Thesis in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the M.A. degree, Hebrew University of Jerusalem (2015). Abstract: This thesis traces the ways in which apartheid as a signifier had been mobilized by Zionist and anti-Zionist conversations in the 1950s-1970s, transforming the postcolonial organization of urban space. I initiate my historiographic narrative by viewing how apartheid was circulated as a trope during Israel’s early state-building years, shaping the ways in which Zionist spatial control could be discussed. I then move from mobilizations of apartheid as a trope to its use as a mode of analysis, presenting the case of how Palestinian discourses at the UN in the mid-60s had leveraged apartheid both as an analogical trope and as a human rights based analysis geared at international condemnations of Israel. Within this framework, I argue that early Palestinian analyses of Zionism as a style of apartheid were paradoxically limited in their capacities to render extreme segregation in Israel-Palestine legible. Finally, I posit that in the civil rights era, the relation between apartheid and events in Israel-Palestine was re-articulated by urban communities that were themselves struggling against extreme sociospatial control.

  • Van Halen – a Different Kind of Truth
Van Halen – A Different Kind Of Truth A Different Kind Of Truth is Van Halen’s twelfth studio album, and their first in fourteen years. This album marks the recording reunion of Eddie and Alex Van Halen with original singer/front man David Lee Roth. Roth was the singer in Van Halen from 1974‐1985, and was replaced by Sammy Hagar when the band softened their hard rock sound into a more commercial pop rock sound in the mid‐1980s. Roth recorded two songs with Van Halen in 1996 for a greatest hits album released when Hagar left the band, and expectations were high that he would return for a new album, but it didn’t work out that way. Instead, Extreme singer Gary Cherone joined Van Halen, and they recorded one weak album together. Touring reunions with both Hagar and Roth followed the departure of Cherone in 1999, but there was no new music recorded. There was much debate whether there would ever be another Van Halen album, as Eddie Van Halen was often seen drunk in public during his separation and after his divorce from actress Valerie Bertinelli. Furthermore, a YouTube video surfaced of Eddie, appearing to be near death, sitting in with a party band playing a Tommy Bolin song, and his guitar playing was pathetic. Eddie appeared unhealthy due to suspected drug use, and the second half of a tour was cancelled in 2008 due to Eddie’s poor health. This is the much abbreviated “CliffsNotes” version of the Van Halen soap opera, which effectively reduced one of the most popular rock bands in history to a joke.

  • Laughing at American Democracy: Citizenship and the Rhetoric of Stand-Up Satire
LAUGHING AT AMERICAN DEMOCRACY: CITIZENSHIP AND THE RHETORIC OF STAND-UP SATIRE Matthew R. Meier A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2014 Committee: Ellen Gorsevski, Advisor Khani Begum Graduate Faculty Representative Alberto González Michael L. Butterworth, Co-Advisor © 2014 Matthew R. Meier All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Michael L. Butterworth and Ellen Gorsevski, Co-Advisors With the increasing popularity of satirical television programs such as The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report, it is evident that satirical rhetoric has unique and significant influence on contemporary American culture. The appeal of satirical rhetoric, however, is not new to the American experience, but its preferred rhetorical form has changed over time. In this dissertation, I turn to the development of stand-up comedy in America as an example of an historical iteration of popular satire in order to better understand how the rhetoric of satire manifests in American culture and how such a rhetoric can affect the democratic nature of that culture. The contemporary form of stand-up comedy is, historically speaking, a relatively new phenomenon. Emerging from the post-war context of the late 1950s, the form established itself as an enduring force in American culture in part because it married the public’s desire for entertaining oratory and political satire. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, a generation of stand- up comedians including Mort Sahl, Lenny Bruce, and Dick Gregory laid the foundation for contemporary stand-up comedy by satirizing politics, racism, and social taboos.

October 2, 2007 VAN HALEN's Opening Concert, September 27, 2007: 'Rock Gods Deliver' - Rolling Stone Magazine - Debut Concert Performed to Sold Out Crowd CHARLOTTE, N.C., Oct. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- With a blazing and defiant guitar run, rock legends VAN HALEN lit the torch on the opening night of one of the most highly anticipated tours in rock history. More than 18,000 fans, including those lining the rafters, stood on their feet at the Charlotte Bobcats Arena, as original lead vocalist David Lee Roth took the stage with the band. It was a celebration more than 22 years in the making. (Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20071002/LATU163) (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20071002/LATU16LOGO) "For more than two hours, the gods delivered," writes Rolling Stone magazine's Mark Kemp. Guitar innovator Eddie Van Halen, his drum legend brother Alex, and Eddie's 16-year-old son Wolfgang on bass joined Roth for the festivities, breathing new, invigorated life into a jaw-dropping canon of material. The Hollywood Reporter noted, "for one perfect night in Charlotte, Van Halen was nothing short of spectacular." The blistering delivery of hit after hit played out like the soundtrack to countless sun- drenched summers and a wealth of more to come. Starting with the familiar strains of the band's groundbreaking interpretation of the Kinks' "You Really Got Me," VAN HALEN weaved in and out of its catalog, pairing iconic anthems like "Jump," "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" and "Panama" along with other fan favorites including "Runnin' With The Devil" and "Jamie's Cryin'." All of this was delivered amid a myriad of fanning laser lights, an earth rumbling onslaught of sound and a stage-spanning screen perfect for capturing Eddie Van Halen's intricate fret work.

JUKEBOX AWARDS 2014 OBJECT LESSONS As I returned home from shopping one morning, I noted a sign posted on a streetlamp. It announced an estate sale. Ordinarily I demur from any opportunity to add one more item to my inventory of possessions. Nonetheless, the location of the event was on my street and only six addresses down. I made my approach and slowly realized it was a two flat I had privately dubbed “the house with the Nazi gate,” due to its wrought iron entry containing a design element, which incorporated the swastika. (Though the quasi-Greek cross design preceded the twentieth century scourge of Nazism, the roots of the ideogram in South and East Asia which became a representation of the inexorable wheel of history vanish into the past.) I opened that gate and entered. Inside I found a handful of people puttering amidst the belongings of a man who I had often seen on the front porch, engaged in the act of combing his dog’s fur. Snatches of overheard conversation revealed that the man had died and the proceeds from the sale of his home and belongings would be donated to an unnamed church. I pawed through a handful of books and found nothing of interest. A selection of records provided no discernible unifying theme, genre or focus. Spotting a reggae 45-RPM single, I had the sudden insight that much of what I was seeing appeared to be souvenirs: a record from Jamaica, a wood carving of Lao-Tse from Taiwan, a dish from here and a figurine from there.
