OUR FAMILY BRINGS NEW MEANING TO THE PHRASE MARCH MADNESS. For us, it’s birthday month – or rather, birthday week. For years, Emil got to celebrate his March 30th birthday alone. Then the kids blazed onto the scene,O with Christina claiming the 29th and Matt pulling up the rear on the 31st. It’s the perfect trifecta, but it’s made for some busy times! Over the years, Emil’s taken a back seat to first birthdays, princess parties and the never-ending squeal of all-night slumber parties. He’s been a good sport, making mountains of chocolate chip pancakes, sliding down plastic slides at the local play place and wielding a glowing baton at laser tag. Eventually, we always get to his birthday dinner (sushi) but he’s mostly given the time to our children. With the kids’ birthdays close together, we were able to get away with joint birthday parties for a few years. As they got older, it became impossible to merge the demands of princess parties with dinosaurs and High School Musical 3 with Lightning McQueen. We’ve always kept the family party to one big birthday-palooza, but every year, I bake them each a separate cake. It’s tradition: one strawberry shortcake, one red velvet cake and one lemon meringue pie. Sure, it would be easy to order one big sheet cake emblazoned with all three names and call it a day. For me, it’s about more than just cake. For one, I like to bake. But more importantly, a few hours in the kitchen is my small way of making the celebration special for each of them. I remember my own birthday cakes because my mom always made me my favourite: chocolate cake with chocolate icing and coloured sprinkles. For me, a birthday cake shows that someone made Fine Flooring . Art Work . Area Rugs an effort just for you. The cake is the centrepiece, surrounded by loved Broadloom . Home Accessories . STORY CATALINA MARGULIS PHOTOGRAPHY JASON HARTOG

When Marisa Lupo and Luisa Maringola of Lumar Interiors were hired to take a newer build from cool to cosy, they were up for the challenge. “The house was sort of sterile, very white Wand grey,” recalls Marisa. “The family had come from a house that was much warmer. They’re a busy couple, and they still wanted to have that warmth, so they hired us to decorate and furnish the rooms.” Victoria and Michael Jurincic purchased the two-year-old home just three kilometres away from their previous Richmond Hill home, which they had outgrown. “We loved the neighbourhood,” Victoria says of their former home, which was located on the east side of Bathurst. “The area is convenient – there’s shopping, food, you name it.” They considered tearing down their old Georgian home, but in the end, chose to look for a home in the area that was ready to move into. “We started down the , got an architect and everything, but it was stressful dealing with the site plan and city,” recalls Victoria. ROOM TO Last January, they put their house back on the market, sold it and bought their new home, all in 24 hours. “It was one of three houses on the street we were looking at,” says Victoria. “It had customized features, some wainscotting, and the kitchen was grow redone. It’s more suited to our family from a layout perspective.” While their new home offers more space Layered design brings warmth to a for the family – which includes daughter Maia, It’s all in the details, and the family room 15, and son Matthew, 13 – it also had more spacious, modern home. doesn’t disappoint with a myriad of layers square footage than they could furnish using and textures. Lumar Interiors handled the design and décor of the kitchen, living room, dining room, three bedrooms, family room and study. The project started last July, the family moved in in late August, and most of the furnishings arrived in September. “Most of the time we don’t purchase retail,” says Marisa. “We do everything custom or order directly from suppliers, so it can take weeks from the time of order to arrive.” Since the house was freshly painted a soft white colour, the designers – led by Marisa and senior designer Cindy Grande – decided to leave it but added an accent wall. “We did this charcoal navy wall in the family room that accented the beautiful windows in that room and warmed it up,” says Marisa. The first room the designers tackled was the kitchen. “The home had chrome and crystal – not Victoria and Michael’s style at all, which is more down-to-earth and casual. We changed the blingy light fixtures and swapped them out for wrought-iron light fixtures and added custom chairs around the island to warm it up,” says Marisa. The two-storey family room was next. “We did window treatments from the second storey down with a pattern to add a little activity to the blank walls,” says Marisa. “Then we painted the wall around the fireplace and the windows in charcoal blue, which really grounds the room and sets off the fireplace and the beautiful windows.” Continued on page 34

Grey sofas, a charcoal carpet, a leather chair and a wood light fixture complete the look. “Even though the greys sound cold, it’s a very warm room thanks to the cognac leather, ceramic lamps and wooden chandelier. It’s the final touches that bring a room to life,” Marisa says. Perfect for family get-togethers, the dining room features an extra-long table that seats 10 to 12 people. It’s a wonderful space!” Continued on page 36

For an interviewer, he’s golden – a devil for dishin’ on the details with his fluid style of speaking. It’s clear why he’s a regular guest on The Marilyn Denis Show. “When I talk to young designers starting out, I tell them, ‘You have to care about every single aspect in your design, and it’s up to you to dictate the details,’ ” says Ramsin. An obsession with beautiful details is also what draws customers, like the owner of this home, to Khachi Design Group. “My husband and I interviewed a number of designers, but Ramsin resonated. I had seen his work, knew his reputation and love his cool design twists – they’re beautiful,” says the homeowner. Impressed by Andrea’s work, author and homeowner Shannon Duffy later reached out to the designer to bring some of her decorating savvy to her new home when she moved into a Lakeshore townhouse condo in Toronto. Initially only hired to change the green wall colour, Andrea replaced the tired colour palette and suggested some bold, customized changes that better suited the homeowner’s glamourous style. “The project became a whole-house redesign that took the home from cottage to penthouse,” says Andrea. The two-storey, 2,500 sq. ft. property boasts an 800 sq. ft. terrace and is built at the base of a luxury condo building, with a front door that leads down to Lake Ontario. Andrea got to work with her design team Samantha DeZotti, Krystal Hopper and Sharon Cornwall dressing the home up with black, bejeweled finishes that better represented the owner’s taste for luxury.
