(Photo courtesty of Sportsfile) *Academic Year: It is 118 years since the College opened but it was closed for 10 years during the last century. Editorial School life proceeded smoothly in 2007-2008 and at first glance the items recorded for the year all seem very familiar. One could almost think one school year is much like the other: the events run their course and it is just the faces, names and personalities that differ. But not so this year in St. Mary’s; this was a year of many changes and a little more excitement than one could bear on the rugby field. It began with a complete renovation of the Senior school heating system, something that the students and teachers alike were very happy about when the cold days came. Other improvements included the addition of Laptops – trundled about on trollies to provide an ad hoc but very versatile computer room for use by the Junior School and Senior School students. Miraculous interactive white boards also arrived in a number of classrooms and proved to be a great success. A less technical but very practical addition came in the form of new changing rooms for the Junior School rugby players. All of these changes had only settled into our subconscious when the Senior Cup rugby campaign began. The team would take us all the way to the final in the RDS via enough nail-biting moments and elating successes to keep story tellers in business for years. Around this time too the leadership of the Senior School changed with the Principal Clive Byrne being seconded to the National Association of Principals and Deputy Principals. He was succeeded by his Deputy, Liam Naughton (the first past-pupil to become Principal) and Denis Murphy became Deputy Principal. The transition was smooth and students soon got used to the new faces behind old doors. Then, at the end of the year, the senior school bade farewell to three very long serving teachers; Richie Hughes, Michael Leonard and Sean McCarthy. Few can claim to have imparted as much knowledge of literature, language and indeed of life than these three men. Between them they gave over 100 years of service to St Mary’s – and in appreciation of their inestimable contribution to the school we have dedicated this annual to them. Your Editors were also keen that the College Annual should be a part of the defining changes taking place within the school – and so, for the first time the publication is printed in full colour. We have also delivered the volume to you, the reader, within the first-term of the following Academic Year – a time-frame which we think is desirable and, more importantly, maintainable. Another editorial decision taken was to unify the Staff Lists for the Junior and Senior Schools and the College Community as a whole. We have also included the Board Members of both Schools on these pages. There are so many links between the two Schools that it seems artificial to separate them and much more collegial to put them all together. So, here it is again, the St. Mary’s College Annual – a record of what happened in the school lives of nearly eight hundred students in 2007-2008. No doubt some matters of importance have been missed and/or some names have been incorrectly assigned and for that we apologise and will do our best to correct the situation in future years. More importantly though, there is a lot of St. Mary’s life documented here and our thanks to everyone who helped us to put names to faces, took photographs, ran events, chased down articles, wrote reports, typed lists, met with us and contributed and supported us in our effort. We extend a really sincere thank you to each and everyone who helped with this particular edition and if you have a story, or a photograph, or an idea for next year’s Annual – please do just get in touch!

JOHN NISBET and LEONIE BLACKBURN Editors, 2008 The Arms of the College

SYMBOLISM The Escutcheon is quartered. On the right base (as you observe it) there is the unchangeable five point silver star with golden rays, symbolic of fidelity to its purpose of shedding light and guidance in the pursuit of Him Who enlightens every man and Who is the “Bright and Morning Star”. (Apoc XXII. 16).

The upper right bears the Cross, the emblem of trials and difficulties. It is in gold on a silver ground, symbolic of the precious outcome of trials well borne. These two symbols combine to produce the College motto: “Fidelitas in Arduis” (Fidelity in Difficulties).

On the upper left quarter there is the Dove in silver, symbolic of the Holy Ghost, from which descend seven golden rays, the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit, essential in the practice of “Fidelitas in Arduis”.

The left base bears a red heart transfixed with a sword and encircled with golden roses. This is symbolic of the Holy Heart of Mary, suffering - the supreme purely human type of “Fidelitas in Arduis”. The golden roses symbolise the reward that comes from such fidelity.

HERALDIC DESCRIPTION On the Sinister base, on a ground Azure, a five point star, Argent, with emanating rays, Or. on the upper Sinsiter, a Cross, Or; on a ground Argent. I certainly feel very privileged to have had the opportunity. The intensity of training, not to mention the matches! There were only a few of us who made the step up to Seniors training and the training was very hard. But we couldn’t have asked for a better group of lads to help us. The 5th and 6th Years took us in, included us in everything they could, and made us feel welcome and part of the team. SENIOR RUGBY On the rugby front, the first fifteen started the season very well with qualification for the later stages of the Leddin Leinster Senior Cup. Unfortunately, a poor start was made to the AIB All-Ireland League with several early losses, some by only the narrowest of margins. The period before Christmas saw the team play its best rugby with some very impressive victories. Unfortunately, the team suffered very badly from injuries, regularly losing key players. Despite its best endeavours, the team did not sustain its pre-Christmas performance levels and finished ninth in the League. We reached the final of the Leinster Senior Cup but were beaten in the final by a strong Clontarf side. Congratulations to Ms. Neylan and the boys from Forms 3, 4 & 5 on winning 1st prize in the Junior Schools Choir Competition of the Feis Ceol held in the RDS, on March 3rd 2008.

St. Mary’s has a long history of choral singing but it has been a long number of years since we have achieved acclaim such as this. The judges were very complimentary about the performance and described it as “an extremely high standard” The choir sang “Over the Rainbow” and “Nymphs and Sheperds”. Well done boys – you have done us proud.
