Van Halen, Balance Van Halen, Balance HISTORY VanVan Halen,Halen, BalanceBalance Heavy metal and hard rock got a dose of sunny California with one of By Glen Wexler rock ‘n’ roll’s most popular, chart-topping and revenue earning bands, Words by Charlie Fish Van Halen. Eddie Van Halen’s mastery with the guitar kept fans and critics pleased, while longtime on-again, off-again front man David Lee Roth’s larger than life persona, one-liners and stage antics made him an instant favorite with the media. With behind-the-scenes tensions leading to numerous highly publicized lineup changes—including the introduction of Sammy Hagar, who fronted the band for a sizable eleven years—it would be easy for some to overlook the band’s staggering, enduring success and loyal fan base. In 1995, following a string of well-received, Hagar-fronted albums, the band released Balance, which was decidedly less upbeat and more introspective, and was the last album to feature all-new material by Hagar. Its somber tones reflected the death of the band’s longtime manager, Ed Leffler, and Eddie’s health concerns (he was in need of a hip replacement). Photographer Glen Wexler, known for his outstanding work with photocompositions and for creating “improbable realities,” has worked on album covers for acts like Black Sabbath, ZZ Top, Rush, and Kiss. Having already created Van Halen’s F.U.C.K. (For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge) album cover, Glen was an obvious choice for crafting the band’s new release. Resource interviewed the very busy Glen, who discussed the controversial album cover art, why another version was created for the Japanese market, the band’s introspective turn, and the popular misconceptions surrounding the image. December People Band Biographies Robert Berry: Robert Berry was born into a musical family. His father had a dance band that travelled the ballroom circuit in the late 40's and 50's, where his mother was the featured vocalist. When Berry was born his father opened a music store. There, through the busy store’s affiliation with Vox guitars and amps - the brand the Beatles used, Robert was introduced to many of the local musicians. Local hit makers like the Count Five, Syndicate of Sound, Harper’s Bizarre and others often frequented the store. Berry began studying piano in earnest at 6 years old and by age 12 was recruited to join his first rock band with 4 older high school seniors. He continued classical and jazz studies before entering San Jose State University, as a music major. Berry first gained international attention with San Francisco based Hush, and headed to the UK to play in GTR along with Steve Howe of Yes fame, and then achieved a top ten charting single and toured with 3, his partnership with Keith Emerson and Carl Palmer. Before launching December People, Robert played with Sammy Hagar and toured with Ambrosia. When not touring with December People Robert is the bass player with the Greg Kihn Band. Gary Pihl: Raised in the suburbs of Chicago for the first 12 years of his life, Gary Pihl relocated to the San Francisco Bay area. Gary had his recording debut at age 19 with Day Blindness. He says, “After my time in Day Blindness, I was in a band called Fox with Roy Garcia and Johnny V (Vernazza), who went on to play in Elvin Bishop’s band.

  • California Noise: Tinkering with Hardcore and Heavy Metal in Southern California Steve Waksman
ABSTRACT Tinkering has long figured prominently in the history of the electric guitar. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, two guitarists based in the burgeoning Southern California hard rock scene adapted technological tinkering to their musical endeavors. Edward Van Halen, lead guitarist for Van Halen, became the most celebrated rock guitar virtuoso of the 1980s, but was just as noted amongst guitar aficionados for his tinkering with the electric guitar, designing his own instruments out of the remains of guitars that he had dismembered in his own workshop. Greg Ginn, guitarist for Black Flag, ran his own amateur radio supply shop before forming the band, and named his noted independent record label, SST, after the solid state transistors that he used in his own tinkering. This paper explores the ways in which music-based tinkering played a part in the construction of virtuosity around the figure of Van Halen, and the definition of artistic ‘independence’ for the more confrontational Black Flag. It further posits that tinkering in popular music cuts across musical genres, and joins music to broader cultural currents around technology, such as technological enthusiasm, the do-it-yourself (DIY) ethos, and the use of technology for the purposes of fortifying masculinity. Keywords do-it-yourself, electric guitar, masculinity, popular music, technology, sound California Noise: Tinkering with Hardcore and Heavy Metal in Southern California Steve Waksman Tinkering has long been a part of the history of the electric guitar. Indeed, much of the work of electric guitar design, from refinements in body shape to alterations in electronics, could be loosely classified as tinkering.

COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT ANALYSIS IN MUSIC: KATY PERRY A “DARK HORSE” CANDIDATE TO SPARK CHANGE? Edward M. Christian* ABSTRACT The music industry is at a crossroad. Initial copyright infringement judgments against artists like Katy Perry and Robin Thicke threaten millions of dollars in damages, with the songs at issue sharing only very basic musical similarities or sometimes no similarities at all other than the “feel” of the song. The Second Circuit’s “Lay Listener” test and the Ninth Circuit’s “Total Concept and Feel” test have emerged as the dominating analyses used to determine the similarity between songs, but each have their flaws. I present a new test—a test I call the “Holistic Sliding Scale” test—to better provide for commonsense solutions to these cases so that artists will more confidently be able to write songs stemming from their influences without fear of erroneous lawsuits, while simultaneously being able to ensure that their original works will be adequately protected from instances of true copying. * J.D. PHOTO: © ERIC STAUDENMAIER PHOTOGRAPHY ICONOCLASTS Creative genius. Where does it come from? For the Wexlers, it runs in the family. Donald Wexler, AKA the almighty mid-century architect of Palm Springs and Glen, his son, the prolific photographer with an eye for other worldly surrealism, collaborated to take on the behemoth task of erecting Glen’s live/work home in the Hollywood Hills. Fabrik Magazine caught up with them for an exclusive look at how the father-son duo realized this spectacular, modern-meets-mid-century dwelling: Fabrik Magazine (FM): Why did you want to remodel your house? Glen Wexler (GW): I wanted to create our dream house with a live/work space. PHOTO: © ERIC STAUDENMAIER PHOTOGRAPHY FM: How did the house remodel idea with your dad’s involvement come about? GW: We looked for years for a live/work space, but found nothing that was right for both work and family, or was affordable. When the adjacent lot was for sale, I asked my dad about adding on to our existing house bought in 1988. He said it would be challenging, but doable. FM: What were some of the challenges you faced? GW: It was an incredibly long, drawn-out process that started in 2000 and lasted roughly eight years until both the addition/remodel were finished. From the original geology report that recommended 40 caissons (probably enough to build a skyscraper!) to a woman on the Mulholland Design Committee who was determined to stop us, and other issues, it was a major ordeal.

Agenda Report October 26, 2020 TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council FROM: City Manager SUBJECT: CONSIDERATION OF LOCAL OPPORTUNITIES TO COMMEMORATE EDWARD L. VAN HALEN RECOMMENDATION: It is recommend that the City Council consider providing direction as to an appropriate means of commemorating Edward L. Van Halen. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: This staff report provides information regarding potential efforts that the City can undertake to recognize and honor Eddie Van Halen, a former Pasadena resident who went on to become one of the all-time greatest guitar players in Rock & Roll history. BACKGROUND: On October 6, 2020, the legendary guitarist Eddie Van Halen succumbed to his battle with throat cancer. Van Halen was the co-founder and main songwriter of the award winning band, Van Halen, a rock group that got its start in Pasadena in the 1970s. Since his passing, the City has received several requests and suggestions from the community to do or name something in Mr. Van Halen's honor to recognize both his local connection to Pasadena, as well as the impact that his artistry had on music. The Van Halen family emigrated from the Netherlands to Pasadena in 1962 and settled in a house on Las Lunas Street. The two Van Halen children, Eddie and Alex, attended Hamilton Elementary School where they performed for the first time in a student band called "The Broken Combs." By the early 1970s, the Van Halen boys attended Pasadena City College where, in a scoring· & arranging class, they met future Van Halen front man David Lee Roth. Together, with Arcadia resident Michael Anthony, they formed the group Van Halen and began playing local venues from backyard parties to the Civic Auditorium.

  • Prince Puts out on His Latest Vinyl Newest Halen Musically Tasty
Page 4, SIDELINES, Wednesday, June 8, 1988 Jlii v.«S;;;:i¥i¥' & :>>*:■• 3S Newest Halen musically tasty By DAVE CHANDLER Entertainment Writer Well kids, it's finally here, the long-awaited new album by Van Hagar, Van Hefflen, I mean Van Halen. What a catchy little tide it has, OU812, pretty clever huh? OU812 is the eigth Van Halen album or second one A.D. (after Dave). The bottom line to this album is thet it rocks. What is so great about OU812 is that it is not packed with the commercialism found in most of today's hard rock i albums. Now don't get me wrong, because it does include songs that will obviously be major hits. One track in particular, "When It's Love," is destined to be a Top 10 mainstay, but none of that Van Halen style was lost while producing the song. And if you're looking for the 90 m.p.h. speedbumers that the grovp is famous for, you'll also find them here. Two such songs are "Source of Infection" and "Sucker In A 3 Piece." These are sure to get your feet a tappin' or your head a bangin', whatever your preference may be. As usual there are the incredible guitar heroics of Eddie Van Halen and the band's great harmonies in the backup vocals. These are epitomized in the first single from the Wayne Cartwright+Staff album, "Black and Blue," which, incidentally, gets my vote Pleasing the crowd at Fan Fair... for the dirtiest song on the airwaves at the present time.

  • Van Halen – a Different Kind of Truth
Van Halen – A Different Kind Of Truth A Different Kind Of Truth is Van Halen’s twelfth studio album, and their first in fourteen years. This album marks the recording reunion of Eddie and Alex Van Halen with original singer/front man David Lee Roth. Roth was the singer in Van Halen from 1974‐1985, and was replaced by Sammy Hagar when the band softened their hard rock sound into a more commercial pop rock sound in the mid‐1980s. Roth recorded two songs with Van Halen in 1996 for a greatest hits album released when Hagar left the band, and expectations were high that he would return for a new album, but it didn’t work out that way. Instead, Extreme singer Gary Cherone joined Van Halen, and they recorded one weak album together. Touring reunions with both Hagar and Roth followed the departure of Cherone in 1999, but there was no new music recorded. There was much debate whether there would ever be another Van Halen album, as Eddie Van Halen was often seen drunk in public during his separation and after his divorce from actress Valerie Bertinelli. Furthermore, a YouTube video surfaced of Eddie, appearing to be near death, sitting in with a party band playing a Tommy Bolin song, and his guitar playing was pathetic. Eddie appeared unhealthy due to suspected drug use, and the second half of a tour was cancelled in 2008 due to Eddie’s poor health. This is the much abbreviated “CliffsNotes” version of the Van Halen soap opera, which effectively reduced one of the most popular rock bands in history to a joke.
