Burton Borough School Newsletter April 2017

Diary Dates: 4th May 2017: Year 8 Parents Evening 15th May 2017: Moore Celebration Evening 16th May 2017: Lennon Celebration Evening Rock of Ages 17th May 2017: For 4 nights at the beginning of February BBS travelled back to 1980s Los Angeles as 80 students performed ROCK OF AGES (High School Edition) as this year’s school musical. Tolkien Celebration Rock of Ages forced the cast and production team to embrace all things 80s- the rock Evening music- everything from Journey and Europe to Bon Jovi and Whitesnake; the fashion- double denim and leather jackets galore; and the hair- the bigger the better- definitely 18th May 2017: achieved with lots of hairspray and some fantastic wigs!

Attenborough Students had been rehearsing since last September, giving up Friday evenings every Celebration Evening week (and even 5 Sundays) to rehearse. This really shows the students determination to make this show the best one yet. All their hard work paid off in 4 sell-out 11th July 2017: performances- fantastic as Rock of Ages is a relatively new musical, particularly within schools. Sports Day As always this year’s cast had many students who have been in every school show 14th July 2017: since they started at Burton Borough and have gone from being members of the chorus to taking on lead roles this year. This itself is testament to the students own Sponsored Walk commitment and the enjoyment that being part of a show provides. Continued on page 2 Head’s Wall

Dear Families,

With the sun beaming and the birds singing outside my window as I write this, summer is certainly just around the corner and lifting everyone’s spirits! It has been another busy term at Burton Borough School, with everyone thinking how quickly it has flown by. Year 11s are working incredibly hard in preparation for their GCSE examinations (some students have already taken some in certain subjects!) and looking ahead to what awaits them after five years here.

By now, you will have also received a letter from me informing you of the upcoming changes to the current pastoral system at Burton Borough School from September 2017. In case you missed it, we will be moving from a four house system with two members of staff in charge of each house to a three ‘small school’ system where there will be four members of staff. Tutor groups will remain the same and any disruption will be kept to a minimum. This is an exciting period of change for us all and we are looking forward to the Summer term where we will be preparing for the new academic year. More details on this to follow!

In this issue you will see some of the excellent work our students and staff continue “…year 11s are to do (they never cease to amaze me with their drive and commitment!), including the amazing musical performance Rock of Ages, the UKMT Maths Team Challenge, working numerous sporting successes from teams and individuals (get the latest updates on incredibly hard in Twitter @BBSPE), musical performances and competitions (we won the schools’ section of the Great North Jazz Festival!), careers events, trips to Paris and further preparation for achievements in the Futurechef competition. Phew! their GCSE Have a well-earned, fantastic Easter break when it gets here and I look forward to sharing more news and developments with you in the Summer term. examinations…” Best wishes - Miss Carter Christine Carter Headteacher

We are lucky at BBS to not only have talented and committed students both on-stage, but also students who want to help backstage with costume, props and stage management. We are also lucky enough to have ex-students and staff who also come back year after year to take part and help with the show. It is really wonderful to know that so many people have enjoyed working on these shows over the years and are willing to give up their time be a part it.

As always Rock of Ages really was a team effort with all the Performing Arts Staff working tirelessly to produce the show. It really is rewarding to work with the students outside of the classroom and help build their confidence, new friendships and hopefully help them create memories they will hold with them for years to come. It is truly a privilege to be able to work with such talented young adults- they are a credit to both BBS and their families.

Watch this space for next year’s show!

The Rotary “Youth Speaks “Competition

2017

Six year 11 students have recently taken part in a speaking competition hosted by Rotary Club of Wellington, . The competition is well-established across Great Britain and Ireland and is designed to encourage the development of effective communication skills. The competition also complements the spoken language study element of the students’ GCSE in English language.

The students were split into two teams of two with each student taking a role. The school’s first team comprised of Jack Evans (LBU) as chairperson, Sam Pauling (PVI) as the speaker discussing the history of film and Max Iles (JPR) as the vote of thanks. The second team comprised of Leoni Bagnall (MPF) as chairperson, Emily Rodwell (SLO) as the speaker discussing the topic of disaffected youth and Georgia Hale (SLO) as the vote of thanks.

Both teams did an excellent job representing the school against students from Adams’ Grammar School, Newport Girls’ High School, Abraham Darby Academy and . The maturity and ability to present in front of an audience shows what a credit these students are. It was a privilege to work with them on this competition.

Mr T Dunbar – English Teacher

Literacy

We have had another great term with lots of activities and competitions: Our year 11 students were part of the Youth Speaks Competition and did BBS proud! This was a great opportunity to enhance their oracy skills and public speaking, which will stand them in good stead for when they leave BBS for college or employment.

We celebrated National story Telling Week with House Assemblies and sharing some fantastic stories from inspirational young people. We also celebrated World Book Day earlier this month and gave out vouchers for students to claim free books and share their favourite books with their class mates.

We’ve had our second cohort of Literacy Catch-Up with year 7s and are ready for our next cohort in the new term. The feedback that we have had from parents has been great and the students have gained a lot from these sessions.

Over half term we will be running an Extreme Reading Competition; the participation last year was fantastic and our winner was photographed abseiling, whilst reading a book! We are hoping to even top that this year, so please get your Extreme Reading Photos in after the Easter break. Have a wonderful Easter.

Miss J Neild - (Literacy co-ordinator)

Badminton Regional Finals in Birmingham Our Bronze Medal Winners!

From left to right Tia Ward, Maria Benjamin, a National Coach (who incidentally coaches the winning team), Gaby Jackson and Emily Fletcher. Recently, these young ladies represented The Burton Borough School in the Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin badminton tournament. Having won all the local matches, they went on to represent school in the Area Finals, in Shrewsbury, which they also won.

On 21 March, they went to play in the Regional Finals in Birmingham. We were told before the start of play that in order for the teams to reach this Regional Final, over 40,000 pupils from Staffordshire, Derbyshire, Shropshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire had played. All the teams should be very proud of themselves.

Our first match was against a school from Edgbaston, the overall eventual winners. Although our girls played their hearts out, we were defeated. The second match was against Wolverhampton Girls’ School and our girls won every game. They played absolutely brilliantly. This meant that we had to play for Bronze Medal position against a school from Burton upon Trent. It was a hard fought match with some fabulous badminton – a real thrill to watch!

We came back with the Bronze medals! It was such a brilliant day and we can all be very proud of our girls I would like to thank Steve Ward (Tia’s Dad) who has given up his precious time to come along on a Wednesday evening to coach all of our teams. Also he gave up his time and taxied us to the games in Shrewsbury and Birmingham.

Well done ladies – you were amazing. Such talent. Here’s to next year’s tournament! – Mrs Williams - Teacher

Help Us Get Burton Borough School More Active!

Any donations gratefully received at:

https://www.justgiving.com/ crowdfunding/ burtonboroughschool- physicaleducation

Aaron - I really like trampolining. Hannah - We love flipping on

It’s a really the trampoline, so we need enjoyable thing some modern ones to be able to do and it’s to do this properly, as the old really fun. ones are too stiff.

Why your support would mean so much:

We at Burton Borough School strongly believe in the many advantages that Physical Activity can bring to students: boosting energy, improving mood, increasing fitness and having fun. We are always looking at ways that we can improve our provision and thus engage as many students as possible. One activity that is extremely popular at school is Trampolining; all students have an opportunity to participate in this either in lessons times, or during extra-curricular clubs. But at the moment we do not have the equipment to be able to do this as much as we would like to. We are looking to raise funds to purchase more Trampolining equipment within the department and fund training so we can give more students the opportunity to take part and be active.

Thank you to all who took part in the Basketball Tournament in aid of The Red Nose Day and to those who came down to show their support.

Challenger Games This week the P.E Department has been hosting The Challenger Games in aid of getting students and teachers more active. The games have been held every lunchtime this week in the Sports Hall and was the opportunity for students to challenge the teaching staff to wheelchair races. This was proven very popular with many students and staff taking part and all who took part had a lot of fun.

Coming Soon! Parent and Student Sports Week!

Year 9 Careers Tasters on EEL day

On 8th February, we held our year 9 careers tasters during a school EEL day. All of our year 9 students took part in two workshops in careers areas of their choice. The sessions were led by local and national employers and provided students with an interactive, hands on activity involving skills needed in their occupational area.

The feedback from the students was extremely positive and we would like to thank the following individuals & businesses for giving up their time to support the event: Paul Ackers (Cap Gemini), Alan Madeley (Newpool Construction), Lisa Templar (Kindled Spirit), Des Machin (Barrington’s), Tracy Newbold (NHS), PC Lee Thomas & PCSO Andrew Protheroe (), Kim Chadwick, Amy Leavesley and Yasmin Cranny (), Hollie Whittles & Ian Howles (British Computer Society & Fraggle Works), Margaret Rowe & David Preece (fbcmb Solicitors).

UKMT Maths Team Challenge

Students with Mrs Kaur – Maths Teacher Students with Mrs Darby – Trainee Maths Teacher Four students from year 8 and 9 took part in the team challenge at Keele University. It was a great opportunity for our students to complete against pupils from other school. It was a regional challenge 37 schools took part. The students had to negotiate a number of tough problem solving rounds, including a group competition, a mathematical cross number, a shuttle round and a relay round. Our students worked really well as a team, and showed some excellent mathematical reasoning during the day.

Well done to Dominik Grebosz, Natalie Tagg, Holly Thomas and Nicolai Gallagher.

Exciting Times Ahead!

At the end of the Autumn Term we signed a partnership agreement with The Careers & Enterprise Company (Telford & Wrekin) to enhance the current provision for our students. Since then we have begun work with our Enterprise Advisor: Paul Ackers, a Senior Delivery Manager from Cap Gemini (pictured right)

We are in process of planning lots more careers related activities to broaden the experiences available to our students. Below are two events that have been planned for this half term.

In preparation for their Work Experience placements in the

Summer Term, on 4th April year 10 students will take part in an Enterprise & Employability Skills programme that is packed full of exciting activities that create a raw, earthy and realistic experience of working life.

Learning Mentors

We have been appointed as Learning Mentors at Burton Borough School for all students who fall into the Pupil Premium category. Since we began in September, we have introduced a wide variety of intervention opportunities, exclusive trips and tailored support, specifically for Pupil Premium students, in an attempt to help our students be the best they can be. Another aspect of our role is to ensure that staff have Pupil Premium students at the forefront of their mind when delivering classes to their pupils. We have also become an extra port of call for students to come and see us when they have any issues they wish to raise. One of our main goals is to make sure we forge strong links with parents. We have recently held a very successful Coffee Morning with Year 7 parents and we will be hosting another for Year 10 on 5th May 2017.If you would like to get in touch with us directly, you can do so using the following email addresses:[email protected] – Miss B Beddow - Year 7, 8 and 9 Learning [email protected] – Mr J Roden – Year 10 and 11 Learning Mentor. You can also get in touch with us via telephone on the main number: 01952 386500.We look forward to hearing from you! Paris Trip 2017 At 3.30am on Thursday 6th April, whilst most Burton Borough students will be all cosy in their beds, a group of 48 students will be starting their exciting journey to the French Capital – Paris. Accompanying them will be myself (Miss Taylor), Mrs Paginton, Mr Bogaczyk, Mr Roden and Mr Oldham… It should be a fun journey with a full bus and Mrs Paginton’s bad jokes……. Whilst we are in Paris we will be staying at Chateau de Grande Romaine (a big old castle just south of Paris in a small town called Lesigny) – and will be visiting all of the famous sites. Our itinerary is as follows: Thursday – Travelling to Paris, Welcome Tour & Welcome Challenge Friday – A.M Visit to a local market “Brie Comte Robert” P.M Musée de Louvre followed by Notre Dame de Paris and a coach tour of Paris by night to see the Eiffel tower lights. Saturday – Arc de Triomphe & Eiffel Tower followed by a campfire/ evening activity Sunday – Stade de France & Visit to Sacré Coeur and Montmartre Monday – Disneyland Paris Tuesday – A.M. Hypermarket and the journey home returning back to BBS late evening. Our aim is for all of our wonderful students to be able to improve their spoken French and be inspired to study French further and maybe other languages in the future. They may also pick up the “need to travel” bug. A trip to be remembered for a life time! Follow our twitter feed @BBSMFL1 for updates and pictures of where we visit during our time there!

Miss Taylor – MFL Teacher Tolkien House

This week has seen us hold our Easter assembly where we have celebrated the successes of our House this term. As a House we are represented in every avenue of school life and it was lovely at the beginning of assembly to see so many students standing to show they have been part of something that represents our House. In Tolkien we have students who are actively involved in the school bands and choirs, students who were in the recent musical.

We have students who are talented at sport and represent us through sports teams. We have students who give up their time at break and lunchtime to support other students by hearing them read or supporting them with revision. We are very proud of our Year 11 Senior Students who undertake their duties every week and help with the smooth running of the school during social time. It is important to recognise all the students within Tolkien who are working hard and taking advantage of all the opportunities open to them and are such good ambassadors of Tolkien.

As the time approaches for Year 11 to begin their exams we wish them luck in their revision and wish them well as they continue their preparations for both their exams and the next step in their education. We turn to Year 10 for our next group of Senior Students. The first round of applications will be submitted by the time you read this and our very first group of Senior Students will be appointed. This first small group will be ambassadors for the rest of Tolkien and will have fulfilled strict criteria to be amongst the first group to be granted Senior Student Status. Good luck to those students, we know you will represent us well.

As we approach the end of term we are looking forward to Tolkien Celebration Evening next term. It is always a lovely evening where we celebrate the successes of Students in Tolkien over the last year. Look out for an invitation in the post if your child has won an award and if they have, we look forward to seeing you there.

It only remains for Mrs Parkinson and I to wish you a Happy Easter and we hope you have a restful break.

Celebrating Success, Overcoming Challenge, Supporting Others

Wow! This term has been an incredibly busy term and has flown by in the blink of an eye! Our main Lennon event this term has been our Charity Day in aid of our House Charity ‘Combat Stress’. It was our most successful year to date in terms of student involvement, with each tutor group running a stall at lunchtime in the gym. Stalls offered cakes, hot chocolates, lucky dips, computer game competitions, raffles, tombola and musical entertainment. A new addition to our fund raising activities this year was the Lennon House Chocolate Hamper Raffle that was very ably organised by our House Captain Team. In essence, each member of Lennon House was asked to donate a small chocolate bar and then the chocolate hamper was raffled at 50p a ticket. The winner was selected by Mr Morgan (our deputy head) and was won by Daisy Adams in CCO. It was great that the winner was a member of our own house, but there was a lot of disappointment from other ticket holders across the school. In total our Charity Day raised £722. Many thanks to all for your support whether that was with donations, manning a stall or purchasing items. The house continues to work hard to earn House points and hopefully win the end of year trophy. Also, as this is going to press, the PE Department are running Inter-house Sports Competitions. There are have hopes that as strong contenders in the School Sports Day, Lennon House will stand a good chance of winning these new events. Time will tell and hopefully there will be further good news in the next newsletter. Before the term ends, we also have our first series of EEL days where we are working in house communities. On the Thursday of that week, Lennon Students in Year 9 will be visiting the Birthplace of The Beatles – Liverpool. Next term is Sports Day, which, I have to admit, is one of my very favourite days in school. Please encourage students to get plenty of exercise in to warm up for this event. Have a well-earned Easter Break and I look forward to welcoming Lennon House back after Easter.

Moore House

This has been an exciting time in Moore House as we build up to our charity fundraising week at the end of March. Marie Curie provide care and support for more than 50,000 people living with a terminal illness and their families in the UK each year. Their nurses work night and day, in people’s homes across the UK, providing hands-on care and vital emotional support. Their hospices offer specialist round-the-clock care. They help people throughout their illness by giving practical information, support from trained volunteers and being there when someone wants to talk. We are proud to support them and fundraise for them every year. On Friday the 3rd of March some volunteer students went out in the cold and rain to Newport High Street to fundraise for Marie Curie. They managed to raise a phenomenal £475 in mere 3 hours!

On Saturday the 25th of March we also ran

a stall in Newport Town Centre, selling all

kinds of cakes and other donations

brought in by generous students and

parents. Two of our talented musicians

also busked on the day helping us to raise over £360!

Since then we have been making plans for the fundraising week and for the Friday Fete which took place on the 31st March. There was a huge range of activities being put on including a photo booth, penalty shoot-out competition, cake cake sales, tombola, sponge the teacher and two Gaming Vans! It ran at lunch time and for an hour after school too.

Our year 11’s are working with real focus towards their upcoming exams, many year ten pupils are putting together senior student applications and a great number of our students in the house continue to excel in all manner of sports, arts and academic competitions. This term has seen us take the title of the best behaved house in the school with fewer behavioural events than the other houses, and we continue to push for the house point trophy.

Charity week – May 2nd to May 5th

Attenborough are hoping to outdo the other houses by raising lots of money during their charity week for cancer research, in May. One of the events that will be taking place is the run, swim and cycle. It will be the equivalent of running, swimming and cycling from Newport to Paris! Any parents or students that would like to participate please can you speak to a member of staff in Attenborough and you can find a sponsorship form on the cancer research website. Start collecting sponsers then simply run, cycle or swim as far as you can during the charity week and we will add it to our total.

Thank you to everyone who bought Hamper Raffle tickets, and also to everyone who gave up their time during the busy month of December to sell lots of tickets.

The volume of Hamper Raffle donations was very generous this year, and PTA was able to assemble 10 hampers more than last year. Over £1,000 was raised from this activity. A big thank you to everyone who donated items, and to those who bought tickets.

The Hamper draw was held in the end-of-term whole school assembly. Joan George, Lee and Cameron Storey’s Nan, was one of our winners PTA members wanted!

Please consider helping PTA with their fundraising activities. Meetings are generally held once a half-term on a Tuesday evening. Future activities include the Sponsored Walk in July, a fundraising stall in May and the possibility of signing up to an online shopping scheme such as Easyfundraising.org.uk which generates donations every time you shop online. Nathan Hester, Finlay Bickerton, Ava Pascall, Hannah Aitken Molly Duffield, Lucy Barton, Alex Aver-Howdle

The range and quality of dishes always amazes me. We have some budding Jamie Olivers and Nigella Lawsons!

Congratulations to Ava Pascall and Nathan Hester for winning the school heat. Both took part in the local final at Hereford and College on Wednesday 11th January. They thoroughly enjoyed the chance to cook in a full catering kitchen and gained valuable feedback from highly respected, nationally accomplished chefs.

Well done and keep cooking!

Burton Borough School Hosts Spanish Students

This was the first time we trialled such a long time for the students to be immersed completely into a British family and school life.

The children followed the full time syllabus and were thrown in at the deep end. The success of the venture was backed up by the fact all the exchange students would love to do it again. In today’s world of technology, the children were able to Skype home and speak to their families on a regular basis; this helped to keep home sickness at bay.

The main aim of the exchange trip was to firstly dramatically improve their language skills in English, by the end of the placement most of the pupils were nearing fluency in understanding English and many were able to speak English fairly well. Equally important was the opportunity for the children to immerse themselves in British life and culture.

They were all placed with a BBS pupil and lived with their families. Every weekend they went on trips with the exchange trips organiser and they were able to meet up with their buddies who had been placed at various other schools. They visited lots of places including London and Scotland and the students enjoyed the sight-seeing immensely.

We have received some excellent feedback. The boys are doing great in school and have all greatly improved their English to the extent that Alvaro Martin, Jaime and Sergio are going to prepare to take the Cambridge First Certificate examination this year which is similar to English GCSE! The other 2 boys Alvaro Rupérez and Tomas are going to take the Preliminary English Test from Cambridge University which is great news.

They all had a great time here with us at the BBS and said that it was a great opportunity for them and they left with lots of new pen pals.

Every year we welcome a group of Spanish and Mexican students to come and stay with us for 3-4 weeks in June. The students thoroughly enjoy the experience. We will be looking for host families if you are interested. This is a great experience for our students studying Spanish as they also learn a lot during their time here. If anyone is interested in hosting one of our visitors please contact Telford School of English Organiser Catherine Pritchard on: 07949 162289 or see Miss Evison in the Comms office.

A huge thank you to staff, students and all involved in making this a wonderful experience.

Performance Updates

Big Band at the Great North Jazz Festival At the start of March, Burton Borough School Big Band made the long journey north to Durham to compete at the Great North Jazz Festival.

After an early start and a long journey to the venue, Big Band played fantastically in their first competition since Mrs Ruston took over as their Musical Director. Not only did Big Band come first and win the Schools Section of the competition but Katie Roberts also won an Adjudicators Award for her Alto Saxophone solo performance.

The Big Band along with Concert Band and Junior Wind Band will next be competing at the National Concert Band Festival at the start of the Easter holidays. Good luck to all!

Performing Arts Concert

On Wednesday 5th April BBS will be holding a showcase concert featuring music, drama and dance from some of our talented students.

The school bands and choirs will be performing as well as GCSE and KS3 Drama and Dance students, along with a selection of instrumental and vocal soloists.

This is a fantastic opportunity to see BBS students perform. Tickets are available from the Music Office

GCSE Drama Performance Evening

On Wednesday 29th March the Year 11 GCSE Drama students performed their final exam pieces to friends and family as a dress rehearsal for their final exam the following week.

Every performance has to be linked to a theme set by the exam board and this year it was ‘Looking Back, Looking Forward’. Students can choose to perform either a scripted or a devised piece of drama lasting for between 20-30 minutes- this year they all chose to work with a script that fit the theme and they have been rehearsing since January. All of the plays this year deal with some thought-provoking issues but the students have all embraced the challenge of working on the texts.

 ‘Shakers’ looks at the lives of 3 cocktail waitresses and explores their dreams and aspirations outside of the bar where they work, while also introducing us to the lives of their customers.  ‘Playhouse Creatures’ is about the first English actresses, including Nell Gwynn, who broke barriers to perform on stage for King Charles II during the 1690s. The play brings real historical characters to life, mixing actual events with what they might have said backstage.  ‘Too Much Punch for Judy’ is based on a real events- a car crash that happened in the 1980s and explores the events leading up to and after the crash- especially how it affected the driver of the car.  ‘Eclipsed’ tells the heart breaking story of young unmarried mothers who were sent to a Magdalene Convent laundry during the 1960s. The mothers have their children put up for adoption and work in the laundry as penance for their sins.  ‘Blue Stockings’ is set in 1896 and centres on Cambridge University’s first women students and their struggle to be allowed to graduate against opposition from their own families and their male classmates and even the professors teaching them.  ‘Find Me’ is based on real events and tells the story of Verity- a young woman who has spent her whole life dealing with mental health problems. The play shows the effects of her condition on her family and questions the treatment she received by the healthcare system.

For some of the students, the performance evening was the first time they had performed to an audience outside of their school lessons and despite some nerves everyone performed brilliantly. The time that students had put in rehearsing during lessons, after school and at weekends all paid off.

The performance evening is the student’s opportunity for a ‘dress rehearsal’ before the real exam where they perform in front of an external examiner. Their final GCSE Drama exam was on Tuesday 4th April so fingers crossed the examiner likes their performances and rewards the students with the marks they deserve.

Parking on Audley Avenue

A large number of parents are still dropping off and picking up students directly outside school. This obviously causes concern for the safety of all students around the school main entrance and in Audley Avenue. It also causes a number of knock on issues with our resident neighbours, deliveries to school and other businesses in Audley Avenue. Can we politely ask, if you bring your child to school to drop them a little way away from school and encourage them to walk some of the way to school.

Attendance

If your child is ill you must contact the school as soon as possible, giving us the following information:

- Your child’s name, year and form group; - Reason for absence and nature of illness; - Likely length of absence if known. You can inform us by one of the following methods: 1. By contacting the Attendance Office on 01952 386554 and leaving a message via answer phone. 2. By contacting us via e-mail: [email protected] 3. By phoning school Reception on 01952 386500. 4. Please do not be alarmed if we call to check on your absent child’s progress for our records.

If you need to inform us of future medical or other appointments you can do so by:

• using the same contact details, • sending in a letter, • writing a note in their PSD, • E-mailing your child’s tutor (their address can be found on the school web site).
