Burton Borough School Newsletter Rock of Ages Burton Borough School Newsletter April 2017 Diary Dates: 4th May 2017: Year 8 Parents Evening 15th May 2017: Moore Celebration Evening 16th May 2017: Lennon Celebration Evening Rock of Ages 17th May 2017: For 4 nights at the beginning of February BBS travelled back to 1980s Los Angeles as 80 students performed ROCK OF AGES (High School Edition) as this year’s school musical. Tolkien Celebration Rock of Ages forced the cast and production team to embrace all things 80s- the rock Evening music- everything from Journey and Europe to Bon Jovi and Whitesnake; the fashion- double denim and leather jackets galore; and the hair- the bigger the better- definitely 18th May 2017: achieved with lots of hairspray and some fantastic wigs! Attenborough Students had been rehearsing since last September, giving up Friday evenings every Celebration Evening week (and even 5 Sundays) to rehearse. This really shows the students determination to make this show the best one yet. All their hard work paid off in 4 sell-out 11th July 2017: performances- fantastic as Rock of Ages is a relatively new musical, particularly within schools. Sports Day As always this year’s cast had many students who have been in every school show 14th July 2017: since they started at Burton Borough and have gone from being members of the chorus to taking on lead roles this year. This itself is testament to the students own Sponsored Walk commitment and the enjoyment that being part of a show provides. Continued on page 2 Head’s Wall Dear Families, With the sun beaming and the birds singing outside my window as I write this, summer is certainly just around the corner and lifting everyone’s spirits! It has been another busy term at Burton Borough School, with everyone thinking how quickly it has flown by. Year 11s are working incredibly hard in preparation for their GCSE examinations (some students have already taken some in certain subjects!) and looking ahead to what awaits them after five years here. By now, you will have also received a letter from me informing you of the upcoming changes to the current pastoral system at Burton Borough School from September 2017. In case you missed it, we will be moving from a four house system with two members of staff in charge of each house to a three ‘small school’ system where there will be four members of staff. Tutor groups will remain the same and any disruption will be kept to a minimum. This is an exciting period of change for us all and we are looking forward to the Summer term where we will be preparing for the new academic year. More details on this to follow! In this issue you will see some of the excellent work our students and staff continue “…year 11s are to do (they never cease to amaze me with their drive and commitment!), including the amazing musical performance Rock of Ages, the UKMT Maths Team Challenge, working numerous sporting successes from teams and individuals (get the latest updates on incredibly hard in Twitter @BBSPE), musical performances and competitions (we won the schools’ section of the Great North Jazz Festival!), careers events, trips to Paris and further preparation for achievements in the Futurechef competition. Phew! their GCSE Have a well-earned, fantastic Easter break when it gets here and I look forward to sharing more news and developments with you in the Summer term. examinations…” Best wishes - Miss Carter Christine Carter Headteacher Continued from page 1 We are lucky at BBS to not only have talented and committed students both on-stage, but also students who want to help backstage with costume, props and stage management. We are also lucky enough to have ex-students and staff who also come back year after year to take part and help with the show. It is really wonderful to know that so many people have enjoyed working on these shows over the years and are willing to give up their time be a part it. As always Rock of Ages really was a team effort with all the Performing Arts Staff working tirelessly to produce the show. It really is rewarding to work with the students outside of the classroom and help build their confidence, new friendships and hopefully help them create memories they will hold with them for years to come. It is truly a privilege to be able to work with such talented young adults- they are a credit to both BBS and their families. Watch this space for next year’s show! The Rotary “Youth Speaks “Competition 2017 Six year 11 students have recently taken part in a speaking competition hosted by Rotary Club of Wellington, Shropshire. The competition is well-established across Great Britain and Ireland and is designed to encourage the development of effective communication skills. The competition also complements the spoken language study element of the students’ GCSE in English language. The students were split into two teams of two with each student taking a role. The school’s first team comprised of Jack Evans (LBU) as chairperson, Sam Pauling (PVI) as the speaker discussing the history of film and Max Iles (JPR) as the vote of thanks. The second team comprised of Leoni Bagnall (MPF) as chairperson, Emily Rodwell (SLO) as the speaker discussing the topic of disaffected youth and Georgia Hale (SLO) as the vote of thanks. Both teams did an excellent job representing the school against students from Adams’ Grammar School, Newport Girls’ High School, Abraham Darby Academy and Charlton School. The maturity and ability to present in front of an audience shows what a credit these students are. It was a privilege to work with them on this competition. Mr T Dunbar – English Teacher Literacy We have had another great term with lots of activities and competitions: Our year 11 students were part of the Youth Speaks Competition and did BBS proud! This was a great opportunity to enhance their oracy skills and public speaking, which will stand them in good stead for when they leave BBS for college or employment. We celebrated National story Telling Week with House Assemblies and sharing some fantastic stories from inspirational young people. We also celebrated World Book Day earlier this month and gave out vouchers for students to claim free books and share their favourite books with their class mates. We’ve had our second cohort of Literacy Catch-Up with year 7s and are ready for our next cohort in the new term. The feedback that we have had from parents has been great and the students have gained a lot from these sessions. Over half term we will be running an Extreme Reading Competition; the participation last year was fantastic and our winner was photographed abseiling, whilst reading a book! We are hoping to even top that this year, so please get your Extreme Reading Photos in after the Easter break. Have a wonderful Easter. The Implementation and Impact of the Reformation in Shropshire, 1545-1575 Elizabeth Murray A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts United Faculty of Theology The Melbourne College of Divinity October, 2007 Abstract Most English Reformation studies have been about the far north or the wealthier south-east. The poorer areas of the midlands and west have been largely passed over as less well-documented and thus less interesting. This thesis studying the north of the county of Shropshire demonstrates that the generally accepted model of the change from Roman Catholic to English Reformed worship does not adequately describe the experience of parishioners in that county. Acknowledgements I am grateful to Dr Craig D’Alton for his constant support and guidance as my supervisor. Thanks to Dr Dolly Mackinnon for introducing me to historical soundscapes with enthusiasm. Thanks also to the members of the Medieval Early Modern History Cohort for acting as a sounding board for ideas and for their assistance in transcribing the manuscripts in palaeography workshops. I wish to acknowledge the valuable assistance of various Shropshire and Staffordshire clergy, the staff of the Lichfield Heritage Centre and Lichfield Cathedral for permission to photograph churches and church plate. Thanks also to the Victoria & Albert Museum for access to their textiles collection. The staff at the Shropshire Archives, Shrewsbury were very helpful, as were the staff of the State Library of Victoria who retrieved all the volumes of the Transactions of the Shropshire Archaeological Society. I very much appreciate the ongoing support and love of my family.

We had a long discussion on where it should be. There were some varied views on where it should be’ 13 – ‘We explored the hot/warm concept, the main topic was how do you ensure that services on offer in 10 year’s time are still able to respond to the changing ways we will be delivering them. We feel there is more flexibility on the warm site to change things. IT question – need solutions that would work to support the system 12 – ‘Feeling that from a public, patient and GP perspective that having two balanced sites was a good thing and would be well received. Negative media needs to be repaired, make people aware of the new options’ 11 – ‘Needs to be a decision made sooner rather than later, money wasted’ 10 – ‘Concerned about modelling assumptions on SOC. Problem with assumptions not being revisited means that activity could lead to smaller hospitals created than would be necessary.

  • A0638-Shifnal-Matters-Petition.Pdf
Dear Sir, It is our understanding that it has been past practice for Shropshire Council to delete all and any signatures on petitions that are indicated as from out side Shropshire. At the same time, it is your published policy that responses to the current consultation on the draft local plan are open to all who live, work or are at education in Shropshire. We wish to draw the following to your attention; 1. The change.org site allocates a location to each signatory based on their internet rather than actual location. Thus, while standing in Shifnal the location may show Telford and whilst standing in Albrighton it may show Wolverhampton. 2. Those who live in Shropshire are highly likely to work outside of Shropshire and during their working day a vote will reflect a location outside Shropshire. 3. Those who work or are at education in Shropshire are also potentially residing outside of the county. 4. During the Covid19 restrictions many residents are working from home. It is common practice for work-places to invoke a system of virtual private networks as a security measure. Anyone using a computer with such a network will be assigned a location by change.org that reflects the networks server rather than the users geographic location. In the era of cloud computing this location could be anywhere in the world. We would want to point out that Shifnal Matters has only promoted this petition through adverts in Shifnal and Tong. Our social media posts are also through pages that are specific to Shifnal and Albrighton.
