DAVID DOUBILET (BOTH) 130 NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC THE WEED THAT FEEDS THE NORTH ATLANTIC 131 ‘There’s nothing like it in any other ocean,’ says marine biologist Brian Lapointe. ‘There’s nowhere else on our blue planet that supports such diversity in the middle of the ocean—and it’s because of the weed.’ LAPOINTE IS TALKING about a floating seaweed known as sargassum in a region of the Atlantic called the Sargasso Sea. The boundaries of this sea are vague, defined not by landmasses but by five major currents that swirl in a clockwise embrace around Bermuda. Far from any main- land, its waters are nutrient poor and therefore exceptionally clear and stunningly blue. The Sargasso Sea, part of the vast whirlpool known as the North Atlantic gyre, often has been described as an oceanic desert—and it would appear to be, if it weren’t for the floating mats of sargassum. -

Executive Summary Background Race Rocks (XwaYeN), located 17 km southwest of Victoria in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, consists of nine islets, including the large main island, Great Race. Named for its strong tidal currents and rocky reefs, the waters surrounding Race Rocks (XwaYeN) are a showcase for Pacific marine life. This marine life is the result of oceanographic conditions supplying the Race Rocks (XwaYeN) area with a generous stream of nutrients and high levels of dissolved oxygen. These factors contribute to the creation of an ecosystem of high biodiversity and biological productivity. In 1980, the province of British Columbia, under the authority of the provincial Ecological Reserves Act, established the Race Rocks Ecological Reserve. This provided protection of the terrestrial natural and cultural heritage values (nine islets) and of the ocean seabed (to the 20 fathoms/36.6 meter contour line). -
California Noise: Tinkering with Hardcore and Heavy Metal in Southern California Steve Waksman
ABSTRACT Tinkering has long figured prominently in the history of the electric guitar. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, two guitarists based in the burgeoning Southern California hard rock scene adapted technological tinkering to their musical endeavors. Edward Van Halen, lead guitarist for Van Halen, became the most celebrated rock guitar virtuoso of the 1980s, but was just as noted amongst guitar aficionados for his tinkering with the electric guitar, designing his own instruments out of the remains of guitars that he had dismembered in his own workshop. Greg Ginn, guitarist for Black Flag, ran his own amateur radio supply shop before forming the band, and named his noted independent record label, SST, after the solid state transistors that he used in his own tinkering. This paper explores the ways in which music-based tinkering played a part in the construction of virtuosity around the figure of Van Halen, and the definition of artistic ‘independence’ for the more confrontational Black Flag. It further posits that tinkering in popular music cuts across musical genres, and joins music to broader cultural currents around technology, such as technological enthusiasm, the do-it-yourself (DIY) ethos, and the use of technology for the purposes of fortifying masculinity. DRAFT Sustainable Tourism for Marine Recreation Providers Wolcott Henry photo The Coral Reef Alliance: Coral Parks Program Education Series ©2004 Sustainable Tourism Introduction In this era of the global economy, tourism has become a primary source of revenue for many regions of the world, generating nearly $500 billion in worldwide revenues in 2001, and continuing to grow (WTO, 2001). The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) facilitated a study that points out that the tourism industry now represents more than 10% of the world’s gross domestic product (UNEP, 2002). While tourism brings significant benefits for both local and global economies, its rapid growth and development in recent decades has caused widespread social and environmental change across the globe, particularly in popular coastal resort destinations. In contrast, the concept of sustainable tourism is now seen as a way to promote socio-economic development in a given region while simultaneously protecting local culture and the natural environment. In order to address these issues and how they impact coral reefs, the Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) has compiled this Sustainable Tourism for Marine Recreation Providers handbook. In an effort to promote sustainable tourism, the information contained in this handbook highlights some of the current environmental problems associated with tourism growth and development, and promotes practical solutions for marine recreation providers to adopt good environmental practices. WMore than you might imagine.The story gets even stranger when you learn that her dad, Ken Nedimyer, is the longtime proprietor of Sea Life Inc., a tropical fish-collecting business based in the Florida Keys. But Nedimyer is no reef pillager; in fact, just the opposite. A marine biologist by training, he has devoted as much of his life to marine conservation as to growing his business — if not more. He also sits on the Sanctuary Advisory Council of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, and heads a grass-roots conservation organization called the Coral Restoration Foundation (CRF). In the process, Nedimyer has become one of the world’s leading experts in staghorn coral (Acropora cervi- cornis) propagation and restoration. And that’s important because over the past three decades more than 95 percent of all staghorn coral in Florida and the Caribbean has vanished.
