Most of the research news in this number is derived from those questionnaires that most of you filled out (er, that is. completed. Mick) last year. Because of the long delay some of this information may now be out of date. but at least everyone can see what others are doing research and otherwise. The production of a new Sphecos Directory based on those questionnaires is not in the near future. I'm sorry, but there are only so many hours in the day and Terry works for me only two months out of the year. If anyone out there has access to a computer and would like to volunteer to enter information from the questionnaires and produce a new directory please contact me. Ron McGinley has a beautiful d-Base m software program that he had developed for the Melissa Directory that can be used very effectively for this chore and which I can probably make available to a volunteer with an IBM clone. -

All rights reserved Variation in Reproductive Strategy of the Tropical Paper Wasp, Ropalidiafasciata (Hymenoptera: Vespidae), in Okinawa in Relation to Island Environmental Conditions 1 YOSIAKI ITo 2 ABSTRACT: The tropical paper wasp, Ropalidia (Icariola) fasciata (F.), nests on leaves of gramineous plants (Miscanthus sinensis Andus. and sugarcane) in Okinawa, where there are frequent, strong typhoons. In Taiwan and Java, where the effects of typhoons are less severe, most nests are on tree twigs. A similar difference is seen in nests of Ropalidia (I) marginata (Lepeletier) in the Northern Mariana Islands and in India. Okinawan R. fasciata also exhibits quite flexible social behavior, low frequency of intranidal dominance behavior, construction of satellite and multiple-comb nests, absconding swarming, and initiation and development of nests in late autumn. Study of the divergence of social habits in eusocial wasps on Pacific Islands will enhance our under standing of social evolution in insects. Colonies of the wasp Mischocyttarus cassununga (von Ihering, 1903) are easily found in urban areas. However, in spite of the massive presence of this species in cities, little is known about its nesting habits, colony success and productivity. The present study aimed at answering the following questions: What are the substrates used for nesting by M. cassununga? What is the main foundation strategy adopted by M. cassununga in urban areas: a solitary female or associative foundation? Is there a relationship between foundation strategies and colony success? Is the total number of cells per nest related to the number of adults produced? The study was conducted in Juiz de Fora, southeastern Brazil, from December 2006 to November 2007. Nesting in man-made substrata seems to be a common strategy in M. cassununga (90.9%), with preference for nest building with a horizontal comb facing north. The colonies were established mainly by groups of foundresses (67.6%), with a success of 84%. -

Status, Trends and Red Listing – Terrestrial and Fresh Water Insects Sub Group Report – August 2014 1 Appendix 9: Insects Sub-group Report HONG KONG TERRESTRIAL AND FRESHWATER INSECTS STATUS, TRENDS, RED LISTING & RECOMMENDATIONS AUGUST 2014 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Hong Kong insect biodiversity is at present poorly known, despite the fact that this is the most diverse group of multicellular organisms on the planet. Our knowledge of the status of the local insect fauna is limited to a few insect taxonomic groups (butterflies & moths, dragonflies & damselflies, mayflies, caddisflies, ants, partially beetles, partially aculeate wasp taxa)and in consequence only a few insect taxa have been assessed locally. Knowledge of population trends is minimal. However, over 2400 species of moth, 240 butterflies, 115 dragonflies & damselflies, 180 ants, 70 mosquitoes, 40 termites, and over 150 aculeate Wasps have been recorded locally, as well as hundreds of beetles and smaller numbers of mayflies, caddisflies and stick insects. Some of these insects are endemic to Hong Kong and many species either entirely new to science or to the territory are discovered every year. An assessment conducted by the authors on a fraction of these Hong Kong species has revealed that 29 out of 46 moths , eight out of 10 aculeate wasps and three out of 104 dragonflies assessed qualified for threatened status (Critically Endangered, Endangered and Vulnerable) as defined by IUCN. The ecology of these insects is diverse and understanding this is important to conserving the biota as a whole. A particular need is to study those that perform important known ecological services such as pollination, seed dispersal, nutrient recycling and soil turnover, and to gain a better understanding of their functional role within food webs.
