The Time Traveler's Guide to Medieval England: A Handbook for Visitors to the Fourteenth Century, by Ian Mortimer. More of a travelogue than a history book, it looks at the 14th century as a tourist would see it. The book talked about topics ranging from food and lodging, to crime and sanitation. One of the things it stressed was the need to belong to something larger. The middle ages were a brutal time. In all aspects of life, associations were critical. From business to traveling safely, having a title or family link could be the difference between success and disaster. The name of Douglas was pretty influential in France and England, as well as in Scotland. Claiming membership in such an important group would certainly benefit the individual. In travel could prevent mishaps on the road that would otherwise beset the unwary. A Douglas clansman could expect preferential treatment in a variety of areas. Being a member was about more than a name or geographic area. It was about being able to rely on your neighbors for help and security. It offered a degree of trust that comes from belonging. Clan meant family, whether by blood or sept, to be a Douglas was something. Given the rank that Douglas held within the Scottish nobility, membership definitely had its privileges. The clan system was unique in European history. It depended on family ties more than political alliances for support. In fact many of the existing Lords of Scotland have names that include the families that they derive their titles from; Richard Walter John Montagu Douglas Scott, Duke of Buccleuch, and Alexander Douglas Douglas-Hamilton, Duke of Hamilton for example.

His descendent, another Sir Herbert, was created Lord Maxwell around 1440, taking his seat as Lord of Parliament. From his second son descended the Maxwells of Monrieth, who were later to be created baronets in 1681. The fifth Lord intrigued with Henry VII of England, although by 1542 James V had appointed him warden of the marches. Maxwell was captured at the Battle of Solway Moss in the same year. John, the seventh Lord, remained a devout Catholic throughout the Reformation, and his name was linked with a number of plots to restore Mary, Queen of Scots to her throne.

It is therefore remarkable that their origins remain obscure. The name itself is territorial and it has been suggested that it originates form lands b Douglas Water received by a Flemish knight from the Abbey of Kelso. However, the first certain record of the name relates to a William de Dufglas who, between 1175 and 1199, witnessed charter by the Bishop of Glasgow to the monks of Kelso. Sir William de Douglas, believed to be the third head of the Borders family, had two sons who fought against the Norse at the Battle of Largs in 1263. William Douglas ‘The Hardy’ was governor of Berwick when the town was besieged by the English. Douglas was taken prisoner when the town fell and he was only released when he agreed to accept the claim of Edward I of England to be overlord of Scotland. He later joined Sir William Wallace in the struggle for Scottish independence but he was again captured and died in England in 1302.

    William, fifth and last Earl of Nithsdale was a Jacobite supporter. He “came out” in the 1715 rebellion and was taken prisoner after the capitulation at Preston. He was imprisoned in the Tower of London and brought to trial for high treason in the House of Lords. After pleading guilty, he was sentenced to death by the Lord Chancellor. On the night before his scheduled execution he escaped from the Tower wearing women’s clothing, in a daring plan devised and carried out by his devoted wife. This was the only entirely successful escape from the Tower. He died in exile at the Jacobean court in Rome, in 1744. His only son was restored to the now heavily indebted estates, but not the dignities. Archibald Johnstone, Senator (Retired) I recently returned from Scotland, where I was accompanied by my granddaughter Heather, age 21, on her first visit to the Land of Heather. It was our good fortune to visit Raehills, the castle-like former home of the Rt. Hon. Patrick Hope Johnstone, Earl of Annandale and ton/e in ton/e Chief of Clan Johnstone, and his wife, the Countess of Annandale. The Annandales are now retired to ‘Annanbank’, a short distance from Raehills, in Dumfriesshire. Raehills is pres- S ently occupied by their son, Lord David Johnstone, his wife, Lady Johnstone, their son Percy, age five, and daughter Anna, age four. The well-manicured grounds at Raehills are enormous. The long, interesting driveway leading up to the superb castle which is mirrored in a small lake that is guarded by ancestral ohn oaks and banks of rhododendrons. On either side of the drive, countless deer may be seen, which - although not quite domesticated - move only yards from the driveway at the ap- proach of a pedestrian or automobile. Peacocks and a wide variety of other colourful birds J cross and re-cross the curved driveway, requiring care when driving. The large, well-appointed suites that Heather and I occupied in Raehills are models of comfort and ease, both looking out to a fine view of the gardens and the island-studded lake, shining like a mirror in the rising sun.

Florence Ridley The Distinctive Character of Douglas's Eneados The earliest English translation of Vergi1's Aeneid was begun in 1512, and completed, "Apon the fest of Mary Magde1an, / Fra Crystis byrth, the dait quha list to heir, / A thousand fyve hundreth and thretteyn 3eir.,,1 This achievement, a truly monumental one for the space of a single year, was that of a member of Scotland's powerful clan Douglas: Gawin, Bishop of Dunke1d. The Bishop's translation of the 12 books of , to which he joined a 13th by Mapheus Vegius and prologues for each of the 13, has many claims to fame. It is a first ren­ dering in the of a major classic; a treasure trove for early linguists, who found therein not only a wealth of importations from French and Latin, but a key to the mysteries of Anglo-Saxon. In the 17th century, William L'isle, ap­ proaching Old English by way of "Dutch, both high and low," wrote that, "At length I lighted on Virgil, Scottished by the Reverand Gawin Doug1as ••• the best translation of that Poet that ever I read: and though I found that dialect more hard than any of the former (as nearer the Saxon, because farther from the Norman), yet with help of the Latine I made shift to understand it, and read the book more than once from beginning to the end.
