After our experience with Hurricane Harvey, I’m sure none of us wanted to risk being caught in high water, so canceling the meeting was a good call. Our April 25, 2018 meeting was attended by twenty-three members, including two new members who joined at the meeting. Please welcome Angeles and Edward Rojas to the club! Also attending the meeting were three guests: Carolina Paez, Lynne Schafer, and Suzanne Siegel. Several members donated some wonderful door prizes. Dave Thomas brought in a Euphorbia “Briar Patch,” which was quickly snapped up by Milton Pierson. Karla Halpaap-Wood provided a very nice Golden Barrel cactus pup, which went home with Cindy Gray. Liliana Cracraft donated a set of beautiful beaded cactus coasters, which was won by Imtiaz Bangee. Cindy Gray was extra generous – she brought in two Gasteraloe “Green Ice” plants, which went home with Karla Halpaap-Wood and Edward Rojas. Cindy also donated two Huernia scheideriana plants, which were won by Ray Gonzalez and Bruce Moffett. It is my sad duty to report the loss of Paul Stricklin’s mother, Rae Milton, who passed away on March 24, 2018. Rae was also a long-time member of HCSS. Our thoughts and prayers are with Paul and their family. As always, please send any news of HCSS members and their families to [email protected]. -

San Gabriel Valley Cactus & Succulent Society COMMUNIQUE An Affi liate of the Cactus & Succulent Society of America, Inc. May 2010 - Volume 43, Number 5 May Meeting: President’s Message We had a very lively Board of Directors meeting in April. Our Thursday, next Board meeting will be at the Inter-City Show in August. Plan to May 13 at 7:30 pm attend if you have thoughts or issues that you’d like to share. One of the items discussed at the BoD meeting was the issue of Meetings are held on the incorporation. We have decided to begin the process of becoming a 2nd Thursday of the month not-for-profi t 501 (c) 3 Corporation. This will enable us to be a more legitimate entity. Among the many benefi ts for us in becoming a non- at 7:30 pm in the Palm Room, profi t corporation is that we will be in position to accept donations and Los Angeles County Arboretum, provide the donor a tax write-off. You will see more about this in the Arcadia. near future, but we should have the process complete by the end of the year. We will have our annual picnic at Pitzer College again this year. Mini-Show Plants: The date is July 17. Plan to be there at around 11 -11:30 AM. The club provides sodas and water and fried chicken. Members bring side CACTUS — dishes and desserts. We’ll eat at around 12:00 or when the chicken Ferocactus arrives. There is an auction after we eat, so bring your check book and Joe Clements will tour us around the campus to show off his latest SUCCULENT— plantings of succulents. -

In Vitro Seed Germination and Plant Growth of “Cabeça-De-Frade” (Cactaceae)1

The present work evaluated the effects of different concentrations of Murashige & Skoog (MS, MS/2 and MS/4) culture medium and sucrose (15 g L-1 and 30 g L-1) on in vitro seed germination and plant growth of M. glaucescens and the efficiency of sterilization with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) on in vitro seed germination and plant growth of M. glaucescens when using seeds and M. glaucescens and M. paucispinus when using apical segment of cladode. In M. glaucescens, the final germination at the different MS and sucrose concentrations varied between 53.5 and 68.1% and the best results for in vitro growth were observed with the lowest mineral salt (MS/2 and MS/4) and sucrose (15 g L-1) concentrations, with lengths of the aerial portion of 9.70 and 10.76 mm, respectively. There was no difference in seed germination and plant growth in chemical and autoclave medium. It is concluded that the use of chemical sterilization with NaOCl at low concentrations of salts (MS/2 and MS/4) and sucrose (15 g L-1) are quite advantageous for producing ornamental plants germinated in vitro and/or apical segment of cladode of M. -

Inicialmente, este dia era comemorado com uma atividade de integração entre funcionários e professores, com a realização de um caruru. A partir de 2002, essa comemoração ganhou um novo caráter, sendo então criada a Semana do Biólogo. Esse evento proporcionou a realização de debates sobre temas atuais, por meio de mini- cursos, palestras, e mesas redondas. No ano de 2003, a Semana do Biólogo associou-se ao IV Seminário Interno de Biologia. -

Artículo de investigación Morfometría y patrones de distribución de Melocactus violaceus subsp. margaritaceus (Cactaceae), en dos ecosistemas contrastantes brasileños Morphometry and distribution patterns of Melocactus violaceus subsp. margaritaceus (Cactaceae), in two contrasting Brazilian ecosystems Mauricio Larios Ulloa1 , Marcos Vinicius Meiado2 , Sofía Loza Cornejo1, 3 , Katiane da Conceição Santos2 Resumen: Antecedentes y Objetivos: Melocactus violaceus una cactácea endémica que se distribuye en el este de Brasil, está categorizada como especie vul- nerable en la Lista Roja de la IUCN debido a la pérdida de hábitat. Esta investigación se realizó en dos ecosistemas contrastantes brasileños, caatinga (Parque Nacional Sierra de Itabaiana) y restinga (Playa de Pirambu), con el objetivo de determinar los patrones de distribución, densidad, caracteres morfométricos vegetativos (altura y diámetro del tallo) y reproductivos (presencia de cefalio, morfología de flor, fruto y semilla) de esta subespecie y destacar la posible influencia del hábitat sobre sus poblaciones. Métodos: Para cada una de las áreas de estudio se analizaron y compararon patrones de distribución, densidad, porcentaje de mortalidad y carac- teres morfométricos de estructuras vegetativas (altura y diámetro del tallo) y reproductivas (longitud y diámetro de flor, fruto y semilla), mediante análisis estadísticos (ANDEVA, pruebas de comparaciones múltiples de Tukey y coeficientes de correlación de Pearson). Resultados clave: Los resultados demostraron una densidad de 0.52 y 0.44 individuos/m2 en caatinga y restinga, respectivamente. Más de 65% de los individuos se establecen en parches libres de vegetación en ambas zonas. Los valores promedio de caracteres morfométricos están dentro de los establecidos para la subespecie, aunque se observaron diferencias estadísticas significativas (p<0.05) al comparar los dos sitios de estudio. -

This document has been prepared by Mr James Grogan under contract with the CITES Secretariat.1 2. Background information can be found in two key CITES documents: CoP15 Doc. 55, submitted by the Management Authority of Switzerland, describes the issue under consideration in this report, whether certain genera of epiphytic cacti (seven as listed below) should be excluded from Appendix II based on the preponderance of artificially propagated compared to wild- collected specimens in international trade; IUCN Red List conservation status is reviewed, and trade data for gross exports of wild-collected specimens from range nations during 1975–2008 are presented; PC19 Doc. 14.1, prepared by the Chair of the Working Group on the Periodic Review with assistance from the Scientific Authority of Mexico, presents further analysis of trade data during 1998–2008 including the number of specimens of epiphytic cacti in trade that were artificially propagated, number of records and specimens that were wild collected, confiscated or seized, or of unknown origin during this period, and geographic ranges of species in question.
