Co-hosted by Tyrone Edwards, Chloe Wilde, Inez Point and Jully Black this star-studded lineup joins international activists and WE co-founders, Craig and Marc Kielburger, to share their passion for change and energize the crowd with unforgettable performances and motivational speeches. The cast of returning WE Day fan favourites and new faces joins 15,000 students and educators from across the province to celebrate the contributions of young people and kick- start another year of change. WE Day is part of WE—an organization that brings people together and gives them the tools to change the world locally and globally, achieving transformative outcomes for themselves and others. People from across Saskatchewan can visit WE.org to take the WE Pledge, a commitment to living WE by making a difference every day. Led by Regional Title Sponsor PotashCorp and National Co-Title Sponsors RBC and TELUS, WE Day Saskatchewan celebrates the remarkable stories of people creating change and provides the youth in attendance inspiration to find their place within WE. WE Day is proud to welcome Assembly of First Nations National Chief Perry Bellegarde as a National WE Day Honorary Co-Chair. Chief Bellegarde, born and raised on the Little Black Bear First Nation, Treaty 4 Territory, Saskatchewan, spoke to the audience at WE Day Vancouver in 2016 and will be onstage inspiring the crowd once again this WE Day Saskatchewan. “We need to celebrate those who are making positive change in the world and that is what WE Day is all about,” said Juno award-winning singer-songwriter and speaker, Jully Black. “I feel so fortunate to be in the company of thousands of remarkable youth. Together, these students have proved their actions—big or small—will create a better tomorrow. I hope to encourage everyone to continue to make their voices heard—if I can do it, so can you!” WE Day Saskatchewan is a true community celebration of young people taking action locally and globally, including Saskatchewan youth like Hani Al Moulia. Although legally blind, Hani is an accomplished photographer and promising student, who has shown strength in the face of adversity and will take the stage to share his story. Alongside his parents and siblings, Hani made the dangerous and uncertain trek from the Syrian city of Homs to Canada, arriving in June 2015. Hani now shares photographs of his family’s journey to their new hometown of Regina, with the hope that families will be inspired by his story and embrace the power of togetherness. Speakers and performers at WE Day Saskatchewan will energize the crowd through powerful educational speeches, inspirational moments and empowering performances. A few must-see highlights include: Award-winning country music artist, Brett Kissel, performs his hit songs “Airwaves” and “Started With a Song” Members of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Dan Clark and Nick Demski, speak about the impacts young people have made across Saskatchewan Miss Universe Canada 2016, Siera Bearchell, shares her story with the WE Day audience, and discusses the importance of body positivity More than a one-day event, WE Day is connected to the yearlong free educational program, WE Schools, which provides schools and community groups with curriculum, educational resources and action campaigns designed to enhance a school’s existing social initiatives or spark new ones. WE Schools encourages students to further their curricular learning and develop life skills for success. Young people are challenged to research and make an impact on at least one local and one global issue. They are supported with curricular resources, service campaigns and mentorship programs to help them to become change-makers. “Every year, more than 200,000 students, from over 10,000 schools around the globe earn their ticket to WE Day through the yearlong WE Schools program, creating positive impacts at their schools and in their communities,” said Craig Kielburger, co-founder of WE. “WE Day Saskatchewan will unite and celebrate thousands of young leaders who are working passionately for the causes they care about most, creating sustainable change on a local and global level.” In the 2015/2016 school year, students and teachers from across Saskatchewan participated in remarkable social change. More than 435 schools and groups in the province improved the world through WE Schools, volunteering more than 261,000 hours and raising almost $735,000 in support of global issues and local causes. Projects included the collection of food items for local food banks, raising environmental awareness and strengthening the community through supporting reconciliation efforts. Students at Westview Community School in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, for example, participated in the WE Scare Hunger campaign by holding a food drive and hosting a Hallowe’en dance to collect more food and raise funds for the Prince Albert Food Bank. Students also supported the WE Opportunity pillar in Haiti by giving a presentation to their school on the economic and historical challenges faced in Haiti. Regional Title Sponsor PotashCorp is responsible for bringing WE Day to Saskatchewan. The company is dedicated to making an impact both locally and globally. PotashCorp’s support of the WE Schools program in the province helps provide youth with the tools they need to become active change-makers within their communities and around the world. Together, PotashCorp and WE formed the Agriculture and Food Security pillar in the WE Villages development model. The pillar focuses on innovative farming techniques and tools, ensures that developing communities have access to healthy, self-sustaining food sources. The Agriculture and Food Security pillar directly impacts a community’s health, access to education and life outcomes. PotashCorp’s expertise and financial support helped introduce school gardens, family farms, nutrition programs, fertilizer, agriculture training, improved seeds and irrigation projects to WE communities. In India and China, 100% of farmers in the Agriculture and Food Security program increased their food security after only three years. In Kenya, 91% of farmers who participated in the three-year program said the health of their families had improved because they had access to more food. You can’t buy a ticket to WE Day—students from across Canada earn their way with the actions they take on one local and one global cause of their choice. WE Day Saskatchewan is free of charge to the thousands of students and educators in attendance, thanks to Regional Title Sponsor PotashCorp and National Co-Title Sponsors RBC and TELUS. RBC hopes to inspire every young Canadian to #Make150Count by celebrating the contributions and community spirit of youth in recognition of Canada’s 150th anniversary; TELUS supports the We give where we live® initiative, believing in the power of technology and communications to improve the lives of Canadians. About WE Day WE Day is part of WE—an organization that brings people together and gives them the tools to change the world. A unique family of organizations, WE is made up of WE Charity, empowering change with resources that create sustainable impact, and ME to WE, a social enterprise that creates socially conscious products and experiences that allow people to do good through their everyday choices. The celebration of that change happens at WE Day—inspiring stadium-sized life-changing events that take place around the world. You can’t buy a ticket to WE Day—young people earn their entry by taking action on one local and one global cause. WE Day unites world-renowned speakers, presenters and award- winning performers with thousands of young people and families to celebrate and inspire another year of incredible change. This year alone over 200,000 young people will come together in 16 stadium gatherings across the U.S., Canada, and U.K. to take part in this unprecedented educational initiative. A global movement of 2.4 million young people strong, youth involved with WE have raised $79 million for more than 6,500 local and global organizations, volunteered 27.6 million hours for local and global causes and collected over 9.8 million pounds of food through service learning programs and campaigns. WE was founded more than 20 years ago by humanitarians, activists and social entrepreneurs, brothers Craig and Marc Kielburger. Learn more at WE.org. • Midyear Report Canada 2020
NIELSEN MUSIC / MRC DATA MIDYEAR REPORT CANADA 2020 1 Introduction HAT A DIFFERENCE A FEW MONTHS MAKE. IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE THAT IT WASN’T even six months ago that Shakira and Jennifer Lopez performed for a tightly packed crowd of more than 60,000 people in Miami at the Super Bowl, while Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas picked up five Grammys at what turned out to be 2020’s last major music business gathering since COVID-19 halted live events. WBy Friday, March 13, the NBA and NHL had suspended play, the NCAA had canceled its spring tournaments, and theaters and live music venues had closed. As “safer at home” orders spread throughout the country, our homes became our offices, our schools, our daycares and our social hubs. Quickly and dramatically, life had changed. Our routines were disrupted, and we struggled to find balance. Still, the music industry was experiencing a strong start to the year. Audio streaming was growing through early March, up 20.9% over the same period in 2019. Total music consumption was up 10.8% in the first 10 weeks of the year. As working from home became a reality for many, some of the key music listening hours, such as during commutes, were disrupted. But one thing that has remained consistent as the pandemic has unfolded is entertainment’s place in helping consumers escape, relax and feel energized. In fact, in our recent consumer research studies, 73% of people said they would go crazy without entertainment during this time. Then, just as many communities began to slowly reopen, the country was shaken by the senseless May 25 killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police.
