFA, up to a maximum of €530m will go to the 32 clubs taking part in the group stage of Europe's premier club competition. The remaining 25 per cent is earmarked for European football and remains with UEFA to cover organisational and administrative costs, as well as for solidarity payments to associations, clubs and leagues.

It is also stipulated that participating clubs will receive 82 per cent of any revenue received from the same stream in excess of € 530m, with the remaining 18 per cent allocated to UEFA for European football. In addition, 50 per cent of the revenue received from new media contracts concluded by UEFA will also be available for distribution to the clubs, and the remaining 50 per cent will be allocated to the above-mentioned European football portion/quota.

The gross income for 2006/07 is estimated at €750m, and according to projections, will be made up of € 743.3m from TV and commercial contracts and €6.7m from new media contracts.

The fixed amount to the clubs is €276.6m. Each of the 32 clubs in the group stage will receive a starting bonus of €2m. In addition, they will receive a match bonus of €400,000 per match. Performance bonuses will amount to €600,000 for a win and €300,000 for a draw in the group stage. The 16 teams playing in the first knockout round will receive €2.2m, the eight quarter-finalists €2.5m each and the four semi-finalists €3m each. The UEFA Champions League winners will receive €7m, and the runners-up €4m.

This means that a total minimum amount of €4.4m per club is guaranteed for the group stage. A club could receive, at best, up to €22.7m, not counting the market pool share and gate receipts.

The remaining €270.4m will be distributed according to the proportional value of each TV market represented by the clubs taking part in the UEFA Champions League, and to be split among the number of teams – four, three, two or one – participating from a given association.

• Format: The UEFA Champions League group stage draw in Monaco on 24 August saw the 32 teams divided into eight groups of four. Clubs from the same association could not be drawn into the same group. Each club plays one home and one away match against each other club in its group. Three points are awarded for a win, one point for a draw and no points for a defeat. If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings. a) higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the teams in question; b) superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams in question; c) higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matches played among the teams in question; d) superior goal difference from all group matches played; e) higher number of goals scored; f) higher number of coefficient points accumulated by the club in question as well as its association, over the previous five seasons.

The eight group-winners and eight runners-up of the group stage qualify for the first knockout round, to be played over two legs on 20 February and 7 March 2007. The clubs that finish this stage in third position in their group move into the round of 32 of the UEFA Cup. The clubs that finish this stage in fourth position in their group are eliminated from UEFA club competition for the season.
