This section of the LOOP passes through attractive countryside with strong links to Charles Darwin who described the countryside around the village of Downe as 'the extreme verge of the world'. The walking is generally easy, but with a few longish, steep slopes, stiles and kissing gates and some small flights of steps. Much of it is through commons, parks and along tracks. There are cafes and pubs at many places along the way and you can picnic at High Elms, where there are also public toilets. The walk starts at Jubilee Country Park and finishes at Hayes station. To get to the start of this walk from Petts Wood station exit on the West Approach side of the station and turn right at the T-junction with Queensway. Follow the street until it curves round to the left, and carry straight on down Crest View Drive. Take Tent Peg Lane on the right and keep to the footpath through the trees to the left of the car park. After 100 metres enter Jubilee Country Park, and join the LOOP. From the car park on Tent Peg Lane enter the park and at the junction of several paths and go through the gate on the left and follow the metalled path for about 150 metres, then branch left.

There is also a guide to the location of the original registers held at Medway Archives and Local Studies Centre and four other repositories holding registers for parishes that were formerly in Kent. This Guide lists parish names in alphabetical order and indicates where parish registers, bishops' transcripts and transcripts are held.     The Owl Prowl Continues! Report of Pilot Survey A tawny owl survey was carried out this autumn in the London Borough of Bromley under the leadership of Bromley Biodiversity Partnership, in particular by Bill Whitaker of the OFC. 59 records were submitted by 33 people from many parts of the borough. Tawny owls were recorded in about 17 areas: High Elms & the Cudham Valley, Darrick Wood area, Marvels & Elmstead Woods, between Elmstead Wood and Chislehurst & Walden Road Recreation Ground, between Chislehurst & Walden Road Recreation Ground & Chislehurst Golf Course, Chislehurst Golf Course itself, Old Hill/Lubbock Road area, Chislehurst, Sundridge Park, Kemnal Road, Chislehurst, the St Pauls Cray Road area, Hawkwood Estate/Petts Wood, Scadbury Park, Hayes, near Bromley South, Kelsey Park, Beckenham, Crofton Woods and south of Biggin Hill. The records clearly show recording effort, with no records for several areas where owls are very likely to be present such as West Wickham and Keston Commons and hardly any records for areas of open countryside to the south and east of the borough where fewer people live. The almost complete lack of records from these areas and the peripheral wards of LBB to the east, south east, south and south west are also likely to be due in part to the fact that we were unable to communicate effectively with residents in these areas before the survey commenced. Within the larger areas where recordings were submitted there are probably several tawny owl territories, for example within High Elms Country Park and along the Cudham Valley. In well populated areas, for example within Chislehurst, there is likely to be some duplication of records, but the large number of tawny owl records for Chislehurst and its surroundings (Chislehurst Common, Chislehurst Golf Course, Petts Wood, Scadbury Park, Elmstead and Marvels Wood, Sundridge Park and Chislehurst & Walden Road Recreation Ground, together with gardens between), may also reflect the importance of good connectivity between areas rich in biodiversity within an urban area.

As Orpington Manor was paramount, and claimed jurisdic- tion, over all manors in St. Mary Cray, Hayes, Downe and Nockholt, so in like manner was Orpington Church the mother church, to which, until recent times, the churches of those four parishes were appendant chapels. As bearing upon the origin of parishes, of church-endowments, and of church-patronage, the fact that the supremacy of Orpington over St. Mary Cray, Hayes, Downe, and Nockholt, was main- tained both for manorial and for ecclesiastical purposes, during so many centuries, is noteworthy. When we remem- ber the importance, and dignity, which thus attached to Orpington Church, we are surprised that it is not of grander dimensions. Its interior is but 100 feet long. Sparseness of population might, in our times, account for its small size; as in 1377, Orpington contained not more than 290 souls; Downe, about 167; Hayes 104; and Nockholt 83.* But, in the middle ages, population did not regulate the dimensions of churches. Greater interest, however, attaches to the nave of Orpington Church, from the very fact that its walls have never been broken into, for the purpose of adding aisles.
