For the last couple of Julian Duval Arlene Prater years, there has been a unanimous consensus for the Garden to be a Joyce Sapp leader in promoting and implementing sustainable practices. Kitty Sparrow In the area of water conservation, the Garden has a long Anne Spindel history. There are 13 major garden areas identified in the SDBG Anneke Stender Visitor Guide map that, although very different, serve as good Richard Stevens examples for water conserving landscapes. We are one of the few public gardens that make use of recycled water. A more recent example is the eco-friendly design of some of our buildings. With SAN DIEGO Botanic GARDEN the opening of the Hamilton Children’s Garden last year we now PHONE EXTENSIONS have four green (planted) roofs. These are an attractive alternative to the typical hard surface roofs and have many environmental www.SDBGarden.org advantages such as controlling run off. Most of our classes promote 760/ 436–3036 (phone) 760/ 632–0917 (fax) sustainable gardening. We recently taught students the methods of Monday through Friday, 9 AM – 5 PM permaculture and installed a small demonstration garden in the Reception Desk 201 Hamilton Children’s Garden. The Garden’s role, in large part, is to educate. We can do this President/CEO • Julian Duval 202 most effectively by demonstrating and interpreting sustainable Director of Operations • Pat Hammer 203 practices. This year, we are taking it one step further—a big step— Education/Events Coordinator • Diana Goforth 204 raising the bar for our sustainability practices. I did say that this requires the participation of everyone involved and that includes our guests who are responsible for making the 2 event our largest fundraiser of the year. Clearly, they have a right to expect a wonderful Photo: Bill Dean experience that includes great food served at over 30 beautifully decorated stations throughout the Garden along with a wide selection of beverages and entertainment. Something they will not find, however, is unsightly garbage cans. We have always struggled with trying to make the refuse containers fit in with the beautiful decor but a garbage receptacle is always going to be a garbage receptacle. In place of unsightly garbage cans, guests will find volunteers staffing eco-stations where plates, utensils, and leftovers will be sorted to be recycled into a useful soil amendment. We are proud of how our Gala in the Garden is becoming greener this year and I firmly believe our guests will appreciate coming to and supporting a fundraiser that is so earth-friendly. Another connection to that theme is our Gala honoree. We will be honoring Dr. Jodie Holt with the Paul Ecke Jr. Award of Excellence. Dr. Holt is Chair of the Plant Physiology Department at UC Riverside and served as the botanical consultant for the movie Avatar. If you have seen the movie you know that it increased awareness of botany to the general public and emphasized how respect and stewardship are important in protecting the environment. So on September 11th, come and join us in “celebrating Sarah Rankin and Bill Dean, Gala in the environment and stewardship” and know that that we can have a wonderful time and be Garden Green Committee Co-Chairs. good stewards of our planet at the same time. Photo: Julian Duval SDBG Receives Boojum Trees from WAP In the wildfires of October 2007, the Wild Animal Park came close to losing a lot of plants and animals. In looking over their conservation efforts, they decided to transplant and grow some of their valuable plant species off site. As a result of that decision, the San Diego Botanic Garden received four Boojum trees (Fouquiera columnaris), which are now growing in the Hamilton Children’s Garden. The Boojum tree is native to the Sonoran Desert on the west coast of Baja California and one small area on the Sonora mainland near Puerto Libertad. Its bizarre shape resembles an upside down carrot, something you encounter in a Dr. Seuss book. Here is a picture of the enormous effort it took to move the large specimens to SDBG.
