Cover Illustrations: The front cover shows the art of Fionn O'Dubhghaill, Gerard Nash and Alan Keane who all achieved A grades in the Junior and Leaving Certificate exams in 2007. The Church Domes and patterns arecollaborativeworks by 2nd Year. Editorial This is the first annual in some years to be published during the following academic year. This is an achievement but one which should be possible every year. The School Management and the Editorial team have put in place measures to ensure there is not such a lapse in future. As the school and its activities continue to grow, it is vital to keep a record of activities and developments each year. Every student should be able to look at a bookshelf and see there, one, six or even eleven years recorded. St. Mary’s has its focuses, there are rugby heroes and academic successes but the school places a great deal of pride in having something for everyone.

Each year the activities list gets a little bit longer. In this annual you will read about the extension of the Basketball activities to all years in the school. You will see photographs from the first Music Department Christmas Concert complete with duelling banjos. St. Mary’s is now a phase one school for the introduction of Technology as a Leaving Certificate subject. We have also placed extra emphasis on extracurricular activities like the Scouts and the Young Scientists.

There are of course the old reliable items: success and disappointments on the rugby and cricket fields and the cycle of the terms and seasons. The editorial team has worked hard to ensure all of the achievements and activities of the students have been recorded and that everyone has been included. It is also down to the whole St. Mary’s community to contribute to the Annual. We rely on the pictures of the victories on rainy, far flung rugby pitches and reports of the first smack of leather on willow in the summer term. For everyone to be included as they should be, we need the efforts of as many as possible.

This year saw the retirement of Kevin Lewis from the Senior School. His untiring work with past and present students is well known. He has left behind a wonderful careers programme and an office packed with resources to assist everyone from the aspiring astronaut to zoologist. The fact that so many years of past students still treat him as their career mentor is the best compliment that can be paid to him.

The Junior School bade farewell to Mary O’Sullivan who left after 27 years of teaching 5th Class. This Editor remembers well her ability to hear two boys read at once and be able to correct them both on pronunciation and punctuation.

This is the first time that readers will see reference to the Boards of Management in the College. They have been in existence since September 2004 and have a key role in the development of the College. Under their management the Junior School will soon see new computer facilities and interactive white boards in the class rooms. Another development featured is the Parents’ Association – which has increased co-operation and communication between families and the College like never before.

In short 2006–2007 was another busy year for the College. We hope that you enjoy looking back over it. As always these memories have more value in the years to come. Whatever moves you make in life, and may they always be successful ones, always make sure you know where your Annuals are.

The production of this Annual would not have been possible without the help of many staff, students (past and present), scout leaders, games coaches and families. The Editorial Team would like to give special thanks to Fr. Flavin, Clive Byrne, Liam Naughton, Brian Wall, Colm Sweeney, Denis Murphy, Isabelle Kelly, Pauline Fox, Georgina Collins, Mary O’Donnell, Marian Fitzpatrick and Ray Sloan.

JOHN NISBET and LEONIE BLACKBURN Editors, 2007 The Arms of the College

SYMBOLISM The Escutcheon is quartered. On the right base (as you observe it) there is the unchangeable five point silver star with golden rays, symbolic of fidelity to its purpose of shedding light and guidance in the pursuit of Him Who enlightens every man and Who is the “Bright and Morning Star”. (Apoc XXII. 16).

The upper right bears the Cross, the emblem of trials and difficulties. It is in gold on a silver ground, symbolic of the precious outcome of trials well borne. These two symbols combine to produce the College motto: “Fidelitas in Arduis” (Fidelity in Difficulties).

On the upper left quarter there is the Dove in silver, symbolic of the Holy Ghost, from which descend seven golden rays, the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit, essential in the practice of “Fidelitas in Arduis”.

The left base bears a red heart transfixed with a sword and encircled with golden roses. This is symbolic of the Holy Heart of Mary, suffering - the supreme purely human type of “Fidelitas in Arduis”. The golden roses symbolise the reward that comes from such fidelity.

HERALDIC DESCRIPTION On the Sinister base, on a ground Azure, a five point star, Argent, with emanating rays, Or. on the upper Sinsiter, a Cross, Or; on a ground Argent.
